Ojibwe Dialect Relationships: Part I. Monograph
Valentine, Jerry R.
Ontario: University of Western Ontario, 1994.
THE VAL 1994 c.1
This thesis presents a dialectological study of Ojibwe, a North American Indian language belonging to the Algonquian family. Of the thousand or so aboriginal languages of North America that existed at the time of contact with Europeans some five hundred years ago, Ojibwe is one of a handful that is still spoken as a mother-tongue by substantial number of speakers, though many dialects of Ovjibwe too face increasing obsolescence. Ojibwe is spoken in several distinct varieties over a wide area of central and western Canada, as well as in the United Staes in Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota and North Dakota. Among native American languages, Ojibwe is matched for geographic range and number of monolingual and bilingual speakers only by its sister Algonquian language, Cree, and Eskimo in its many varieties. Ojibwe today has a substantially wider geographic range than it did at the time on contact with Europeans largely because of the prominence if the Ojibwe in the westward expansion of the fur trade.

Village Journey: The Report of the Alaska Native Review Commission.
Berger, Thomas R.
New York: Hill and Wang, 1985
BER 1985 c.1, c.2
The Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act passed by Congress in 1971, hailed at the time as the most liberal settlement ever achieved with Native Americans, granted 44 million acres and nearly $1 billion in cash to a new entity - Native corporations. Today that settlement is bitterly resented by the Alaska Natives themselves. Thomas R. Berger, invited by the Inuit Circumpolar Conference to head the Alaska Native Review Commission, has traveled to sixty-two villages and towns, holding village meetings and listening to testimony from Eskimos, Indians, and Aleuts. His report, Village Journey, suggests changes in the law and public attitudes that will be required to reach a fair accommodation with the Alaska Natives and enable them to keep their land for themselves and for their descendants

Tribal Peoples and Development Issues: A Global Overview
Bodley, John H.
Mountain View: Mayfield Publishing Company, 1988.
BODL 1988 c.1
Today, although it is generally believed that large-scale development programs may harm native cultures, those concerned with tribals retain varying opinions on how best to contend with "progress." To provide an understanding of the impact of development, Professor Bodley offers a wide-ranging cross-section of case studies, policy positions, assessments, and recommendations, dating from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day. As in his earlier work, Victims of Progress, the author demonstrates that development has destroyed many tribal peoples, and he calls for a policy of self-determination to aid in their survival.
