Brief description of the organization's mission and goals (recommended number of words 300):The George Eliava Institute of Bacteriophages, Microbiology and Virology is world known institution in the field of phage research and applied microbiology. The research is being conducted in medical, veterinary and food microbiology, environmental research, different aspects of infectious immunology and virology, biodefence etc. The main research activity of the institute is focused on isolation and selection of effective bacteriophages against bacterial pathogens of human, animals and plants. Throughout almost 100 years’ history, the institute directed its activities towards development of biological preparations, their improvement and practical application for therapy, prophylaxis and diagnostics of infectious diseases, including those that are caused by antibiotic-resistant bacterial pathogens. Over the years, several effective therapeutic phage preparations for human and animal health have been developed in scientific laboratories of the Eliava Institute. Experienced scientists together with young generation of researchers work on isolation, selection and detailed study of bacterial viruses (bacteriophages). The Institute actively participates in the different grant competitions announced by national and international levels. The researchers provide training courses, including summer schools to the students and scientists from local as well as international high education and scientific institutions and Universities. The Institute has a close collaboration with the scientists and medical doctors from different countries; together with the partners, the Eliava scientists are working on joint research developments and projects, publishing results in scientific journals and periodicals. The Institute has renovated laboratory facility and all needed equipment and infrastructure for research and scientific activity. The main goal of the Eliava Institute is to continue its substantial traditions of research and developments in Microbiology and Bacteriology, in bacteriophage study and application; support human and animal health, environmental protection with ecologically safe phage application.The Eliava Institute is strongly supportive of gender equality and is fully compliant with all national and international regulations in this regard. With respect to the institute’s entire staff (technical support professionals and administration), 75 percent of all personnel are female. With respect to scientific professionals, 35 of the institute’s 38 scientists are female. The Institute’s director and the heads of the 6 laboratories are female.
