What this template doesWhy scope matters
8
Captures the full scope of a project in one place: goals, deliverables, boundaries, constraints, and assumptions. Most project delays aren't caused by bad execution but by unclear scope at the start.
9
The In Scope / Out of Scope section is the most important part — it prevents scope creep by making exclusions explicit."We didn't know that was included" costs too much in project management.
10
Includes a change request log so any additions to scope are tracked and approved, not silently absorbed.A signed scope document gives you something to point to when new requests arrive mid-project.
11
12
How to use itChange control
13
1. Scope Statement: write a clear one-paragraph description of what the project will produce.Any request that adds to or changes the agreed scope should go through the Change Request Log.
14
2. In / Out of Scope: list everything explicitly. When in doubt, write it out. Each request gets an ID, description, impact assessment, and an approved/rejected status.
15
3. Deliverables: each deliverable needs a name, description, and acceptance criteria.A rejected request is not a failure — it's a decision. Document it to avoid re-litigating later.
16
4. Constraints & Assumptions: write down anything you're taking for granted.
17
5. Get it signed off before work starts. Save the signed version.
