The MWFA Sunday Masters social football competition is a full 11-a-side game that plays all year round on a Sunday morning, mostly in the traditional Manly-Warringah football catchment area. It has been running since the mid 1980’s, firstly as a totally independent group, and in its present form under the wing of MWFA since the early 2000’s. However, it is a financially independent organisation that is run by Mark Sheppard and goverened by a group of its members on behalf of everybody. Inclusion in the Masters is by invitation.
2
The Masters has two distinct seasons; Winter where around 8-10 teams participate, and Summer where 30+ teams participate. Unless the governance group for the competition makes a very rare exception, the competition is only open to over 35 players.
3
Sunday Masters is not actually a competition in the truest sense as there are no tables, points, referees. There are no league tables and the whole comp is just one long sequence of friendlies games where the emphasis is on having a Sunday morning game of football with a group of friends in a less competitive framework than traditional Saturday competitions. It is expected that teams will referee themselves and ensure that games are played in sporting manner.
4
Our summer season goes from mid-September to the end of March (i.e. covers the whole period outside traditional winter comps) and only breaks for 3 weeks at Xmas. However, we typically we drop a large number of teams in March due to them playing their pre-season trials games for their winter competitions, so a full draw only covers until the end of February.
5
Most summer teams are amalgams of multiple winter over 35’s teams. There are not enough weekends available for all teams to play each other. Until recently teams have not been graded in any way so the levels of teams is quite wide (from over 35 div 1 standard down to over 35 division 8 standard) with all teams having a wide spread of standards.
6
The majority of games are played on the northern beaches on Warringah and Pittwater playing fields (although one of the teams from North Sydney has arranged a number of fixtures at the new artificial field at Cammeray last year). We use full-size pop-up portable goals where goal posts are not available. Every team has one of these that have been bought on behalf of the competition.
7
Games are scheduled to start at 8:00 and run for four 20 minute quarters. The only rule that is outside standard rules of football is that slide tackles are absolutely forbidden. Unlimited interchange is allowed and teams are strongly encouraged to share players to provide a fair contest should either side have less than 11 players.
8
Fees are for individuals, not team. For the 2025-26 summer season the 3 levels were:
9
1. MWFA registered winter players who continue through summer ($50),
10
2. Out of district players who registered elsewhere through their association as winter players ($105) and
11
3. Totally new players who did not register through the FFA online system to play winter ($125).
12
13
Fees vary because there are multiple components that make up the total that may or may not have been paid depending on which district you played (or not) in winter.
14
15
Registration for the comp is online using the FFA Playfootball system. Team payments are collected by the team manager and sent to the Masters bank account for payment on to MWFA.
