The reason is Virtual Reality, specifically the Oculus Rift. The Oculus rift currently uses phone screens for the dual displays. Imagine 2 curved 4K displays in an Oculus Rift. The 4k screen is SO CLOSE to your eyes the pixels do matter and the curved displays can extend naturally into your peripheral vision. Am I right? Love the show! - Chris

41 | - Gogo has unveiled new service that allows phone calls & text message. Showed off Text & Talk technology to CNET aboard a private jet, departing from and returning to New Jersey's Newark International Airport. - utilizing the company's air-to-ground connectivity, calls and texts back on Earth are now routed through the aircraft's wireless network rather than in-flight cell towers, or "picocells." Users aboard commercial flights with Gogo in-flight Wi-Fi access can download a companion app (ios or android), which the company describes as an "extension" of the regular cellular network. This allows smartphone users to roam on the in-flight network as if they were connected to a land-based cell network. - The company has more than 6,000 Gogo-equipped aircraft, from American Airlines, Delta, United, and Virgin America. | q: oh god plane phone calls are actually gonna happen aren't they

44 | - Hollywood Reporter has an exclusive about Beyond Broadband Technology - BBT has been granted a patent they say would provide "a totally secure communications path." It would use a "downloadable conditional access system" Here's how it works: - A distributor or company sends the content or data to a consumer or company by wired line, the Internet or over the air. - An inexpensive pre-programmed computer chip inside the device receives the download and provides the only authorization needed. The user wouldn't even have to input a password - This system would not use a public/private key nor a trusted authority | - BBT doesn't manufacture the chips, but will provide an open system available to license - BBT's proposed pricing for a cable box system would be about $5 per unit. Cable cards cost about $35 Q: This appears to be a hardware-based DRM-scheme. Do you think this could catch on?

48 | - Facebook testing displaying star ratings (like 1 out of 5), on Pages on the DESKTOP version, according to a TC source. Screenshots and live testing show that FB has turned on the star rating display for at least a small subsection of users - FB has been collecting star ratings from users on the desktop and via local search already, and also seeking star ratings on content and apps via Timelinea. What is new is making this information explicitly displayed on the social network itself, in a prominent place on a business or place Page. - as TC article points out - Comments provide some sense of sentiment around a Page, but the five-star system threads the needle between ease-of-use, information and digestibility, compared to both the Like and text comments. And as Facebook moves to become a platform geared towards providing public information, as well as real-time interactivity around media like TV, offering more granularity around how its users feel about people, places and things makes a lot of sense. | q: make sense?

73 | This is Marlon "theGufromTrinidad", and for Iyaz to call Power Man/Luke Cage B listers is a travesty. As you may know Joss Whedon has taken the inspiration for the Marvel Movies from the Ultimate Marvel Storyline, and while the Avengers are seen as the primer heroes, the characters to be featured in the upcoming series also play a key part of the background and in one storyline the Defenders take over the role of premier crime fighters when the avengers break up. What is also key is that all the characters operate in Hell's kitchen, New York so there should be crossovers between the shows and this can be seen as the ground game for our fearless leader Joss Whedon's Phase 3 of his grand plan for the Marvel Universe. We the comic book nerds of the internet are very excited. :) Love the show

12 | tm | Reuters reports sources say Microsoft has narrowed its list of CEO candidates to about five people. ON the list to replace Steve Ballmer are Ford’s Alan “I’m not leaving Ford but I’m not going to explicitly rule out Microsoft” Mulally and the itinerant former Nokia CEO and even more formerly Microsoft VP Stephen Elop. Internal candidate include former Skype CEO Tony Bates and head of cloud and enterprise Satya Nadella. The U.S. government requested data between 1000 and 2000 times on 2000 to 3000 accounts. Apple disclosed data for 0 to 1000 of those accounts. These numbers may seem vague and that's why Apple will file an Amicus brief at the Ninth Circuit court to support a case for "greater transparency with respect to National Security Letters." The rest of the world asked Apple for information about 719 times. | http://techcrunch.com/2013/11/05/apple-publishes-first-report-of-information-requests-files-with-u-s-government-for-more-transparency/

