EditorialPAX AustraliaYes207NoA text adventure is a hard sell among all the noise and flash of PAX, but Winter's Wake managed to draw players every day of the con.Taking off the headphones to hear hardware vendors shouting at people, you can see why someone wanted to stay in Winter's Wake for that soothing hour and a half.

How first-person text adventure Winter's Wake drew crowds at PAXPC GamerJody MacgregorInterviewPAX AustraliaYes1055YesYou see an article about a text adventure. It sounds interesting, and you consider reading more.Mostly though, what it's about is presence. While climbing a snowy mountain, meandering through a sun-dappled forest, or hanging out in a healer's hut, I felt like I was there in spite of the lack of graphics.

Jess ZammitEditorialPAX AustraliaNo234NoSurely the award for ‘most eye-catching sign at PAX Aus’ would have to go to this game. Its clever use of the language of classic text adventures set it apart from the rest and instantly had me wanting to know more – and there was so much more to know. Not only is A Winter’s Wake an exercise in nostalgia, it’s also breaking new ground by being a ‘first-person text adventure’, blending the mechanics of first person exploration games and text-based storytelling to create a truly unique experience. This is one that I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on, and that truly has to be experienced to be understood. Though there’s only a short demo available now, this is already a fantasy story that’s more than piqued my interest.

Hands on with Winter's Wake PreviewPowerUp!Steven HayesEditorialPAX AustraliaNo383YesCurrently still in development, Winter’s Wake was one of my favourite booths on the PAX Australia show floor this year. It stood out because it was clever in its presentation and representation. It was minimalist and intelligence in a sea of flashy and attention-grabbing gimmicks.

EditorialPAX AustraliaYes685NoThe demo is short, but the time spent in this world was charming and deep. This is in part due to the rambling nature of the imagination. I found that stumbling across a waterfall in the forest recalled images that made me feel calm and comforted, in a more profound way than any artist could render. [...] and that’s truly something special. In the Snowy Winter’s Wake was my first foray into text-based adventures since I last played Zork nearly a decade ago, but it really made an impact on me, and made me remember how much I appreciate the simplistic style of gaming.

In The Snowy Winter's Wake
Big Boss Battle (B3)
Toby RoundhillEditorialPAX AustraliaYes521YesWinter’s Wake’s booth at PAX was perhaps the greatest piece of advertising I have ever seen in my life. Everything, from the signage and business cards to even the dev’s shirt, was text-adventure-esque. Taking such a bold stance really worked well, and made quite an impression, as well as instilling into me a wish for a browser extension that turns the whole Internet into a text adventure. This background noise doesn’t sound like much at first, but it quickly brings the game to life and helps you understand where exactly you are, be it a secluded waterfall or bustling town square.Whilst you can use mouse control to look around the world, you do not see anything; rather, a short text description tells you what you are looking at. While this is extremely jarring at the start, I quickly got used to this new mechanic, which created a simple yet intriguing world, one which was broken down into a few chunks but had such richness and substance within.
