How GiveWell thinks about moral weights

GiveWell's "moral weights" are a set of subjective numerical values that represent how much value we place on different types of outcomes achieved by the programs we fund, like increasing consumption and averting mortalities. We use moral weights so we can directly compare the cost-effectiveness of programs that achieve different types of outcomes. You can read more about how we arrived at the moral weights we use in our cost-effectiveness analyses in this write-up: GiveWell's 2020 moral weights. You can read more about how we use cost-effectiveness estimates in our grantmaking on this page: How We Use Cost-Effectiveness Estimates in Our Grantmaking.
