6/21/2020 16:20:51Sunny-Side UpOpener, ContestMany ostinato patterns throughout. Separate piccolo part. Rhythmic parts in nature. Lots of mixed articulations. Muted trumpet. Brass parts are interjected throughout. Comfortable ranges. Mixed articulations throughout. Rhyhtmic in nature. 7 percussion parts. Groove based percussion parts a minute into the song. Requires lots of rhythmic confidence and accuracy of rhythms. Staccato style. Very disjointed and choppy phrasing. Would require a lot of in independence from musicians and a lot of time spent learning other ensemble member's parts in the ensemble.

More challenging of a piece as an ensemble, rather than individually.

6/21/2020 16:22:02Sunny-Side UpNoveltySeconds in clarinet 2/3. Active saxophone parts. Staccato tonguing in woodwinds (very short) Third octave in flute and altissimo in clarinet Tied rhythms in brass. Solis in low brass. Sparse percussion taht highlights certain parts of the score
Dissonance. Has a great groove for a bit there. I think this would be pretty easy to put together once students got the hang of it. I just don't really care for this. I would like it if it focused more on the groove established in the beginning but I don't care for all these moments that we move away from that to become almost atonal. I think that would be hard for kids to conceptualize.

6/21/2020 16:22:04Sunny-Side UpCloser, NoveltyAlmost Graingeresque saxophone playing that interupts the texture. Technically difficult piccolo part. 3 clarinet parts.Dissonancess in trumpets can be difficult, much down with mutes so intonation will be an issue. 7 percussion parts, lots going on! Tricky mallet parts. Fun cowbell part!Syncopation and articulation are huge here. Offbeat entrances are tough but give it direction.9Bays, Kevin

6/21/2020 16:22:05Sunny-Side UpNoveltylots of independent entrance at beginning, rhythmically challenginglots of independent entrance at the beginning, muted trumpet, trombone gliss, percussion adds a type of novelty sound to the piece, lots of percussion parts, requires some independence in parts, great novelty type piece to program, syncopation a lot throughout 5Hillis, Aleesha

6/21/2020 16:22:05Sunny-Side UpOpenerShort solos in flutes, saxophones, clarinets.Mutes. Short and crisp attacks. Low brass play a background role most of the time.7 percussion parts. 3 mallet parts. Percussion is very prominent. Rhythms play off of one another. One section of melody played together, then another of filling in rhythms from other instruments. Concert Bb. Funky chords that rub on one another, great place to work on tuning odd chords. Short snippets of solos. Eighth-Sixteenth rhythms. Off-beat themes. Tempo changes are not too dramatic. Time changes.6Syman, Mara
17
6/21/2020 16:22:09Sunny-Side UpNoveltyMostly supportive.Parts have mostly the same rhythms in each section, and often the sections work together.Percussion drives the tempo a lot with cowbell.Almost sounds cartoonish. 3Bowles, Ashton

6/21/2020 16:22:21Sunny-Side UpNoveltyLots of staccato articulations to work on throughout. Oboe solo in the middle of the piece. Flutes get up pretty high in their register--> check for intonation issues. The brass continuously is practicing tension and release with cluster chords within each section so important to check for correct partials. The range for brass is manageable for the grade of this piece. Percussion gets some cool rhythmic groove using cabasa, cowbell, and tambourine. There are 7 percussion parts total. From the very opening, clear identification with independent entrances. Some quirky and dissonant sections. There are many syncopated entrances that don't seem to stay consistent, so checking for correct entrances will be important. 8Wright, Nicole

6/21/2020 16:22:22Sunny-Side UpNoveltyScalar passages throughout, Jazz feel and sound in saxes, flute part has difficulties, ostinato rhythm needs to be consistent when presentJazz Articulation and feel, low brass anchors the piece, high brass may get bright if not careful7-8 players needed with competence on multiple implements as they switch back and forthHas a jazzy/pep band feel at points, different kind of piece to play. Matching style across the ensemble is essential. The style drives the piece. The pulse moves around the ensemble, knowing who has it is important.7Bruington, Andrew

6/21/2020 16:22:22Sunny-Side UpNoveltyso fun. Lots of spurts of sound. So important to subdivide through all rests. cool tuba linelots of percussion parts - 7! so much energy in trumpet partswhat great program notes! So thoughtfully written with great creativity. 6/21/2020 16:22:26Sunny-Side UpChange of Pace, NoveltySome different runs not to difficult but counting will be important. AInteresting entrances, players must be counting and paying attention throughout. Articulation would be key to making this sound clean, otherwise it would sound very sloppy. 7 percussion parts and play a nice driving role throughout the piece. Good piece to work on counting and entrances. Independent parts. odd entrances throughout. I could imagine this one would be very difficult to get together and take some work and counting if done with a young ensemble. But good piece to work on those aspects. 2Fenske, John