30 | - Reuters reports that MS has whittled down its CEO list from 40 to about a handful - Top names still include Ford CEO Alan Mulally, former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop. Internally, MS is looking at Skype CEO Tony Bates (now head of MS business development), & Satya Nadella, head of MS cloud and enterprise - Reuters couldn't scrounge up the other names - MS didn't comment and a Ford rep said "Alan remains fully focused on continuing to make progress on our One Ford plan. We do not engage in speculation." Q: The news is that the list has shortened - any surprises as to candidates? | Background on would-be MS heads: - Mulally: in charge of Ford, didn't need a federal bailout - Elop: ran MS business division before jumping to Nokia - Bates: was CEO of Skype, which MS bought - Nadell: executive vice president of Microsoft’s Cloud and Enterprise group, responsible for building and running the company’s computing platforms, developer tools and cloud services. - Larry Dignan wrote a piece on why these leaked names are poor choices - Mulalley: potential long leraning curve - Elop: he didn't save Nokia, good luck w/MS - Bates: interesting, but could Bates manage something as large as MS (thinks he's the best choice) - Satya Nadella: interesting, but same issue as Bates - could he handle the huge MS

39 | - speaking onstage at the GigaOM Roadmap conf in SF: Jonah Jones, a user experience designer at Google, & Bernhard Seefeld, a product manager for Google Maps. - said past decade has been spent on digitizing all of the existing paper maps. now map designers can add more detail that customizes the experience based on location and other signals about a user. - “When we combine the location with the other data we have, we can actually build a new map for every purpose or every location — a very specific map that no one has ever seen and won’t be there again because it was just created for this one purpose.” - when users zoom out on a map, only some locations & businesses highlighted. Google used to choose which business or feature was more important. But by considering the locations a user has either checked into or searched for, Google could change or re-rank the labels so that users would see the ones that are most important to them. - Google may not even need to show you a map — it may know that you are at the airport, and so it can show you flight times without even requiring you to search. 47 | - Speaking to IGN, Valve’s Greg Coomer said, “you won’t see an exclusive killer app for SteamOS from us. We’re not going to be doing that kind of thing.” - The same will apply to third-party titles - Valve's Anna Sweet told IGN that Valve encourages third-party partners to put their games in as many places as possible, including other platforms - She said it would go against Valve's "whole philosophy, to launch something that’s exclusive to SteamOS or Steam machines.” - Valve doesn't want to create artificial barriers according to Coomer - He did note that small, independent studios who only have the resources to focus on one platform may inevitably make games that only run on SteamOS, “but that’s a very different thing.” Q: Sounds very altruistic, but is this a bad business idea?

75 | Hey Gang, I was listening to the show the other day and Netflix was mentioned. Your guest, David Hewlett, mentioned that we have moved beyond waiting each week for a new episode of our favourite TV show. That got me thinking that a daily soap opera might be perfect for Netflix. They could easily publish a back catalogue of a cancelled soap, Guiding Light or As The World Turns, then start it up again publishing daily. Cost could be an issue but if the format was changed to a 30 minute show with fewer plot lines in the "webisode" style it could work. In my mind this could draw a new audience to Netflix, and increase daily viewer ship since subscribers would want to tune in daily to get their fix they may either login early and watch another show or stay logged in to watch additional shows. Thoughts? Regards, Scott from Canada without the "good Netflix"

