Instructors are often caught in the middle and even if they wanted to make the switch to OER, they often don't have the bandwidth to create/administer/grade homework, quizzes, and exams outside of whatever online platform the textbook bundle comes with, which automates these functions. Finding a way to create these supplemental materials/platforms for OERs (or if they exist increasing awareness!!) and streamlining as much of the backend work for instructors to make the transition as seamless as possible is crucial. We have also heard of reluctance from our university's administration to make any OER commitments that could jeopardize revenue that the university receives as a cut of the bookstore's textbook adoptions. I have started a "Textbook Project" where we are exploring the ideas around textbook affordability--hopefully this will eventually lead us to OER as a solution, but it is going to take a long time to get us there.
