**When your annoying uncle smugly makes a statement about tryptophan making everyone sleepy,

be sure to tell him that yes, tryptophan is a key building block of serotonin, and that melatonin

is a by-product of that reaction, and that yes, melatonin helps regulate sleep. However, the amount
41
of tryptophan necessary to actually make you sleepy is A LOT (like, orders of magnitude) more than
42
you get from turkey. No, Uncle Gus, you had three full plates which all included turkey and a mountain of
43
mashed potatoes with gravy, and then whole apple pie, then plopped yourself on the couch to watch
44
the Detroit Lions lose. That made you sleepy.
