Snipe, 4+C.Buzzards, juv Goshawk into Carr Wood, Sparrowhawk, juv Peregrine, 2 Kestrels, 2 Ravens, 1 Kingfisher, c35 Redwings. A reasonable gull roost though nothing out of the ordinary.

An interesting gull roost with an adult Iceland Gull, the first of the winter, with two first-winter Yellow-legged Gulls as well as an adult Caspian-type Gull not studied well enough to confirm and a large Glaucous hybrid type seen for the third time this week.

Nothing unusual in the gull roost though good numbers with c2000 Herring and c910 G.B.B.Gulls.

9 January 2017A blue Snow Goose was with c60 Greylags, 3 Gadwall, 3 Wigeon, 52 Cormorants, 47 G.C.Grebes, 59 Common Snipe was an excellent count and a Ringed Plover was the first of the year and only the second January record for the site. 2 Willow Tits, c10 Goldfinches and 5+ Linnets. The gull roost produced the goods again with an adult Iceland Gull, probably last week's bird and a juvenile Glaucous Gull. A few highlights over the weekend included 13 Goosander on Friday (6th), 47 G.C.Grebes, c150 Pinkfeet over, 2 Shoveler, Glaucous -type hybrid in the roost and 3 Woodcocks out of Carr Wood on Saturday (7th) and 64 Greylags, 4 Tree Sparrows, c40 Siskins and a Brambling on Sunday (8th).

The Snow Goose was still with 59 Greylags, 5 Gadwall, 2 Tufteds, 2 Goldeneye, 2 Goosander, 11 Coots, 46 G.C.Grebes, 6 Little Grebes, c400 Lapwings, 1 Sparrowhawk, 2 C.Buzzards, 1 Willow Tit, 3 Redwings and 4 Linnets. A second-winter Iceland Gull was in the gull roost, the third 'white-winger' of the year.

The 'blue' Snow Goose was still present with 58 Greylag Geese, 12 Canada Geese, 5 Gadwall, 10 Tufteds, drake Pochard, 2 Goosander, 1 Goldeneye, 6 Little Grebes, 418 Lapwings, 3 C.Buzzards, 6 Linnets, 1 Willow Tit. A second-winter Iceland Gull was again  in the roost.

60 Greylag and 27 Canada Geese but no sign of the Snow Goose this morning, 5 Gadwall, 156 Teal, 98 Mallard, 13 Tufteds, drake Pochard, 3 Goldeneye (two drakes), 5 Goosander (two drakes), 47 G.C.Grebes, 8 Little Grebes, 13 Coot, c400 Lapwings, 11 Linnets and 10 Goldfinches in the car park plus a single Lesser Redpoll at Carr Pond.

48 Greylag and 13 Canada Geese, c140 Pink-footed Geese flew north-west in two skeins, 7 Gadwall, 4 Tufteds, 4 Goldeneye (two drakes), 9 Goosander, 12+ Moorhens, Woodcock out of Carr Wood at dusk, 42 G.C.Grebes, 8 Little Grebes, Goshawk disturbing the roosting gulls, 3 Sparrowhawks, male Kestrel, 4+ C.Buzzards, Tawny Owl calling at dusk, 2 Kingfishers,c200 Starlings at Highoredish, c90 Redwings, 1 Willow Tit, few Siskins, 7 Lesser Redpolls, 2 Linnets, c10 Goldfinches and a Brambling at Highoredish. A juvenile Glaucous Gull arrived in the roost early at 1430 with later 4 Yellow-legged Gulls(3x1stW's and single 3rdW), 2560 Herring Gulls and 1050 Great b-b Gulls.

A Pinkfoot with the Greylags, 9 Goosanders, 4+ Goldeneye, juvenile Goshawk showing very well and a Green Woodpecker. In the roost 1st and 3rd winter Yellow-legged Gulls and a probable juvenile Kumlien's Gull late on.