77 | Hi TNT Your discussion of Google Helpouts mentioned the fact that if you need to be available 5 minutes after being contacted. If that's the case, then this service isn't really intended for single user advice giver, but instead for large corporations that have many possible experts to answer your question. I think this is probably going to end up being used as a replacement to all the websites that have a "click here to contact a live representative" -- Instead of maintaining the system yourself, your business can pay Google a fee, and have all the infrastructure for queue management and video management and small finance issues taken care of for you. All you need to provide is the call center workers with knowledge of your product. The Beta product is the "anyone can help" - the money maker would be call centers.... the teens getting makeup advice from Sephora are beta-testing the real product, and giving Google real world examples of how well it works. Italy’s l’Espresso reports the UK’s GCHQ and US NSA, tap the Net from Britain’s Ayios Nikolaos intelligence station on Cyrpus. Cyprus is a hub of several fiber-optic undersea cables. Leak 2, from the UK’s Independent reports, probably not that surprisingly, that the GCHQ and NSA spy on the Net from diplomatic buildings, most interesting to Angela Merkel, in Berlin. And leak 3 is a follow-up. NSA Director Keith B. Alexander denied the NSA had access to Google or Yahoo servers, neatly skirting the question of taps on fiber. Since that didn’t work, now HTC says it will cut operating expenses by around 25% and focus on selling cheaper handsets. HTC confirmed a Q3 net loss of NT$3 billion, its first ever quarterly loss. How can they make more money while selling cheaper phones? Volume! CFO Chialin Chang told Reuters, ““We’re looking at broader products in this quarter… we aim for higher volume into 2014 that will give better profitability.” | http://techcrunch.com/2013/11/05/htc-q4-expectations/
23 | ia | And rounding out earnings-palooza - AOL reported its third quarter results. The good news: revenue was up thanks to better advertising sales. That made earnings per share for AOL only two cents. 16 | sl | You know what improves the capacity and efficiency of hard drives? Helium! Western Digital has announced that its HGST subsidiary has begun shipping the new 6-terabyte Ultrastar He6 hard drive, a model that seals the spinning disk platters inside a hermetic chamber filled with helium instead of air. Helium has just one-seventh the density of air, so it reduces the turbulence caused by spinning disks and the heads that constantly move above them to read and write data. That translates to lower power consumption and less waste heat in the data centers that use these drives. How much less? 45 | - latest report from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech showing data for the three months ending in September 2013, Windows Phone has overtaken iOS in Italy and now makes up one in 10 smartphone sales across five major European markets – the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain. - Windows Phone’s progress is driven “almost entirely” by Nokia sales — as it continues to progress rapidly in Europe. For the last three months ending in August, Windows Phone-based devices accounted for 9.2 percent of smartphone sales in the same five markets. - Nokia has also been showing signs of growth in emerging markets, in particular Latin America. Given that Nokia has dominated in Latin America for many years, and the majority of consumers in the region still own a Nokia featurephone, Kantar says that “upgrading to an entry level Lumia is a logical next step.” | In the UK, Windows Phone-based devices make up 11.4 percent of the market, though Android remains top dog with 58.4 percent while Apple’s iOS has dipped by 1.0 percentage point to 27 percent. However, Kantar notes though that Apple’s share is expected to bounce back “strongly” over the Christmas season due to its new iPhones. - different story in china: Android devices account for a staggering 81.1 percent of the Chinese market, up 14.6 percentage points from last year — and domestic smartphone makers make up 44 percent of sales in the three months to September 2013, compared with 30 percent a year earlier q: beginning of win phone surge, thx to nokia?

77 | Hi TNT crew, On Tuesday's episode 871, Tom was wondering why anyone used travel agents anymore. We use the aggregators to find the lowest price, then print it out and take it in to our travel agency. They have always matched the price, and what is more valuable, is one phone number to call. If you have ever tried to solve a problem on your own with a hotel, airline, or resort, it can sometimes take hours if you get resolution at all. When a travel agency, that could potentially be representing thousands of recommendations makes the call, things get sorted out in minutes. At least, that has been our experience. Keep up the great work! Thanks, Grant

Because no pre-orders were allowed, several Apple stores had customers lining up to buy the new tablet. 13 | sl | Remember last year when the "Rockstar" consortium backed by Apple, Microsoft, BlackBerry, Sony and Ericsson closed its purchase of thousands of former Nortel patents for $4.5 billion? The team agreed to license the tech on "fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory terms." According to Reuters, Rockstar -- along with another company, Netstar -- has now filed a lawsuit against Google over seven of the patents, reportedly covering the ability to match internet search terms to advertising. Other companies targeted include Android-device-makers Samsung, LG, ASUS, HTC, Pantech, ZTE and Huawei. | http://www.engadget.com/2013/10/31/rockstar-consortium-nortel-patent-google-lawsuit/?ncid=rss_truncated
14 | ia | I feel like the boy who cried wolf, but this time it's true. The Nexus 5 was listed on the Google Play store and it was on purpose! You could actually buy a 16GB model for $349 or a 32GB model for $399. For specs, all those leaks were pretty much right. The Nexus 5 comes in black and white, supports LTE, has a 1080p 4.95-inch screen and is powered by a 2.26GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800. Original shipping times were 3-5 days. As of this morning, the 16GB model is sold out for the time being and the 32GB version ships in 2-3 weeks. | http://techcrunch.com/2013/10/31/nexus-5-announced-specs/

