| w | Definitely fair game. When places interview from November through February your choices change. Maybe you were being honest to more than one program and your preference changed as you learned more about another program.< yes exactly. | <- I would not consider this "fair game" at all. When you tell a program that they are your "number 1" you are informing them that you have made your final decision. You should not be telling a program that they're your number one until you are 100% sure of that fact.->it helps when you are good at talking in person so you don’t have to say “number 1” like in an email that is never looked at. Told my top 3 in person they are some variation of “my top program” “ranked at the top”, all 3 gave me the same feedback basically rtm. You lose that type of wording if you wait and rely on an email and it becomes super impersonal. <- So now you're guaranteed that 2/3 of those programs will know you lied to them. Good way to start your professional career.->think you misread, didn’t say “number 1” like you probably did in an email. Everyone has multiple programs ranked at the top. <- You said "my top program" which can only be true for one program. And don't kid yourself; those PD's can read right through your "ranked at the top" BS. They know they're not #1 unless you explicitly say #1. | —>Not OP but does not seem like it matters. If they like you, and you’ve expressed planning to rank them highly bc you like them it’s a fit. There’s nothing to see through, it’s just being honest. Should have told every program you liked that. An email a few weeks after a they already ranked all the applicants is not gonna make a real difference. ->the whole point of an interview is to communicate your interest in the program. The day itself is for learning about the program. Don’t think there’s anything wrong with telling many programs that you are highly interested in their program and ranking them at the top. I would call my top 5 the top. | Fucked a resident night before interview <— gotta love brotales <<-- did u pitch or catch brochacho? <— pitches a no hitter....we were both dudes actually <- that’s gay
| So really, can we get some clarification on this from the awards tab?:"Columbia +10: Haven’t met a single rotator who liked it <-- Why do you think they don't/what do they say? <-- Will update after match day <-- lol really" | you guys are crazy. they say its malignant, hours are godawful, no operating < that's it? you waited months to share this? < Regarding the hours - They were definitely bad as a rotator, but rotators had it worse than residents (primarily bc of call with no post call day). I didn’t think the residents worked too much more than other places I rotated. I do think that there is more scut work, though. Regarding operative experience - I couldn’t appreciate a significant difference in terms of the operative experience or resident skill between Columbia and another institution, which from reading seems to be considered be one of the best programs for training. I thought operative experience at both places was incredibly attending dependent, with experiences ranging from doing almost nothing to doing almost everything. I also thought there was a wide range of skill of the residents, with good and bad residents at both places. You guys really noticed that much of a difference in training/skill between Columbia and other places?<--yes, skills seemed contingent on whether or not residents had been to shock yet. Saw lots of residents be very lax about getting in the OR, almost like they didn't care; lots of fellows around who are happy to take over. | unhappy juniors, crappy senior residents, poor operative experience <- some of the resident interviewers had an unwelcoming vibe, left me with a bad impression; knowledge room was also dumb af, they specifically chose obscure topics rather than the bread and butter stuff to throw you off | Trash operative skills, don’t waste your time there < Having rotated at Columbia and three other programs, two of which are highly regarded for their operative experience, I’m not sure where all of the hate is coming from. While I acknowledge that away rotation experiences can vary relatively significantly based on several factors – service, attendings, residents – I thought Columbia’s operative experience was pretty strong relative to the other programs. I found that due to the smaller size of Columbia and the relatively personal feel of the program that residents were able to establish trust with the attendings, which led to more autonomy as 4’s and 5’s than I saw at any other institution. I was actually pretty surprised after reading some of the comments for the first time after I finished aways. | absolute garbage operative experience, alot of scut, you work ALOT without feeling like youre learning | i'd like to know if the people trashing this program were granted interviews after rotating there. ->I did not rotate or interview, but several rotators from my school did interview and hated rotation and did not rank on top 5. So I would say yes, lots of negativity from those interviewing as well. Have heard positives but I would say two thirds of those I spoke to didn’t like.-> thanks - did they tell you what they "hated" about the rotation? <- not op but I did rotate there, rotation itself is fine. Standard work-hard ortho sub I. The problem is with the residency itself. It doesn’t produce good surgeons and you do scut/PowerPoints for 5 years straight-> interesting because they get the best fellowships in the country every year at the same places, would think they wouldn't keep getting top fellowships if their residents suck as surgeons?->nah that’s really just name and research background and who makes calls for you-> | had residents admit that they are not equivalent to graduates from other programs but that's what fellowhip is about->if you're going to put this on this site you need to name names, it's "dirty laundry" after all...Matt something, don't recall last name.
