CONTENT TOPICSReview of basic social studies skills such as analyzing information, summarizing, drawing conclusions and evaluating the validity of historical sources. Identifying bias and supporting historical evidence on social studies issues/events. Introduces students to the concept of identities in the diversity of peoples of African ancestry. This unit will discuss the African civilizations before 1619, including major eras, civilizations, social, cultural and political characteristics & developments, and trade systems before American slavery.Explores the contributions of African Americans during the colonial period.This unit explores the contributions and experiences of African Americans amidst the American Revolution and during the early history of the United States leading up to the Civil War.Explores the opportunities and challenges for African Americans after the Civil War and during Reconstruction.An exploration of reforms and restrictions imposed on African Americans particularly surrounding education and voting restrictions. Additionally, a look at the African American Renaissance and the development of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.Explores the causes and impacts of the Great Depression on African Americans, as well as the contributions and experiences during World War II on African Americans.This unit investigates the Civil Rights Movement, from ending segregation to the persisting challenges that still linger into the 1970’sThis unit will analyze the progress, opposition, and resistance to African American equality through the present day. Students will explore dejure and de facto systems that continue to create inequities in policing, education, government, and the daily life of African Americans. Students will understand how the success and limitations of key legislation after the Civil Rights Movement affect the African American experience today.
