All the while, Sal is keeping her grandparents entertained by telling them stories that have happened at home. Sal and her father have recently moved to a new city after her mother's sudden leaving and her not returning. In this new city, Sal dreams that her mother will return one day out of the blue, but when her new friend Phoebe's mother suddenly disappears, Sal starts seeing the same thing happening to her friend. Phoebe is convinced that her mother has been murdered by their crazy neighbor, who happens to be good friends with Sal's father. Phoebe's family begins receiving suspicious notes, and Phoebe is convinced they are directly related to her mother's disappearance. Sal and Phoebe devise a plan to figure out where Phoebe's mother has gone, and in the end, there are many surprises that are revealed, and Sal learns a lot from Phoebe's experiences, from sharing the stories and from understanding what it means to walk in someone's moccasins. Text-to-self: Students can use this book and relate it to experiences they may have had with people in their own lives that they do not like or experiences with grief. There are many ways students should be able to relate this book to different experiences they personally have had. RF

There is a dog within the store, and Opal insists that it is hers. She not only wants a dog but wants to help take care of this one because you can tell it’s in bad shape. She is also very lonely because she and her daddy, the Preacher, are new in town, so she doesn't have any friends yet, but Opal also doesn't have a mama, and she feels empty without her. She convinces her daddy to let Winn-Dixie stay and live with them. With the help of Winn-Dixie, Opal soon makes many friends. Opal and Gloria, one of her new friends, decide to have a party and invite all of their friends to it. When a thunderstorm ruins the party, and Winn-Dixie runs away because of his pathological fear of thunderstorms, Opal gets upset and runs off to find him. When she and the Preacher come up empty-handed, they head back to Gloria’s house, where Winn-Dixie and their party are waiting for them. It would also be great to relate it to books about friendships and compare and contrast different friendships.RF