6/21/2020 16:22:26Sunny-Side UpNoveltyNice grooving sax parts. Tpt melody throughout.Fun parts. Lots of grooving. Sounds like lots of use of aux perc.Nice groove. Fun piece.8Tamondong, Corey
27
6/21/2020 16:22:27Sunny-Side UpChange of Pace, NoveltyI hear the ww choir being used more as texture than much else. There are some solos but not fully exposed section parts. Flute and clarinet and oboe solos in here. Some ornamentation use like glissandos. The brass are pretty prominent in carrying the energy and drive of this piece. Not just the trumpets, either. Sounds like there is quite a bit of percussive sounds going on back there and they're pretty prominantThis piece is very rhythmic. There is definitely a melody but more so a groove and emphasize on rhythms. There are some interesting moments and chords with some dissonance. Definitely a piece to use in contrast with more lyrical things. 8Garvin, Katherine
28
6/21/2020 16:22:29Sunny-Side UpOpenerThis piece has a lot of ties and syncopation. It also features a lot of SPACE. Articulation and note style with your WW on the short entrances should be a strength in modeling to other section the note lengths needed for the quick rhythmic inserts.
There are times where this piece feels like it is more about color and cluster chords than melody. Then, there are moments of soaring jazzy trumpet lines. This will challenge your brass to think on their feet.
Percussion in this piece will get a work out navigating all of the auxiliary equipment. MORE COWBELL!!!!Overall, this piece is very confusing. At times, it reads like a Biedenbender piece with its angularity. Other times, it feels like a borderline jazz piece. It will take a mature ensemble with good reading and articulation chops to pull off correctly.7Gresham, Adam

6/21/2020 16:22:35Sunny-Side UpNoveltyFlutes play in the upper register Ab-ish. Some syncopations, but pretty easy ones.Trumpets call for st. mutes. Lots of unison rhythm playing within sections. Not much for ensemble playing together. Will need to work on confidence of entrances. Pretty active and big perc section looks like at least 7+ players. Need a rock solid cowbell player.Good practice notes in front of score. 5Kleindl, Kevin

There are extensive program notes about the several call-response storytelling sections in the different characters of this piece.
Its technically demanding style brings a lot of character to this piece.

6/21/2020 16:22:50Sunny-Side UpChange of Pace, NoveltyPlenty of exposed parts throughout the piece. A piccolo is desirable. Also, lots of exposed parts in sections. It sounds like mutes are needed, but that might just be the audio.Sus. trash cymbal?Cool groove. This seems like one of those pieces that an ensemble would take some time to "live with", but I bet the kids would love it after they really get it.9Benhart, Scott

6/21/2020 16:23:11Sunny-Side UpNoveltyWoodwinds have some 16th note patterns. Woodwinds switch between very rhythmic, short notes to lyrical playing at a moments notice. Good for matching style and working on chromatic notes. Catchy melodies with syncopation. Some glissandos in the trombones. Low brass has some exposed parts. Good for students to listen to each other and match style. 7 percussion parts. Latin percussion sound at times with cowbell, shaker, and cabasa. Lots of different types of percussion being used. Percussion sets the tone and I think students would like that. Good for working on subdividing and counting. Rhythm gets passed around group. Very rhythm with lyrical sounding parts thrown in. Lots of accidentals as well. Fun piece for students to play!8Cottom, Kristen

6/21/2020 16:23:14Sunny-Side UpOpener, Change of Pace, ContestGroovy saxophone part. Good unification of parts and sharing of ideas between sections. Easy to teach as a full ensemble. Appealing trombone part in Mes. 26. Composer describes it as "Sassy". Very groove based percussion parts. Very fun for your percussion section. Ostinato parts may cause low brass to lose their spot. Counting is essential Great piece for teaching call and response between sections. Wonderful piece for teaching syncopation. Composer sets up many solid percussion grooves for the band to play in front of. 6Mitchell, Jack

50
6/21/2020 16:23:19Sunny-Side UpChange of Pace, Closer, NoveltyRequires a piccolo player. Saxophone section needs to be well versed above the staff. Lots of unisons between the flute and oboe parts--hard to tune. Euphonium and trombone range gets up to a few ledger lines above the staff. Trumpet parts are quite accessible. It could be difficult to find mallets that create the appropriate articulation to match the ensemble. Has 7 percussion parts that switch around. Requires a suspended trash cymbal. As with typical with Markowski pieces, the parts are puzzle pieces and must be fit together properly in time and in tune. This could be a challenge. Lots of syncopation could be an issue. Also odd entrances. Rhythms are pretty standard and straight forward (not strangely notated or on 16ths).8Lubbers, Jacob