In poor conditions this morning little of note; 11 Canada Geese, 2 Gadwall, 5 Tufted Ducks, drake Goldeneye, 45 C.Snipe out on the west bank in the wet conditions, 1 Grey Wagtail, 2 Meadow Pipits, 6 Redwings and c10 Linnets.

Nine Whooper Swans arrived at 1045 and stayed till late afternoon at least. Almost certainly the same group had flown NW over Carr Vale NR earlier, it was encouraging to see two juveniles in the herd, most recent records at Ogston have involved only adults. Also 2 Gadwall, 2 Wigeon, 4 Tufteds (all drakes), 4 Goldeneye (again all drakes), c580 Lapwings with a single Golden Plover, 52 C.Snipe, 2 Willow Tits, Kingfisher and 134 Redwings

2 Wigeon, 7 Tufteds, 5 Goldeneye (3 drakes), 11 Goosander, c530 Lapwings, 1 Kingfisher, 1 Willow Tit. Glaucous-type hybrid in the roost before a mass-panic caused most of the gulls to leave.

The 'blue' Snow Goose has returned with just 2 Greylag and one Canada Goose, a female Gadwall, 7 Tufteds, 6 Goldeneye, 7 Little Grebes, c530 Lapwings, 20+ Snipe, 1 Kingfisher and a Willow Tit. A Grey Heron was back at the nest-site today.

Pintail (quite scarce here-usually only two or three records a year), 8 Tufteds, drake Pochard, 4 Goldeneye, 15 Goosander, a Little Egret ( unusual winter record), 10 Little and 47 G. C. Grebes, 13 Coots, c500 Lapwings, few Herring and 3 Common Gulls flew NE, a single Skylark over, 1 Grey Wagtail, 1 Willow Tit, 1 Redwing and a Yellowhammer.

52 Greylags with the first-winter Pinkfoot and just one (injured) Canada Goose, 5 Gadwall, 3 Wigeon, 13 Tufted Ducks, 2 Pochard, 2 Goldeneye, 2 Goosander, 54 G.C.Grebes (most so far this winter), c150 Lapwings, 17 Snipe, 3+ Sparrowhawks, male Kestrel, 96 Redwings and a Willow Tit. The gull roost was basically poor with low numbers and many birds moving on before dark, despite this the final gathering of c30 B.H.Gulls and c200 'bigs' included a juvenile Glaucous Gull and a second-winter Yellow-legged Gull.

47 Greylags with a single Pink-footed Goose, 2 Canada Geese, 2 Gadwall, 3 Tufted Ducks, 1 Pochard, 2 Goldeneye, 6 Goosanders, 7 Little Grebes, 2 C. Buzzards. The gull roost looked reasonably promising early on but after a series of 'scares' not a single gull remained on the water by 1645.

52 Greylags with a single Pink-footed Goose and one Canada Goose, 3 Gadwall, 5 Tufted Ducks, drake Pochard, 3 Goldeneye (one drake), 14 Goosanders (7 drakes), 5 Little and 48 G.C.Grebes, a fairly small (by Ogston standards) though productive gull roost with a first-winter Iceland Gull, 1stW Caspian Gull (with a probable unconfirmed adult also), 1stW Yellow-legged Gull and an adult Herring/LBBGull hybrid. A Kingfisher in Milltown Inlet, 2 Peregrines, male Kestrel, 2 Ravens and 25 Redwings.

4 January 2017The monthly bird walk produced the goods with c10 Waxwings in the garden opposite the top of hide lane. Also 55 Greylags with the single Pinkfoot still, drake Gadwall, 10 Tufteds, 5 Goldeneye, 8 Goosanders, 32 GCGrebes, c360 Lapwings including the leucistic bird, 2 Common Gulls, 2 Ravens, 2 Skylarks over,  13 Redwings and 4 Lesser Redpolls by Carr Pond, A lot of disturbance at the gull roost again, the culprit being a juvenile male Goshawk, though a first-winter Caspian Gull was found in Chapel Bay.

