|FCC 149 HUGO|
|On this episode of Finding Christ in Cinema, we crank the projector and look for Christian themes in Martin Scorsese's (one and only) family film HUGO. What is Hugo's purpose in the world? What does it have to do with kindness and compassion? All that and more in 3, 2, 1!||GUEST(S)|
|Hey, come on in. Admission is free. Grab a bowl of popcorn (extra butter, of course) and find a seat smack dab in the middle - It’s time for Finding Christ in Cinema, episode 149.|
I’m Michael, I’m Brenden.
Join us and together we’ll dig deeper into the silver-screen classics of yesteryear as well as the box-office hits of today, we’ll take a closer look at the stories they tell, and see if we find the face of Jesus looking back.
We’re gonna explore the deeper meanings of these films; the plots and their twists; the characters and their choices; and how we can relate them to the gospel of salvation, and ultimately our Christian walk.
You are tuned in to Finding Christ in Cinema on the GCTNetwork.

Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?

SFX #1: 00:00 - 00:35
Purpose. | What do you mean? | Everything has a purpose, even machines. Clocks tell the time, and trains take you places. They do what they're meant to do. Like Monsieur Labisse. Maybe that's why broken machines make me so sad. They can't do what they're meant ot do. Maybe it's the same with people. If you lose your purpose, it's like you're broken.
SFX #2: 00:44 - 01:23
Right after my father died, I'd come up here a lot. I'd imagine the whole world was one big machine. Machines never come with any extra parts, you know. They always come with the exact amount they need. So I figured, if the entire world was one big machine, I couldn't be an extra part. I had to be here for some reason. And that means you have to be here for some reason, too.

Hebrew, hesed: lovingkindness, mercy, compassion, faithfulness
What is my purpose?
Micah 6:8 NASB
He has told you, O man, what is good;
And what does the Lord require of you
But to do justice, to love kindness [hesed],
And to walk humbly with your God?
Luke 10:37 NASB
And he said, “The one who showed mercy [Grk. eleos] toward him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do the same.”
Matthew 9:13; 12:7
Hosea 6:6 YLT
For kindness [hesed] I desired, and not sacrifice, And a knowledge of God above burnt-offerings.
Ephesians 2 (especially vs. 4).
|Matthew 9:13 NASB|
But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire compassion, and not sacrifice,’ for I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.

|PS Philip Comment on SCHINDLER’S LIST: Influence by Compassion | FCC 148||Hey guys! Wow, what a great job with a great movie. This is a film I've seen twice, and plan to watch again with my youngest son. It's important to remember the Holocaust and teach our kids about it. I mentioned the Netflix documentary FIVE CAME BACK a while ago, and George Stevens directed a film for the war effort called NAZI CONCENTRATION CAMPS that was apparently made as evidence of German atrocities. It's on Netflix, and I highly recommend it, with a warning for horrifically brutal content. I also watched THE HIDING PLACE earlier this year for the first time, a film I had been meaning to see for years. It's based on the autobiography of Corrie ten Boom, and tells the story of her Christian family and their effort to hide Jews during WWII. It's fascinating to see an explicitly Christian film from the 1970's that was so well done.|
Thanks for the show guys, I think you'll have a more cheerful time with HUGO- and man is that movie teeming with Christian themes! #muhweeladgimli
