15 | J.R.R. Tolkien was born in South Africa on the 3rd of January 1892. He was of German descent on his father's side, which was where the Tolkien name originated. Tolkien, who often referred to himself as a philologist (someone who studies languages), something he developed further as he worked on the Oxford Dictionary after WWI. He also was an avid letter writer, writing thousands of them in his lifetime. He wrote them as part of his work, to friends and family and even famously wrote incredibly detailed and illustrated letters to his children from Santa Claus. His wife Edith and children Christopher, Michael, Priscilla and John certainly received their fair share. | |||||