9 March 2017Highlight today and bird of the year so far was a Great Grey Shrike in the South (Fisherman's) car park at around 1500 hrs. Though not seen subsequently well worth looking out for tomorrow, this is Ogston's sixth record with the last in the early part of 2007 being the first for thirty-five years. Also 33 Greylag and 21 Canada Geese, 2 Mandarin, 3 Gadwall, 2 Tufteds, 2 Goldeneye, 11 Goosander, 4 Oystercatchers and a Curlew.

16 March 2017An adult Kittiwake circled the res 0940-55 before heading off (typically) NE and yesterday's Redshank was still present in front of WCP before being flushed by a Carrion Crow and leaving, again, NE. Also single Mute Swan, 4 Mandarins, 4 Tufteds, 1 Goldeneye, 4 Oystercatchers, 9 Chiffchaffs and 22 Fieldfares W.

18 March 2017Highlight was the year's first Little Ringed Plover that circled with two Ringed Plovers at just after twelve before heading off WNW. Also a Mute Swan, 13 Greylags and 19 Canada Geese, 4 Mandarins, 10 Gadwall, 11 Tufteds, 2 Goldeneye, 5 Goosander, usual few Buzzards, 4 Oystercatchers, one Snipe, 9 Common Gulls thru, ad Peregrine, 5+ Chiffchaffs and c40 Linnets.

19 March 2017At least 5 Mandarins, 4 Gadwall (2 pairs), a Wigeon,  two pairs of Shoveler (first for some time),11 Tufteds, 3 Goldeneye, 5 Goosander, 5+  C.Buzzards, 2 Sparrowhawks and the juvenile male Goshawk again causing mayhem amongst the local Wood Pigeons and Crows; often the first indication of it's presence, 4 Oystercatchers, 1/2 Little Ringed Plovers, 2 Curlews, single Common Snipe and at least seven Chiffchaffs.

20 March 2017In bad conditions this morning 6 Mandarins, 4 Gadwall, 8 Tufteds, 3 Goldeneye, usual 'parcel' of Oystercatchers, 7+ C. Snipe, 6 Curlews, 5+ Chiffchaffs and a Willow Tit and female Brambling on the feeders. Two out of five Meadow Pipits grounded by heavy rain in front of the Member's hide had a beautiful apricot wash across the upper and middle breast.

21 March 2017An adult Kittiwake, the second this month, was present from at least 1510 to 1555 when it departed SW without landing. Also a second Sand Martin showed intermittently in the morning though was difficult to locate feeding high over the res. In addition 56 Canada and 19 Greylag Geese, 4 Mandarins, 6 Gadwall, 1 Goldeneye, 2 Goosander, 5+ C. Buzzards, 4 Oystercatchers, 1 C. Snipe, 1 Curlew, ad Peregrine, 3 Ravens up together, 4 Jays, 6 Meadow Pipits N/NW and a female Brambling on the feeders.

24 March 201741 Whooper Swans were present from early morning and stayed throughout the day. The largest herd seen actually down on the reservoir, it was good to see it included sixteen young birds. Fairly quiet otherwise.

7 April 20172 Mute Swans, 3/4 Mandarins, 4 Gadwall, 4 Wigeon, 13 Tufteds with apparently the same returning drake Tufted/Pochard hybrid from previous years. This bird caused some confusion when it turned up the day after Derbyshire's, to date, only Lesser Scaup in March 2013. Good job the latter was not a single observer record. Also a Red Kite NE 1020-28, an Osprey at 1300 (with fish) and again later in the afternoon, with a late report of one Saturday that's five records in the last eight days, same bird?, different bird?, any details on rings or state of moult appreciated, Goshawk reported in the afternoon, 2 Sparrowhawks, few Buzzards, 2/3 Oystercatchers, 3 LRPlovers ( one of which left NE at 1100) with four later in the day, 2 Curlews SE with 3 in the evening. A report of a Hobby would be very early, the earliest by a week in fact here and further details would, again, be appreciated. A single House Martin, c40 Sand Martins, 11 Swallows and the expected (so far) warblers.
