Notes:
55
1) The figure for Spectator sales (column H) is ABC ‘actively purchased’: ie, copies bought by readers, world over (including our Australia edition). It is smaller than the total ABC headline figure which counts other forms of circulation (bulk sales, free copies and, from 2015 H2, double-counted print-and-digital bundles).
56
2) All magazine data is drawn from published ABC certificates (originals found by clicking on relevant date). The exception is digital-only sales from 2012-15 H1: they are internal figures, as they were not included in ABC certificates until 2015. The figures for digital sales in 2012-15 (F27:G36) are internal ones from The Spectator. The 2019 Q3 numbers are also internal:ABC does not audit quarterly 2)data.
57
3) In 2015, ABC started to count a standard print-and-digital subscription as two subscriptions. This created what ABC certificates referred to as a ‘gross’ figure. This resulted in a far-larger headline figure for magazines, but The Spectator never used this it: we have only ever quoted actual (ie, column h) using components of ABC data. We asked ABC to stop calculating this figure for The Spectator as of H1 2019.

4) ‘ABC Headline’ refers to the figure given at the top of ABC-audited certificates. This includes frees, bulk orders (for airlines, etc). The Spectator's preferred metric of 'sales' refers to