16 | tm | Google launched its Kit Kat version of Android 4.4 Thursday with Senior Vice President of Android, Chrome and AppsSundar Pichai promising “you have one version of the operating system which will run across all versions of Android smartphones.” How’s that shake out? It ships on the Nexus 5, and Kit Kat will come soon to the Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus will not receive the Kit Kat update. Engadget says its sources say this is because of the TI Chipset, which TI no longer supports. HTC told Engadget the Google Play edition of the HTC One will get Kit Kat in 15 days, other unlocked versions in 30 days and all HTC Ones in 90 days. Motorola published a list of its phones that will get Kit Kat including Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx, Droid Mini and the Moto X but gave no timeframe. | http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/10/31/us-google-android-idUSBRE99U19E20131031?feedType=RSS&feedName=technologyNews

Local CBS station KPIX 5 reports multiple sources confirm most of the barge's space will be taken up by luxury showrooms for the company's upcoming Google Glass headset, while the top floor of the barge will be a "party deck." The project is under the oversight of Google co-founder and Google X leader Sergey Brin, and the plan is to "upstage" Apple's retail stores with the "dazzling" and unusual showrooms. | http://www.theverge.com/2013/11/1/5054062/google-glass-barge-san-fransisco-party-boat-rumor
21 | ia | Comcast donates to Seattle mayoral candidate. Sounds like a boring story, right? Wrong! Current Seattle mayor Mick McGinn is behind a public/private initiative that would bring the city inexpensive internet with speeds up to 1Gbps for $80/month. McGinn was asked on a Reddit Ask-Me-Anything what would happen to that fiber network should he lose to challenger Ed Murray. McGinn said "I don't know, but I do know Comcast gave Murray a big pile of money." That statement insinuates that maybe a Comcast-backed Seattle mayor would favor Comcast and not a low cost alternative. A spokesperson for candidate Murray says that the city would honor the pilot program, but was noncommittal about the future of fiber in Seattle. 23 | sl | Google, Facebook,Twitter and other tech companies are all pushing back against government requests for user data — from things like publishing the numbers of government requests they receive, to conversations with officials behind closed doors. And companies are building technical fortresses intended to make their private information inaccessible to the government and spies. But their business models rely on collecting that same data, largely to sell personalized ads. As long as these companies remain ad companies, their data will continue to be a goldmine for law enforcement and spies. The lower three levels will serve as the showrooms with "chrome features and floor lighting." - The top level is a party deck to feature bars and areas for VIPs to hangout - The report also says the barge project was created at Google X and is being personally directed by Sergey Brin - Why isn't it open yet? 58 | - ArsTechnica has a story about badBIOS, a piece of malware that "jumps airgaps." - The story explains that a security consultant Dragos Ruiu [Roo-you] noticed that some of his computers were transmitting data specific to the IPv6 networking protocol, even though those machines had IPv6 completely disabled - To get to the bottom of this, the researcher started removing components of the machine to see if data was still being transmitted. - After removing ethernet cables, wi-fi cards, bluetooth cards, and power cables the machines still transmitted small amounts of network data. - Within hours or weeks of wiping an infected computer clean, the odd behavior would return. - The most visible sign of contamination is a machine's inability to boot off a CD - The malware also appeared to have "self-healing capabilities." In a case of a machine that had the BIOS reflashed, a new disk drive with zero data on it. What happened? The registry editor was disabled. | So what's happening? - Ruiu's theory is that infected machines can contaminate USB devices and vice versa - As for the network transmissions, the malware appears to be taking advantage of the high frequencies played from the computer's speakers and receiving data using the mic. When Ruiu took out the speakers and mic of infected machines, the transmissions stopped. Q: What do you think of badBIOS? Should we all cower in fear now?

