Unity and Game Design.Voluntary Field Research walking tour through the Superfund Zone of the Gowanus. We'll look at hidden waterstreams and see industrial infrastructure in the Gowanus, Brooklyn. Saturday 3-4:30 PM. The trip is voluntary depending on accessibility to transportation and comfort level. We’ll be outdoors and wearing masks following social distancing guidelines. You’ll be able to borrow a canoe after the walk if you like. Homework AssigmentHW Individual Assignment #1 (Due 9/3): Collect 10 signals and add them to the shared Signals database https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1mDOxTeJEZ49NPhpZzMGn3HxZdYi_qjw4z2ZKxl_iErM/edit?usp=sharingHW Individual Assignment #2: (Due 9/15) Create a virtual tour following the CLUI Meadowlands tour instructions http://www.clui.org/newsletter/winter-2013/new-jersey-meadowlands Produce a 2-3 Min video describing observations on that tour from a non-human perspective for understanding from reading these landscapes. This can be a be from a robot point of view or another species or at a completely different scale, such as focussing on macroscopic textures. Pull up historical research, information on brownfields, ecosystems, digital infrastructures, datacenters, pipelines as well as other layers and integrate them into your tour. HW Individual Assignment #3: (Due Oct. 1) Model a measuring instrument, machine, species that exists in that zone. See this as a Sci-Fi exercise, but think about alternative world views and values that we might want to see in the world that would contrast the typical sci-fi tropes.

Bring these sketches to life in a hyperreality / augmented scene. So Adobe Aero is one way to quickly prototype an augmented sketch https://helpx.adobe.com/aero/get-started.html but there’s other approaches if you want to do it After Effects, Flash or the like. In total you should have 3 scenes with a short 100 word description of the rules of the zone and how it’s related to petro-modernity. Share those clips on Slack before class.
Work with your team to pick a scenario, location and build it out with the scenario development guidelines. (due 10/8)Create an audio tour that introduces one scenario and setting. (due 10/13)Create a compelling sequential narrative (due 10/20)Prepare an in class presentation of your process, documentation, and narrative. Reading (due Oct. 1): Elizabeth Henaff is joining our for a lecture with some fascinating research on computational biology and designing for invisible inhabitants. Here’s a good article she’s published and this is good to read in advance. Be ready to ask her a question:

Listening (due 10/6): Multispecies Worldbuilding - Heather Davis, writer and feminist theorist, talks about plastic and the production of “toxic progeny,” humans and nonhumans born of the petrochemical industry in the United States. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/multispecies-worldbuilding/id1491181624?i=1000488788226
