Susanne Everill, Charles Wright AcademyIf you are a graphic novel fan, check this one out! It is a retelling of Beowulf but about children fighting against a grumpy old man. The language is suitably epic, with lots of alliteration - I highly recommend reading it out loud, or at least reading it out loud in your head.

Deaf UtopiaNyle DiMarcoMichalle Gould, Sage Hill SchoolReally fantastic memoir by the first Deaf winner of both America's Next Top Model and Dancing With the Stars. Co-written with a professional writer, it does a great job of exposing the reader to the ins-and-outs of Deaf Culture and the changes in the Deaf community over the years (the author comes from an intergenerational Deaf family and his experience is very different from his parents and grandparents). It has some interesting insights into the education system and Deaf students' experience with it, as well as some fun peeks behind the scenes of the reality show world.

This One SummerMariko TamakiChristina Pommer, Saint Stephen'sI've been trying to read more graphic novels, and this one is beautiful and heartbreaking and captures some of the confusing feelings about trying to make sense in your place in the world, with family, and with friends as a teen---set in a remote beach community

BabelR.F. KuangLianne Pang, 'Iolani SchoolI thought this book was brilliant. Check it out if you're a fan of historical fantasy, dark academica, or if you've ever read the Oxford English Dictionary for fun. ;)

Go As A RiverShelley ReadKaren Serach, Peddie SchoolA young girl in a small town in Colorado, falls in love with a drifter from a Four Corners tribal nation. It's a love story, coming-of-age, historical novel where resilience, found family and home prevail.
9
The FerrymanJustin CroninPatricia deWinter, Oakridge SchoolVery unique dystopian novel by the author of the Passage trilogy - page turner.
10
River Sing Me HomeEleanor ShearerChristina Karvounis, The Bolles School Historical fiction taking place in the Caribbean; strong main characters, atmospheric writing, excellent threads of motherhood, seeking home and connection to placeTara Peace seconds this recommendation!

WeywardEmilia HartTara Peace, La Jolla Country Day SchoolThis was a stellar, DEBUT (literally cannot believe this was a debut) novel that highlights all of the different ways women can be subjugated by men and by society in general (fantast/historical fiction).
12
The Guest Emma ClineTricia deWinter Oakridge SchoolDark but riveting, I could not put this book down!
13
Lawn BoyJonathan EvisonFelicia Ballard, Pingry SchoolYA novel often the subject of book challenges. I totally fell for the main character, Mike Munoz on his journey of self discovery.

A Tale for the Time BeingRuth OzekiNancy Florio, Westover SchoolThis is one of those epic novels that it's hard to put down. Two women - a documentary film maker struggling to write a memoir about her mother's life finds a diary inside a Hello Kitty lunchbox written by a Japanese schoolgirl that probably finds its way to the Vancouver coast during the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. I love this so much I periodically reread it.
15
The Grace YearKim LiggettNancy Florio, Westover SchoolThis is an emotionally charged coming-of-age novel that shouldn't be missed. Think Handmaid's Tale meets Hunger Games meets Lord of the Flies.
