A database of the number of assessments commissioned and the amount paid to NowMedical by local authorities in the five years from 2014
The associated story published on The Bureau of Investigative Journalism website
The name of the local authority
The number of medical assessments made for the council by NowMedical during that year
|[year] amount paid|
The amount paid to NowMedical by the council during that year
Any additional information from the local authority FOI response - this might contain information on whether the amount paid included training fees or if the council provided the number of invoices rather than the number of assessments as a proxy for the actual data.
Indicates that the council did not provide a number.
Indicates that the figure is an estimate calculated by the Bureau, see the methodology section below for more information
While each local authority in this dataset has used NowMedical in the five years since 2014, many do not have a contract in place with NowMedical as the amount paid to the company by those councils would fall below the thresold they require to launch a formal procurement process.
Two councils, Lewisham and Stevenage, provided the number of assessments by calendar years and the amounts paid by financial years. This should be considered when reporting.
Methodology for 2018(/19) estimates of the number of assessments
Local authorities were more often able to provide the amount paid to NowMedical than the number of medical assessments they commissioned from them.
This led us to estimate the number of medical assessments commissioned by 27 local authorities in 2018 or 2018/19 - depending on whether the council provided the data for calendar or financial years - to get a better sense of the number of assessments NowMedical might go through in a year.
We estimated the number of medical assessments commissioned by those local authorities by dividing the amount they paid NowMedical that year by £40 - the median cost per assessment. (Please note, we made conservative estimates by rounding down).
We found the median cost per assessment (£40) by calculating the average cost per assessment (the amount paid divided by the number of assessments) for the 71 authorities that were able to provide both the number of assessments and the amount they paid to NowMedical in 2018 or 2018/19.
In the piece linked at the top of this page, we also mention a estimated number of assesments by day. We found that number by dividing our total estimated number of assesments for 2018 and 2018/19 by 253 - the number of working day in a year in the UK.
If you report any number that was estimated by the Bureau or any number that was calculated using a number estimated by the Bureau, you should make sure to mention that this number is an estimate.
For example, this is how we reported the estimates in our piece...
"Through Freedom of Information requests the Bureau has learnt that the six-strong team, led by Dr John Keen, provides an estimated 14,000 assessments to councils per year, an average of 55 a day."
