Tailoring the College Search:  Helping Students Find their Best Fit

Fiske Guide to Colleges 2023

I really enjoyed the Super Match Tool in Naviance when our district still had Naviance. Now I use Big Futures college search/finding fit website to help students through determining criteria of schools. We go over each criteria more in depth and then I turn the students lose to try it on their own.

Facebook College Admissions page. I also use Niche and CollegeVine for search/filters.

I can connect with our registrar who keeps track of where students go to college after graduation to compile a list of interested alumni who would like to come talk to current students.
15
Big Future and SCOIR. Both provide a beginning platform for students to start the research process. I also have college representatives visit campus and encourage students to stop by to ask questions. I tell them that the representative does remember students and it can make the difference when applying. I also strongly recommend campus visits! I currently have an alumni wall with alumni advice on applying to college, which current students enjoy reading. I hadn't thought of having them visit though and will look into adding that resource to my future practice.

I do check/use/recommend FairTest, but it was a good reminder to not solely rely on them, but to always follow through with the specific school. Also, asking college reps is/was a good reminder.

Our district works heavily with College Board, so we work with sophomores and juniors with PSAT and SAT.

FAFSA for 2022-2023
25
Importance of using the ? buttons on the actual FAFSA site when you are confused. Make sure you use credible sites
26
Anytime I have a FAFSA question, I google it. There are so many resources out there to answer questions (mostly through the Student Aid website, but others too.) One thing recommended by a local college financial aid officer, was to have a paper copy of the FAFSA because many questions can be answered using that and using the FAQ included with the form.

I created a ‘student’ profile for a few scholarship sites, so I can see and receive the same information students do. It has been beneficial when recommending scholarship resources because I know what I am promoting. The one site I created a profile with is Unigo. They send a weekly or bi-monthly email to students with upcoming scholarships

The one resource that I use when working with students and dual credits, is the Transferability Guide on the college's website. Most students aren't familiar with that resource, so once I show them how it works, they can find out how each of the credits will transfer before they apply. In addition, I also show them how to find the IB information on the college website and how those scores will transfer over.