83 | Hey Tom, Sarah, Iyaz, Jason and Darren! A quick thought about the Pursuit story... I really like the idea, but as we know, battery-life and data caps are two important issues on mobile (for most people), and if we start seeding data all day long, it can cause a problem there.. (I'm not really talking about the personal usages, like in the medical example, but more about the broad usages, like the replacement for the AppStore servers example). They could obviously do what Apple is doing with iCould backups, so it will seed only when you're charging the phone and on wi-fi, but that will decrease the amount of seeders dramatically.. Have a great weekend! Greetings from Israel - Soundwave in chat -

85 | Hi TNT crew, In episode #872, while talking about the new iPad Air, you wondered why the iPad 2 is still on the market. There's a simple reason for that: I know a number of companies who use first and second generation iPads with custom-built peripherals, which all use the 30-pin connector. These peripherals can be pretty expensive--more costly than an iPad--so companies choose to keep the peripherals around, and replace broken iPads with an iPad 2, in stead of replacing or even re-developing the hardware. Take care, Angelo

12 | tm | The Washington Post reported another Edward Snowden leak yesterday, describing project MUSCULAR, a joint operation of the US's NSA and UK's GCHQ. The project allegedly taps fiber optic cable's between data centers for Google and Yahoo. If ture, this would allow the spies to see almost all data used by the two services, as they sync data centers across four continents. It also has the advantage of being outside the US, therefore not subject to laws prohibiting domestic surveillance. Meanwhile if you were wondering what Snwoden's doing for Vodka money in Russia these days, his lawyer announced he starts work in November for a major Russian website that remains unnamed. Somebody'll leak it though I'm sure. | http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/nsa-infiltrates-links-to-yahoo-google-data-centers-worldwide-snowden-documents-say/2013/10/30/e51d661e-4166-11e3-8b74-d89d714ca4dd_story.html

15 | tm | AT&T's efforts to gain more marketshare Europe by acquiring local telecoms could be affected by recent leaks of NSA surveillance data, European officials tell The Wall Street Journal. AT&T is implicated along with Sprint and Verizon in the government's data collection: the FISA Amendments Act allows the NSA to request all phone metadata records from the companies. "We'd need to have a concrete discussion to make sure that European data wouldn't be leaving Europe," one official tells the Journal. | http://www.theverge.com/2013/10/31/5050164/nsa-surveillance-revelations-hobble-at-ts-attempts-at-a-european

50 | - Microsoft is unveiling "Hero Ads!" - Bing is piloting a new type of ad in Bing Smart Search in Windows 8.1. - When you conduct a brand search in Windows 8.1, you'll be greeted with large photos and custom links created by an advertiser instead of a list of search results - So for example, search for Land Rover and you'll see a huge picture of a Land Rover provided by the company with options to request a quote or schedule a test drive - Bing is testing the ads with a bunch of companies like Land Rover, Jaguar, Home Depot, and Radio Shack. - During the pilot, the ads will be shown to a subset of people searching for the specific names of the companies or brands on Windows 8.1. - Forty-four percent of Windows 8.1 searchers in the U.S. who type the specific search terms will see the new ads. - Searchers will still be able to scroll to the right for additional search results. - No word if this is headed to Bing on the web Q: Hero ads: good idea or bad idea? More importantly: do you think it would help MS get more of the search market? | Microsoft has about 18 percent of the U.S. search market on its own, according to comScore data, and just under 30 percent when counting the search results that the company serves for Yahoo under their partnership. Google search market share in the U.S. is about 67 percent.

53 | - A new patent application published by the USPTO this week shows Apple filed originally in 2012 for solar power - power management array for accepting both power adapter and solar power direct from gathering devices or traditional mains-based chargers. So you could plug in your MagSafe or iPad/iPod adapter, or alternatively hook a MacBook or other piece of hardware directly to a solar panel with a simple cord. There’s also a means for accepting both inputs at the same time, according to the patent, for a power balance that would likely charge your device quicker but with more economical use of juice from the grid. | - key to this patent is that the system described is both composed of readily available power management techniques achievable with existing hardware, and; able to be built using componentry that takes up very little space, making it theoretically possible to integrate it into existing device designs without much modification. q: why don't we have this already???