6/21/2020 16:23:40Sunny-Side UpChange of PaceOpens up with some m2 intervals in the WW. Make sure the instruments involved hear and maintain the proper interval intonation.Several times throughout the piece there are brass accented syncopated entrances. It is important for the students to have a solid subdivision pulsing through.Aux Perc. have a nice groove. Help the band to be aware and anchor their internal pulse with the percussion drive.Tricky entrances for the ensemble as they strive to keep their independence. You band will need to be especially counting and confident with their separate entrances.9Hurst, Joshua
53
6/21/2020 16:23:41Sunny-Side UpContest, Closer, NoveltyLots of doubling between flutes/clarinets - important to match articulation styles. Horns- some syncopated ryhthms and more extended range (up to G) in some areas. Lots of M2's and m2's in the split trumpet parts written more for effect Multiple parts with splits. Some extended technique- e.g.in perc. 5 around the mm. 127 area. Percussion many times supports and locks in with the winds melody Very much a 'tone poem'-esque piece that is meant to (sort of) tell a story of waking up with different themes- important to have 5Weinstein, Jacob
54
6/21/2020 16:23:43Sunny-Side UpCloser, NoveltySimilar to brass, there are a lot of "woodwind section" parts in this piece. Clarinets break from this with a pulsed 8th note pattern for a lot of the music.Ranges are pretty expansive, Lots of "brass section" playing in built chords - tuning short marcato chords!
Again a robust percussion section, a lot of auxiliary instruments. For the most part, section is engaged throughout the entire piece across all parts. Lots of attitude and character from this piece. Some polyrhythm interaction in the "groove" of the piece.
Lots of syncopations and "random" entrances for sting notes from various sections at different times. Counting and listening is key.5Wallace, Garrett
55
6/21/2020 16:23:47Sunny-Side UpContestReally high flute parts throughout, watch for pitch issues. Clarinets have lots of throat tones as well.Powerful brass sections! Make sure brass are strong but not splatty. Watch for balance of chords.Great use of various percussion instruments. Need a strong mallet player for this piece.A piece with jazz elements. Careful attention to style and accidentals needs to be taken. 8Loomis, Benjamin
56
6/21/2020 16:23:55Sunny-Side UpNovelty
The saxophone groove one minute in expands into woodwind grooves throughout. This will be fun for students to learn and great lessons in syncopation. Teaching style will be a major focus for the woodwinds and a refreshing experience for the students.
There are many syncopated rhythms that the brass will need help working through if your band is young. I hear lots of cow bell. More of the bass drum and melodic percussion will benefit the ensemble. There are many rhythmic challenges in this piece. The students will need help reading the rhythms. 5Rodriguez, Jose

6/21/2020 16:24:47Sunny-Side UpNoveltyReally high range in the bassoon part, doubled with 1st clarinet part in the beginning. A lot of accidentals and sixteenth note runs! Passes the melody around to several different brass sections, be careful of range in the euphonium part. A lot of different auxiliary percussion equipment used: crotales, tam tam, temple blocks, wood block, sleigh bells. Great opportunity to teach a lot of varied articulations and mixed meter changes. 5Chambless, Michael
59
6/21/2020 16:25:10Sunny-Side UpContestThere is a piccolo part. The woodwinds especially have a lot of accidentals. Trumpets need straight mutes. 7 percussionists are neededMichael Markowski gives a lot of notes and considerations at the beginning of the score that would be helpful to study before teaching this piece. A lot of contrast is needed between piano and fortissimo. The melody is often traded between several instruments. 8DiMento, Jenna

61
6/21/2020 16:26:42Sunny-Side UpNoveltyPiccolo part - flute part is in the upper range of the instrument. Woodwinds have a lot of notes that are all independent of each other and aren't too hard. Trumpet straight mute needed, brass parts aren't too difficult but do require attention to the details. Almost every note has an instruction of some kind. Percussion gets to use a lot of toys! Some double noted mallet parts and not a very active snare part. This is piece has independent parts and will need the players to count and be confident while playing. This is a fun piece that the kids will enjoy playing. 6Mack, Regan
62
6/21/2020 16:32:43Sunny-Side UpNoveltyRepeated staccato articulation, make sure to work on articulation exercises to improve woodwind tongue speed. Flute and clarinet ranges are high. Trumpets need straight mutes, euphonium range is high, Shaker and cowbell needed in the auxiliary percussion, mallet percussion doubles with flute frequently. Several meter changes, great opportunity to teach a variety of articulations. 5Chambless, Michael
