1 | Hey all! Here is a brief explanation of my methods for making this guide. I hope it is helpful in understanding slang, regional differences, or technical jargon that appears in the 2022 NPDL TOC judge paradigms. My personal background is stock issues policy by original training, lay NorCal parli in high school, NPDA debate in college with a whole one tournament of APDA, and now coaching (but mostly administratively) for a medium-sized overall but parli-concentrated NorCal public school program (MVLA). This almost certainly influences some of what follows. I tried to put my best novice hat on for this because I know there are competitors registered for this event that are primarily coming from different formats, as well as parli debaters with large regional divisions in vocabulary and different levels of access to coaching. It's possibile this resulted in identifying too many potential terms, but I erred toward over-explanation rather than providing insufficient information. |
2 | COMPLEX USE CASES * In cases where I found multiple interpretations of one word or phrase, I attempt to list the more common usage first. * In cases where there are many words used to indicate the same concept, I default to putting the definition under most descriptive term, and then to more common usages and/or plain language terms, or usages that contribute to other terms. Other synonyms are marked as "Abbreviation/Variant." |
3 | MISC * If judges included sections specifically labeled for formats OTHER than parliamentary debate, I did not parse those sections. * I tried to do some due diligence in cases where jargon was being used that I wasn't familiar with, consulting with personal connections. Thanks to Sierra Maciorowski for allowing use of her paradigm dictionary and Zach, Riley, lila, Trevor, and Henry for their invaluable help with specific definitions and proofreading. as well as all the MVLA students who contributed to our internal jargon guide, from which I liberally lifted. * I try to be clear about the dates I last looked through a paradigm, in case of changes. Those are marked in the judge list. * If there is a word or phrase you are still unclear on that I missed, please feel free to email me julieherman@mvlasdb.org. All remaining typos and errors are mine; please reach out with corrections! |
