05-12-2022CHIPPEWASTHLT LANE CLOSURELayout #55NEAR MISSNONENOFor the incident on May 12, 2022, county crews responded at approximately 4:00 PM to a pavement buckle of both EB lanes on STH 29 near exit 72.  The location was near a curve with cable median along the north shoulder and guard rail along the south shoulder.  The crew completed their work at approximately 10:00 PM.  I arrived at the scene at approximately 9:00 PM as the crew worked to patch the passing lane.  Semis were passing by at 60 -75 MPH in the driving lane a few feet from our traffic cones.  It was around that time that a motorist abruptly slowed down to see what was happening in the work zone.  The next motorist behind them didn’t see them slow down as they were also watching to see what we were doing.  Instead of crashing into the first motorist or swerving to the right towards guard rail, their instinct was to swerve into the traffic cones towards our employees, come to a screeching halt, and then speed off without stopping. The cones had sequential roadside flares attached to the top of them which were sent airborne, but fortunately did not strike anyone.  Had someone been standing there (which most of us were at one point), the motorist could have easily struck them.

02-10-2022ROCKI-39/90INCIDENT (PROPERTY)COUNTY VEHICLE DAMAGE? PRIVATE VEHICLE DAMAGE?We had just finished up a guardrail accident repair and were picking up our work zone when our attenuator was hit.  Thankfully, no one was injured.  We did not have anyone in the truck, fortunately.  We were down one staff, otherwise me most likely would have had someone in the truck as they were finishing up taking down the work zone and planning to head to the next location. We were in the far left lane, the box truck hit the attenuator, tore off the arrow board, ripped open his truck box and moved across two and a half lanes to the right shoulder. He got out of his truck and proceeded to try and pick up debris. He then got back in his truck and headed up the interstate to the Newville Park and Ride. No one was injured, but our crew was fairly shook up. The attenuator worked as it was supposed to.
