What is Malvern's Optional Attendance Status for the 2023/24 school year?Currently we are closed for Optional Attendance for all programs. For the 2023/24 school year we're closed for all programs. Registrations for our regular program are accepted if the student and a custodial parent or legal guardian reside within our catchment area. To find out our catchment area for our Regular (English) Program go to : https://www.tdsb.on.ca/Find-your/School

How can I find out if I am in Malvern's Catchment area for French Immersion or Extended French? To find out if Malvern is your home school for French Immersion or Exteneded French, you'll need to follow a few steps. First, use the link to input your home address and find out what school is your home school for English for Elementary: https://www.tdsb.on.ca/Find-your/School
Then use the next link and put in the name of your Home Elementary School: https://www.tdsb.on.ca/Elementary-School/School-Choices/French-Programs/School-Search
The link will tell you which French programs this elementary feeds into. If that school is a designated feeder school for Malvern's French Immersion or Extended French program, then Malvern is your "home school" for French Immersion or Extended French. If the designated school is not a feeder school for Malvern's French program, then you would be considered "out of area" and would not be able to attend Malvern's French Program.

If I attend a Specialized program at another school, can I change my mind and come to Malvern?Students who attend a Specialized program at a school retain their right to register at their home school, at appropriate breaks in the school year (i.e. at the start of sem 1 or the start of sem 2). This applies to the regular program only.
8
If I attend a Specialized program at another school, can I change my mind and come to Malvern for Fr. Imm or Ext. French?Students who have opted to attend a specialized program at another school will not be able to register at Malvern at a later date for the French Imm or Ext. French program. Students may register at Malvern for the regular program if they reside in the catchment area.

I attend one of Malvern's feeder schools for French Immersion or Extended French. What is the process for registering at Malvern's French Immersion or Extended French program?Course selections and support are handled by the grade 8 school staff. 12
If I attend one of Malvern's feeder schools for French Immersion or Extended French, does that mean I have the right to attend Malvern's French Immersion or Extended French program? Not necessarily. It depends on your address. Students who attend Malvern's feeder school for French Imm or Ext. French are elgibile to register for Malvern's French program if they reside in that feeder school's catchment area for the French Program pathway. The French pathway is based on the student's ENGLISH elementary home school. For example, if a student attends Glen Ames for French Immersion, but based on their address, their French pathway for grade 7 or 8 is a different TDSB school, and that school is not a feeder school for Malvern's Fr. Program, then they would not be eligible to attend Malvern's French program, as they would be considered out of area, and Malvern is Closed to out of area students.
13
If I attend one of Malvern's feeder schools for French Immersion or Extended French, can I register in Malvern's regular program. Students may register for the regular program if the student and a custodial parent or legal guardian reside within Malvern's catchment area. The program change will be handled by the feeder school. Please contact them to facilitate the transfer. Once a student leaves FI or Ext Fr. they cannot return back to the program at a future date.
14
Once I am enrolled in Malvern's French program, can I switch to the Regular Program at any point?Remaining at Malvern may be considered if the student lives with a custodial parent or legal guardian guardian and is within Malvern's catchment area for our Regular Program. Since Malvern is closed to Optional Attendance, this policy is stricly enforced. Once a student leaves a FI or Ext Fr. program, they cannot return back into the FI or Ext Fr. program.
15
If I spend a year in the French Immersion program, and then switch to Regular program (at Malvern or my Home School) will my French credits still count?Yes, if you have credits in Math or History that are French Imm or Ext. French Credits, and you switch to a Regular Program, those credits will still count as credits.
16
If I am enrolled in the French Immersion program, can I switch to the Extended French program.Students who are enrolled in a specialized program (such as French Immerson or Ext. French) are expected to continue in this pathway. Students are not permiiteed to switch from French Immersion to Exteneded French (or from Extended French to French Immersion).
17
If I am in the Fr. Imm program, and by the time I graduate I haven't obtained enough French credits, can I receive a bilingual certificate for the Ext. Program?Fr. Imm and Ext. Fr are considered 2 distinct programs, and students cannot go from one to the other. If you do not fulfill the requirments of the Fr. Imm program, then you cannot receive an Ext. French certificate.

I currently attend a French program outside of the TDSB, but I live in Malvern's catchment area? Can I register for Malvern's French Program?Currently we are closed for all programs. A student may register for our regular program if the student and a custodial parent or legal guardian reside within our catchment area for the regular program.

I currently attend a French program through the Catholic or French school board. Can I register for Malvern's French Program?Currently we are closed for all programs, including our French programs. Students from the Catholic or French Boards, who reside with a custodial parent or legal guardian and are in the catchment area for our regular program may register for our regular (English) program. Admission to the French Program is dependent on whether there is space in the program.

I currently attend a French program though the Catholic or French Board. Can I enrol in the regular program at Malvern and wait for a spot in the French program?Malvern will not be maintaining a wait list for the French program for students who have registered in our regular program. We will, however, keep a record of registered students from other boards who would prefer to be in the French Program. In the event that there is space in the program, these students will be considered. Malvern will not be able to confirm if there is space until late August/early September. Students who register for the regular program should do so with the understanding that there may not be an opportunity to switch to the French program.
22
What courses do students take in Grade 9 at Malvern? All students will take 8 courses, including 6 compulsory courses and 2 electives. Compulsory courses include English, Geography (Core, Extended and Immersion), French (Core, Extended and Immersion), Math (Core, Immersion option), Science, and Physical Education. Electives include Band, Vocal Music, Business, Learning Strategies, Visual Art, Exploring Technologies, and Spanish.

I would like to have my child exempt from the French requirement. What is the process for this? When students register for grade 9, they are scheduled into all grade 9 compulsory courses, which includes French. If a student has not received the requisite number of French hours in elementary school (because of withdrawal assistance in elementary school, or because they are newcomers) then the student will be offered a beginner level French course to fulfill this diploma requirement.
A French exemption/substitution may be considered after the student has attempted grade 9 French, and despite supports implemented at the school, still has a great deal of difficulty. In other cases, secondary school teams meet with the elementary team prior to the start of the school year to discuss transition plans for students, and there are times when the school team will recommend a French substitution for a particular student. In these cases, we review the student’s previous marks in French, as well as any psycho-educational assessment and/or IEP, where there is a specific recommendation that the student be exempt from French because of learning difficulties or exceptionalities that would affect 2nd language acquisition. If a request is made by the parent prior to the student arriving in grade 9, the principal would base their decision on these factors: recommendations from the feeder school, the student’s previous experience/achievement in French, and recommendations in an assessment or IEP.
French exemptions will be made only under exceptional circumstances. All students should choose French for their grade 9 course selection. If an exemption is approved, the school can make the timetable change at that time.
24
Under what circumstances do I need to complete an Optional Attendance form?Every year (around January) the TDSB desginates whether a particular school will be closed. If a school is "closed" they cannot accept any optional attendance forms. Based on the program deparment's projected enrollment for Malvern, we expect that Malvern will be closed to out-of-area students for several years.
25
How can I find out about extra curricular programs that Malvern currently runs? Please visit Malvern's Extra-Curricular website for information.