| Penn state did MMI like interviews. Each room had a theme and a scenario question. Like explain to us the internet, or what would you do if a colleague was drunk or other random questions. The research room was like defending your dissertation. Left that room and interview day thinking i was dumber than a rock. It was rough. No one asked questions about you or to see if you were a good fit unless you had a minute left and completed the scenario. Idk maybe they are self-selecting for people. But I ranked them last. | <- Personally, I didn't have any problem with the type of questions or even the structure of the interview. My problem was with the interviewers themselves. You can accomplish that style of interview without acting like an asshole. But that was apparently lost on them. I didn't rank them last but they are in the bottom 3. <— i didn’t rank penn state for this reason.<—you would rather not match than go to penn state? | Complete boneheads They realized they fucked up after first interview day, but at that point they had to be fair and just went HAM day 2 | ->I was day 2, got great feedback from the interviewers. Internet room was a waste but every other room the faculty were nice to me and we had several minutes to talk after each scenario. Research room they said at the end they were super impressed given that they really try to search for info you don’t know to see how you react. Chairs rooms was 100% conversational. And the whole staff at breakfast, lunch and the tour was great. It really wasn’t that bad. I had a few interviews with themed rooms and this was on par. Also Janice the coordinator was the best coordinator of all programs I went to. I ranked mid to low bc it’s a rural area and juniors don’t see to get much autonomy but I like the people. | < the only thing I agree with you on is Janice. She's the sweetest. The rest... I think you're in a very, very small minority. <- Definitely very impressed with Janice, she really was great. Just didn't get a great vibe or overall great feel of the program. Interview day definitely played heavily into that feeling.<—at least everyone likes Janice!! | <-- thanks for all the details & calling out which program it was. This is what the whole dirty laundry tab should be made of!
| I met an absolute shithead of an interviewer and ended up not ranking the place even tho it has a decent reputation. I kinda don't want to name the program so that they keep that interviewer on the panel, so that other ppl will be able to see what some of the attendings are truly like and not rank that place. <- I had a similar experience. Was this on the west coast? | <- UCI?<— I fucking hated UCI—>I heard that Penn State had a great interview day => deets? < holy shit can't say enough bad things about Penn State's interview day. I debated not ranking. < what made it so bad? weird Qs?->start a new row up top for Penn state lol | <-- But as long as you don't mention his specific name, how will they know who it was? | Please tell us what program this was!! <- my money is on GW, one of their interviewers was so incredibly rude to every applicant who went in and wouldn't answer questions<— ding ding ding winner <-- that interviewers name is Debritz | <- Yup that's him, told me "what questions do you have" then proceded to say everything I asked was below him and not worth answering. Resident in the room with him looked so uncomfortable. Told another guy he wouldn't match because he had a beard in his ERAS photo. Absolute douche < Wow didn't interview there but this guy sounds like a real shit head. | <-- Debritz called OUT
| Any dirt on Toledo? | Nothing in particular, thought it was really weird on interview day though <- What about it? I personally didn’t think it was weird. Was actually pleasantly surprised with that program. Brutal location though.
