The Superintendent Research Project began in July 2021 as a means of sourcing and centralizing data on superintendents across the country’s 500 largest school districts. To date, there was no centralized, publicly available data source on superintendents across the county.

To begin, we identified the 500 largest districts using from the 2019-2020 school year from EISi, the Elementary and Secondary Information System provided by the National Center for Education Statistics. Then, we researched each individual district to gather information on their current and former superintendent(s). Since our second update (from April 2022), we have included similar information for state superintendents, including Washington D.C., in which the city's superintendent is named by the mayor.

With regards to demographic information about the superintendents, we gathered information from publicly available sources including news articles, superintendent biographies, and district webpages. We validated and verified the data using a two-person verification approach. The information provided here is current as of July 2023.

Overall, our aim is to provide a centralized data source on superintendents in the country’s largest school districts and state superintendents. Our hope is that making this information publicly available will allow researchers and journalists to gain a deeper understanding of the nature of public education leaders with regards to demographics, transitions, and trajectories.

Gender data is determined by the pronouns used in the superintendent’s biography, or in news articles about the superintendents.
