The Scottish Family Health Study / Generation ScotlandGS:SFHS24,000ScotlandScottishyespossiblenoarray 600kIllumina HiScanyesyesyesyesyesclosed
500 USD
GS:SFHS is a family-based genetic epidemiology study with DNA and socio-demographic and clinical data from about 24 000 volunteers across Scotland aged 18–98 years, from February 2006 to March 2011. Biological samples and anonymized data form a resource for research on the genetics of health, disease and quantitative traits of current and projected public health importance. Specific and important features of GS:SFHS include the family-based recruitment, with the intent of obtaining family groups; the breadth and depth of phenotype information, including detailed data on cognitive function, personality traits and mental health; consent and mechanisms for linkage of all data to comprehensive routine health-care records; and ‘broad’ consent from participants to use their data and samples for a wide range of medical research, including commercial research, and for re-contact for the potential collection of other data or samples, or for participation in related studies and the design and review of the protocol in parallel with in-depth sociological research on (potential) participants and users of the research outcomes. These features were designed to maximize the power of the resource to identify, replicate or control for genetic factors associated with a wide spectrum of illnesses and risk factors, both now and in the future.

Midlife in the USMIDUSUSAmixedyesyesnonoyesyesmixed
The first national survey of Midlife Development in the U.S. (MIDUS) was conducted in 1995/96 by the MacArthur Foundation Research Network on Successful Midlife Development. The study was conceived by a multidisciplinary team of scholars from fields of psychology, sociology, epidemiology, demography, anthropology, medicine, and health care policy. Their collective aim was to investigate the role of behavioral, psychological, and social factors in accounting for age-related variations in health and well-being in a national sample of Americans. In addition to a national probability sample (N = 3,487), the study included over-samples in select metropolitan areas (N = 757), a sample of siblings (N = 950) of the main respondents, and a national sample of twin pairs (N=1,914).

Vietnam Experience Study
VES4,500USAmixednoyesnono3300yesyesyesopen0
The Vietnam Experience Study was a multidimensional assessment of the health of Vietnam veterans. From a random sample of enlisted men who entered the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1971, 7,924 Vietnam and 7364 non-Vietnam veterans participated in a telephone interview. A random subsample of 2,490 Vietnam and 1,972 non-Vietnam veterans also underwent a comprehensive health examination, including medical examination, laboratory tests, and a psychological evaluation. During the telephone interview, Vietnam veterans reported current and past health problems more frequently than did non-Vietnam veterans. The Vietnam veterans also reported more health problems among their children, including more birth defects, and more problems with impaired fertility.

The results of the medical and laboratory examinations showed few current objective differences in physical health between the two groups. The Vietnam veterans did have more hearing loss. Also, among a subsample of 571 participants who had semen samples evaluated, Vietnam veterans had lower sperm concentrations and lower mean proportions of "normal" sperm. Despite differences in sperm characteristics, however, the Vietnam and non-Vietnam veterans had fathered similar numbers of children. An examination of hospital birth records showed that the children of Vietnam veterans were not more likely to have birth defects recorded on hospital birth records than were children of non-Vietnam veterans. The rates of birth defects were similar among children of Vietnam and non-Vietnam veterans. The psychological evaluation found that certain psychological problems were more common among the Vietnam veterans than among non-Vietnam veterans. These problems included depression, anxiety, and combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder.

The LifeLines Cohort Study is a large population-based cohort study and biobank that was established as a resource for research on complex interactions between environmental, phenotypic and genomic factors in the development of chronic diseases and healthy ageing. Between 2006 and 2013, inhabitants of the northern part of The Netherlands and their families were invited to participate, thereby contributing to a three-generation design. Participants visited one of the LifeLines research sites for a physical examination, including lung function, ECG and cognition tests, and completed extensive questionnaires. Baseline data were collected for 167 729 participants, aged from 6 months to 93 years. Follow-up visits are scheduled every 5 years, and in between participants receive follow-up questionnaires. Linkage is being established with medical registries and environmental data. LifeLines contains information on biochemistry, medical history, psychosocial characteristics, lifestyle and more. Genomic data are available including genome-wide genetic data of 15 638 participants. Fasting blood and 24-h urine samples are processed on the day of collection and stored at -80 °C in a fully automated storage facility. The aim of LifeLines is to be a resource for the national and international scientific community. Requests for data and biomaterials can be submitted to the LifeLines Research Office [LLscience@umcg.nl].

The Twins Early Development Study is one of the foremost ongoing twin studies of its kind in the world. With the help of over 15,000 families, TEDS researchers and academics are exploring how we develop through childhood and adolescence and what factors contribute to making each of us who we are. In this way, the great wealth of information gathered through the study is providing insights into how both nature (the genetic material and characteristics we inherit from our parents) and nurture (our environment) contribute to individual development in a range of areas, such as cognitive and learning abilities, and behaviour. The study has been going since 1994 and is based at King's College London under the leadership of Professor Robert Plomin, ranked among the 100 most eminent psychologists in the history of science.
