What is necessary? What is not?
When we design products, we aim to choose the best position for user interface components, placing the most important ones in the most accessible places on the screen.

Equally important is the design of communication. How many are notifications are necessary? How and when should they be displayed? To answer this, we can be inspired by the principles of calm technology.1

12Design Justice Network Principles — Design Justicemanifesto, principlesDesign mediates so much of our realities and has tremendous on our lives, yet very few of us participate in design processes. In particular, the people who are most adversely affected by design decisions — about visual culture, new technologies, the planning of our communities, or the structure of our political and economic systems — tend to have the least influence on those decisions and how they are made.

Design justice rethinks design processes, centers people who are normally marginalized by design, and uses collaborative, creative practices to address the deepest challenges our communities face.

Design is a craft with an amazing amount of power. The power to choose. The power to influence. As designers, we need to see ourselves as gatekeepers of what we are bringing into the world, and what we choose not to bring into the world. Design is a craft with responsibility. The responsibility to help create a better world for all.

26How Privilege Defines Performance, Tatiana Mac @ #PerfMatters Conference 2019 - YouTubevideoIn theory, performance, accessibility, and inclusive design all have similar goals: Provide the best, most consistent experience to all people using the minimal amount of resources.

In practice, this often falls apart.

Product creators define what it means to be performant from where they stand, which is typically from places of privilege with unseen biases, struggling to find true empathy with their users.

Through this talk, we'll examine how to build conscientiously, looking within to resist systematic problems in order to create more truly performant, accessible, and inclusive systems for our users.

They need to take into account past and present forces that are reshaping human society today as well as the first, second, and third-order consequences of any solutions society might propose.

“Any future-ready solution needs to start with systematic futures thinking,” says toolkit author Tessa Finlev. “Only when we’ve explored a range of future possibilities and worked across sectors and their stakeholders to anticipate the unexpected and interlocking consequences of these possible futures are we ready to start designing for equity.”

The CRDC collects a variety of information including student enrollment and educational programs and services, most of which is disaggregated by race/ethnicity, sex, limited English proficiency, and disability. The CRDC is a longstanding and important aspect of the ED Office for Civil Rights (OCR) overall strategy for administering and enforcing the civil rights statutes for which it is responsible. Information collected by the CRDC is also used by other ED offices as well as policymakers and researchers outside of ED.

36Moving Towards an Ethics Framework and Taxonomy for UX Designslide, ethics, uxEthics in user experience design has become a prevalent topic in recent years. But from a pragmatic perspective, what are the ethical issues and considerations we must take into account as designers? And, how do we approach design while also considering the long-reaching effects of our decisions?

This presentation will explore ethics in UX design placing emphasis on the importance and of ethics in design. Ethical issues are not always evident in the design process only becoming all-to-evident upon release of a product or feature. Having an understanding of the types of ethical issues resulting from UX design decisions gives us a foundation for understanding and moving towards a taxonomy and framework to aid designers in evaluating concepts at the point of design.

40Playing the Legal Cardresearch, cards, dataThe regulatory climate is in a process of change. Design, having been implicated for some time, is now explicitly linked to law. This paper recognises the heightened role of designers in the regulation of ambient interactive technologies. Taking account of incumbent legal requirements is difficult. Legal rules are convoluted, uncertain, and not geared towards operationalisable heuristics or development guidelines for system designers. Privacy and data protection are a particular moral, social and legal concern for technologies. This paper seeks to understand how to make emerging European data protection regulation more accessible to our community. Our approach develops and tests a series of data protection ideation cards with teams of designers. We find that, whilst wishing to protect users, regulation is viewed as a compliance issue. Subsequently we argue for the use of instruments, such as our cards, as a means to engage designers in leading a human-centered approach to regulatio

Graphic Design’s history usually starts here, BUT… how has this history been told? Who wrote this history? How can we begin the process of expanding this narrative? Who should we read, engage and talk with?

64The Digital Divideaccessible, apps, bias, blog, principles, project, race, wikiInteraction between human and computers has greatly increased as we embark on the twenty-first century. The ability to access computers and the internet has become increasingly important to completely immerse oneself in the economic, political, and social aspects of not just America, but of the world. However, not everyone has access to this technology. The idea of the "digital divide" refers to the growing gap between the underprivileged members of society, especially the poor, rural, elderly, and handicapped portion of the population who do not have access to computers or the internet; and the wealthy, middle-class, and young Americans living in urban and suburban areas who have access.

91BlackSpace Urbanist Collectiveorganization, organizations, BlackSpace honors the lives of countless victims of this violence, we celebrate Black existence in its current form, we mourn lost Black futures. Our private homes are not safe. Our public spaces are not safe. The “justice” system must change and it does not stop there. No landscape is neutral. Urbanists design and plan the built environments where these tragedies occur. The disciplines impacting our built environments are steeped in racism and anti-Blackness. BlackSpace challenges architects, planners, urban designers, artists, and all curators of built spaces to unlearn traditional values and rethink Manifesto-based practice. We create spaces for Black urbanists to use talent, culture and rituals to design Black futures. We continue to demand a present and future where Black people, spaces, and culture matter and thrive. #blacklivesmatter #blackspace

92The BIPOC Projectorganization, The BIPOC Project aims to build authentic and lasting solidarity among Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC), in order to undo Native invisibility, anti-Blackness, dismantle white supremacy and advance racial justice.

We use the term BIPOC to highlight the unique relationship to whiteness that Indigenous and Black (African Americans) people have, which shapes the experiences of and relationship to white supremacy for all people of color within a U.S. context. We unapologetically focus on and center relationships among BIPOC folks.