79 | One aspect of Google possibly bringing out a smart watch based on Google Now that I didn’t hear discussed and I think is a reason why Google may have a leg up over the competition is voice recognition. Remember that Google Now is voice activated (like Siri) and you can do lots of things through voice commands. Imagine how much nicer that will be if you don’t even have to pull your phone out. You could just tap your smart watch and speak into it to send a text or email, add a note to self, ask it what song is playing or what glossaphobia is. Google will be able to more tightly integrate this voice recognition on your watch connected to Google Now on your phone than the competitors. I’m sure they are already working on more voice commands for Google Glass. The watch would then just be a variation on Google Glass, that you wear on your wrist instead of your face. Just something I realized this morning while pulling my phone out of my pocke to add a note to self using voice recognition. -- Dale in Indy

43 | - Twitter changed some things which is making people angry - The new version of Twitter on the web and its iOS & Android apps now display photo and video previews expanded in a tweet - Previously, you'd have to click a link to expand certain content w/in a tweet - Twitter explained on a blogpost that "timelines on Twitter will be more visual and more engaging…" - At the bottom of the tweet, there are now dedicated options for reply, retweet or favorite (before, you'd have to click the tweet, then those options would appear) - Twitter allows users of its iOS and Android apps to turn off image previews. The web version doesn't offer this - Jack Marshall of Digiday.com says this effectively is Twitter's answer to banner ads since brands could put images in their feeds that you can't avoid Q: Does the change bother you? Imagine ARM’s most powerful and technologically advanced 64-bits processor built on Intel’s leading-edge fabs. A duo that will be hard to beat,” explains Nathan Brookwood, principal analyst at Insight 64. | Intel ready to open up its leading-edge factories to whomever is willing to pay a premium, chip prices could actually come down, with the other foundries (TSMC, UMC, GlobalFoundries, Samsung, IBM or SMIC) feeling the pressure to compete. 83 | On yesterday's show you pretty much gave the impression that people might not really want modular phones and to a certain degree you might be right. But i've come across a few new laptops, and i really don't mean the gaming ones that have removable memory, graphics module or in a fair number of cases even CPU. So modularity hasn't gone the way of the dodo just yet, no matter what Intel wants you to believe. What lies there between phones or tablets? Aren't tablets just phones with no gsm voice capabilities? I mean except 3 of their components (screen, battery and case) they are basically the same. They have a tiny logic board and the big case is there just to fit the battery and the screen. Couldn't you fit in there a 802.something module that is not really wi-fi for using with special wireless networks inside warehouses. Or how about putting in a [insert payment provider startup module here]. Or a tracking module of some sort to make sure the complementary hotel room tablet you provide your customers doesn't accidentally grow feet when they check out. Or an upgreadable model of a very low powered wireless video transmission thing that is paired with its counterpart on a tv. Or a gazillion other useless thing that will never see the light of day if tablet modularity doesn't really become a thing different from Asus' russian doll padphone/phonepad approach. - Laurentiu

There is one called http://www.bodymedia.com/ that seems to do a lot of what the Airo does. Seems like the technology exists to do this, so would be interesting to see how Airo can make it better. Love the show Trent | Thanks again TNT Crew, I happen to know someone who is working on a project in a hospital building a blood monitor based on optical measurement. It works based on a clip for your thumb, and replaces standard blood tests. I expect that the wrist band is using a similar technology, though probably with less accuracy. -Will from Northern WI

82 | From @photojazz on Twitter: just FYI on Monday #TNT show. I wear a "watch" that keeps measure of my blood glucose. So that bit's doable. It doesn't use light waves. It uses charged particles. Not as accurate as a finger stick, but good enough for day-to-day and less painful.

But being a devil's advocate here...do you think that maybe Martin & the rest of the tech world might be trying to validate how they live their life. I remember Sarah saying something like being on the internet is more exciting that anything else i can do or something like that. I guess i say all this because i've been reading & just finished a new book "The Circle" by Dave Eggers. It's a dystopic look at the tech world in a different prism. & while i thought the ending was vapid & perfunctory...i would encourage y'all & your audience to take a gander at it. i think its theme is particularly apropos these days. love the show, amar
