Marta SilvaTo Thrive in the Borderlands: Avoiding Acculturation of Latinx Students in Heritage ProgramsMy session addresses issues of acculturation in Heritage Language classes where a version of what heritage means contrasts our students' backgrounds and the development of their identities. As I present this call to all HL teachers to reflect on their onwn positionality when they stand in front of their HL students, I present my own path as a poet, a researcher, and an educator.

Alana KubeczkaDifferentiation in Reading and Writing through a Structured Framework: Reaching Them All, In person or OnlineThis session focuses on literacy instruction through a structured framework. Several reading and writing ideas are presented. You will learn about some strategies to use small groups to reach all ability levels within your heritage class. The session also gives a quick idea about how to make this still happen online or in a hybrid situation. Although these methods are some currently used in a middle school heritage program, they are applicable to high school as well and have been shown to be effective in all levels.

Nina HidalgoThe Magic of Pleasure ReadingThis session focuses on how to create a successful pleasure reading program in the heritage language classroom. We will talk about logistics of building a classroom library, launching the program, establishing a routine, and maintaining student accountability. With a strong FVR program, convince your students to see themselves as readers, help them build confidence in their first language, and boost literacy across the board.

Michaela McCaugheyTranslation and Arts-Integration in a Heritage Language ClassroomThis session gives real-life examples of working on translations in your heritage classes, both recognizing translation as an art and integrating the arts within it. There are tips and ideas of how to structure translation practice as a stand-alone unit or throughout your year.

Christopher Jahdai Jeffords"Tu Voz Cuenta" Student Voice and Choice in the Heritage Language Classroom
In this session, I discuss ways in which you can begin to lay the groundwork for podcasting in your Heritage language classroom. I discuss how I have used podcasting in my classroom as a tool for student’s voice. I walk you through the process of teaching about podcasting, equipment used, and free online resources you can use to get started. I also discuss briefly about assessment of students podcast. All information is presented broadly enough that allows teachers to easily implement podcasting into their classrooms, and to cater to their classroom needs.

Courtney will present examples of how she has used these tools with her students and will share examples of her distance learning lessons and units as well as free resources you can use with your heritage class.

Kristin MontgomeryConverting your curriculum to online learningThis session will help you plan your curriculum for this coming year by showing how you can convert your current curriculum to online or hybrid learning or create an online unit from scratch. Participants will see examples of online units and lessons and suggestions for online projects.

Sam FinnesethRecipe for Success: Middle School Heritage Curriculum DevelopmentThis session is for anyone with a middle school heritage program that is new or not yet formalized. There are many pieces to consider from a curricular standpoint: standards, purpose, vertical alignment. There is even more to consider when talking about middle schoolers and their unique developmental needs, identity journies, and weird smells.
