| WHAT: | The Wisconsin Nutrition Education Database is designed to seamlessly integrate nutrition education into everyday classroom activities and learning outcomes. By gathering reliable, high-quality nutrition curricula in one central resource and aligning them with core subjects like science, the database makes it easier for educators to include nutrition concepts without adding extra lessons or demands on limited classroom time. The ultimate goal is to ensure more children receive meaningful nutrition education that supports the development of lifelong healthy habits.

| WHY: | The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (WI DPI) offers the Wisconsin Standards for Nutrition to help educators incorporate nutrition education into their classrooms. These standards outline expectations for student learning at the end of each grade level. However, nutrition education standards are not mandatory and are often not included in students’ educational experiences. It is well-established that nutrition education plays a vital role in promoting students’ health, well-being, and academic success.

| WHO: | The Database is geared towards Wisconsin educators of grades K-12. Curricula is included for a variety of age/grade groups.
| ||||
| HOW: | The WI DPI Academic Standards served as the foundation for linking nutrition education curricula to core academic subjects. Each lesson within a nutrition education resource is listed as an individual row in the spreadsheet. For example, the Nutritious, Delicious, Wisconsin curriculum consists of nine lessons, each represented in its own row. Every lesson was reviewed and aligned with the WI DPI Academic Standards to identify key subject areas and determine how each lesson supports relevant learning priorities. Please note the tabs at the bottom of this Google Sheet. You are currently viewing the “Instructions” tab. The adjacent “Science” tab connects the Wisconsin Standards for Science with various nutrition education curricula. Future updates will include additional tabs for other core subjects such as Mathematics and English Language Arts. Spreadsheet Design: Within the core subject tabs, Column A lists the overarching subject topics associated with each nutrition education lesson. This column can be used to search for curriculum by general subject area. Columns B through I provide key details about each lesson, including the lesson title, the curriculum resource it comes from, page numbers of the lesson, author(s), a brief lesson description, targeted grade range, estimated time required, and the materials needed to implement the lesson. Beginning in Column J, you will see two color-coded rows that outline the learning priorities for each subject area. Each lesson is then aligned with the appropriate learning priorities based on the targeted grade group, illustrating how the lesson supports specific academic standards. Searching: To search within the Database for a specific subject topic, grade group, or learning priority, select ctrl-F on your keyboard and enter the applicable term in the search box that populates on the type righthand corner of your screen.

| Providing Feedback: We want your feedback! At the top of each core subject spreadsheet (in column F) you will see a hyperlinked “Teacher Feedback Form.” Click the hyperlink to access a Google Form to share information about any of the lessons you used with your students. Feedback can include how well the learning priorities tie to the lesson, any additional learning priorities that should be added for the lesson, an overall review of how you and your students liked the lesson, and if it was suitable for the grade range indicated in the database. As feedback is received, it will be added to each spreadsheet for public viewing and updates will be made to the Database content.
