Most of the Bell Nursery cutting material was planted on 5/8/2015 in about a 1000 square foot nursery (40' x 12.5' and 19' x 18') via major 14 rows. The ramet cuttings were 6" long with diameters ranging from 4mm to ~14 mm. Mini-stools were planted on an outside row ~6" apart that consisted of a 1-0 stock plant with a 6" stem and the lateral roots cut to 1" length. All material was cut earlier (mid March) banded with their planting label and stored in a refrigerator until planting. The cutting material was planted in rows planted on 30" centers with dual rows of cuttings 4" apart and cuttings planted 2" apart in each row. The internal 4" between the rows was covered with Miracle Gro Sphagnum Peat Moss, which had some plant food and absorbed water easily. The area between the double rows was covered with green grass clipping mulch and 3 mid Summer applications of 20-20-20 water soluable Jacks's Plant Food. These materials helped to reduce weed growth and prevented hardening of the top soil layer that is typical on this site after repeated watering. The nursery was irrigated as needed with a 5' tall sprinkler. 2013-Bell-Nursery-Photos

Condiderations for 2016 Nursery:
11
There were 14 major rows in the 2015 nursery. The 2016 nursery will consist of 3 categories: Mini-stools (3/clone with 2+ yr old stools), Replications (5 - 8" cuttings per clone) and Ortet ramets (4 - 8" cuttings per clone and the 1-0 stool). The mini-stools will use the first 5 rows and have 2-3 stools per clone (90/row x 5 rows = 450 stools - planted 5" apart) with an expected yield of about 7' of 12" field grade cuttings per stool with a 7 mm. minimum top dia. (21 12" cuttings/clone). The next 6 rows will consist of planting a replication of the same stool clones with 5 - 8" cuttings per clone planted 2" apart. The yield will vary per clone and surrounding competition. The data from these replications combined with the stools will provide useful Vigor Survival selection criteria. The final 3 rows of Ortet Ramets are reserved for the 2015 family ortets that grew to at least 5' tall. They will be cut to 4 cuttings at 8" each with the first section saved as a 1-0 mini-stool (5 total). These will be classified as "ODC1-0" replications. They are expected to yield one good 5' field grade whip and smaller 1-0 stock dependent upon cutting survival. The 8" cuttings should provide a better indication of rooting potential and more vigorous surviving plants. Note that these "ortets" are technically ramets since they were planted as 8" ortets in 2015 nursery. There is an expected 140 ODC1-0 clones to be planted. The better selections may yield 8' of field grade cuttings. While there may be ~280 clones tested in 2015 the final selection count may be hopefully ~100 new clones and about 30 parents/old clones for 2017.