| Chiefs are all dudes at a program. They used their own criteria to 'score' all the women who interviewed before making their ’rank list’ based on physical attributes <- Where is this? <- northeast program.. needless to say I didn't rank them high on my list -->> yessssssssss! --> Georgetown? < I would really love to know which program this is.... especially because Georgetown is on my list <- not Georgetown | < why not say which program at this point? +1 <- it's my home program and it makes it pretty obvious who I am < you could have just mentioned the program and the dirt without saying it was your home program then <-- Boston program <— so it’s BU or Tufts since Harvard has female chiefs < has to be Tufts | < no way it’s Tufts < why isn't it Tufts? < am familiar with the residents, faculty and culture of the Tufts program. They do not currently have any female chiefs, but usually do, and have many female residents. My bet is BU | JEEEEEEPAHS what is this shit do they think they work for a police/fire department?<— lol well some of us used to be police/firemen so watch your generalizations | oh my god | <- so was this Tufts? < nope <- yes < how do you know? OP here, yes <- anyone else now wondering where they were on this list? | Hey <—- hey! :)
| Walked into resident work room as a Chief was saying he’d “fuck that sub-i’s brains out by the end of this rotation” <- where? im pretty close to reporting a chief who hit on me the whole rotation... after i find out where i match. <- northeast by any chance? <— OP here. It’s midwestern program and I’m a female <-- is this Rush? | Jeeeeeepahs where was that what a fucked up kid<— good lord, this tab is not pulling any punches haha <-- holy shit, WHERE was this?! —were you that subi??<— OP was the chief, Shyamalan twist <- I fucked a chief as a sub-I.. <<- people naming their hand's "chief" now? <— LOL both my chiefs knows how I like it | Thats some reportable shit right there <- where do we report this kinda stuff to? < http://www.nrmp.org/reporting-investigation-violations/ | <<< this was not Rush <-- OP was this in Chicago? Also a female applicant and seriously disturbed by your experience
| Columbia: spot for rotators to comment. Why did every rotator I talked to dislike this program? <-- weird, i met some rotators with positive things to say about it | <-- lol damn, preemptive spots for Columbia and Vandy <- shit I ranked columbia in my top 5 +1 <— vandy is great spot, not for everyone though <— not for everyone = not for pussies<— real talk though. 17 | What other Rotators got the shaft from Emory after working your butt off for a month and being told by multiple attendings and residents you were coming back for an interview? <- me. but fuck em. and glad I didn't waste another day there->same thing happens at Sinai < this happens at numerous programs, not just Emory >> basically everywhere that doesn't offer interviews on the rotation. hurts though-yeah but a few places are less than 25% < yeah, Emory invited half, which is a ton compared to HSS and some other programs | they changed up the way did their interviews this year, it's nothing personal against anyone, they just simply invited fewer people <- if I rotated there and didn’t get an interview, that’s pretty personal < felt awful to know that I wasted a month of time and money and had nothing to show for it, definitely regret rotating there. If theyre not going to give every rotator a fair chance then why just accept fewer rotators? | <- TBH places that dont interview all of their rotators do give everyone a fair chance... Hard to take but you just weren't as good then as the other rotators. Whats the point of inviting everyone back for an interview if they already know you arent a good fit. It's a mercy kill. At least they're not making you spend the money to come back for a pointless interview <-- exactly, would rather not waste time and money going to a pity interview where they aren't going to rank you nearly high enough for you to ever match there anyway | it's about the females, man. and the change in chairman. < if you think that’s why you didn’t get an invite as a male, you’re sorely mistaken. There were still a large majority of males at the interview day, and they’re still looking for ~50% males in their intern class. <-- sorry to butt in here after the conversation has taken off, but I (OP) was at the interview day and there was not a "large majority of males". <- 50% males when 85% of applicants are male... < well classes have been 100% male there for the past four years (and many more before that) even though females represent 15-20%... so it’s not like females are always proportionately represented (at Emory or otherwise) | <- I just think everyone would do themselves well to be aware of and not ignore the statistics (on both sides). Female applicants certainly face many challenges entering a field that is predominately male. There is blatant sexism and frankly some programs that just do not want female residents. However, on the flip side, there are many many programs (mostly top tier programs) that make an enormous effort to increase their numbers of female residents. They proportionately interview more females than male (when compared to applicant statistics) and females are able to gain these interviews more easily. That doesn't mean that other challenges and biases do not persist, but more often than not, obtaining a good number of interviews is not one of them. < well said. Emory just happens to be one of those programs that previously discriminated against women, and the new chairman is trying to correct that with a swift move... kind of like trying to make a statement. <- And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Its necessary if the programs wants to overcome that reputation. But female applicants are best served by recognizing this fact and being aware of the increased liklihood of receiving an interview (specifically at Emory) over their male counterparts. | <- Just because females are getting these interviews doesn't mean we are not qualified. I have been shocked by the comments made by co-applicants toward females more than I have been shocked by program comments. I'd be curious to see what comments could be made after showing CVs +3 <- Everyone at an interview is qualified. But its pure statistics. If 15% of applicants are female, and 40-50% of the interviewees at the interviews of top 10 programs are females, then somethings gotta give statistically. Either females are far and away much more qualified in their scores and other attributes (the data doestn't suggest this) or there is an inherent value in being female that increases the liklihood of interview. Not that its a bad thing and isn't necessary. But it should be recognized. | <- well I for one think this blanket "recognition" assumes that some females wouldn't get a ton of interviews if they weren't female. What if by "recognizing" you are looking at minorities and and thinking to yourself "you wouldn't be here if it wasn't for your gender or race" < separate poster here, I agree that it's worth "recognizing"/acknowledging, but in the same vein, males should then be "recognizing" that they have a significant advantage at many programs.... and males applying in previous years should have been "recognizing" that THEY had a significant gender advantage at Emory. I doubt that males in prior years ranked Emory lower because they had a gender advantage/females weren't getting a fair shake.... so you better believe that as a female interviewee at Emory, I will not be ranking them lower just because of any potential gender preference < also where did you get 40-50%?? no way there were 40-50% females @ Emory interview day <-- separate poster. Was at interview day #2, at leastttt 50% female. Just setting the record straight. < interesting, didn’t seem like that on day #1 | absolutley not the case that males have had an advantage at emory in years past. Completely absurd accusation with nothing to back it up. Females have been placed highly on the rank list for many years, and circumstance has made the classes largely male for a while.
| ^ Continuation of above: | <- just for the record, emory has not been sexist in the past. their class proportions don't represent a desire to not have females but rather a self-fufilling prophecy. women don't want to be the only female in the program, so they don't select it < that's only partially true. I've heard that the prior chairman was fine with an all white, all male program <- then why are there minorities in their past classes? your point is negated by a quick look at their website < hah, still predominately while males bud <- well you said none bud, want to backtrack a little more? < never said "none", was essentially just trying to say that the prior chiarman did not care about seeking out diversity, not that they have 0% --> youre saying the prior chair didn't care about diversity and color of skin and instead chose based solely on performance with no regard to race and gender? oh man!!! what a travesty!! | < HAHAHAHA not what I was saying, nor the actual case, at all. Your ignorance is amazing --> oh yea im sure you know a whole lot about their prior rank lists! < what, and you do? < this idiot also seems to be suggesting that "choosing based solely on performance" resulted in an almost entirely white, male residency..... that's saying a lot about their view on life. Hope I don't match this this person. --> yea choosing on performance and then women choosing not to come. plenty of asian, indian, and african american. just women chose not to come...how can you know they didn't rank women? like who are you. i rotated there. there is plenty of diversity, and yes they only have one female, but i was told they had ranked many females highly in the past --> home student here, the prior chair is a liberal democrat. Your reasoning couldn't be further from the truth < apologies if I was off base; was just sharing what I heard during my rotation there | Your jealousy is showing bro +1 <- this sheet is getting harder to scroll thru +1 <-- it's also getting feisty! +1 < the main instigator is obviously someone that didn't get invited to interview and is butthurt. Probably time to shut this down. <boo for censorship, let them be a little salty < haha agreed, not suggesting we censor, just that maybe someone should indulge in a little self-preservation +1 | This is wild. 25 | I'm a female and was asked if I woodwork or work on cars, to which I politely replied, "No, those aren't hobbies of mine." To which this interviewer rudely snapped: "Well, then how do you have fine motor skills?" (That's a fair question). My reply: "Oh, actually I'm a classically-trained concert pianist for 16 years, so I think that has helped me develop fine motor skills." He then laughs snarkily, looks at the other interviewer for confirmation and goes, "Are you serious? You think THAT gives you fine motor skills?" A few questions later, he interrupted the other interviewer to ask me if "I'm strong enough to do orthopaedics." | < where the hell was this? <- HA! i had almost the same experience and line of questioning in a group interview setting (male) +1 <-- OP here, it was a Midwestern program <-- upper midwest or mid-midwest? <-- Chicago, lol +1 <-- any chance this program is on the west side? <-- yes! lol +1 <- sounds like loyola | <-- now i wonder if it was the same room at one of the programs there, which in hindsight might have been intentionally challenging <-- OP here, yeah now that others are mentioning it, I wonder if it was!
