We need some way to address the ancillary support traditional textbooks provide to overworked TAs/instructors. Instructors are often caught in the middle and even if they wanted to make the switch to OER, they often don't have the bandwidth to create/administer/grade homework, quizzes, and exams outside of whatever online platform the textbook bundle comes with, which automates these functions. Finding a way to create these supplemental materials/platforms for OERs (or if they exist increasing awareness!!) and streamlining as much of the backend work for instructors to make the transition as seamless as possible is crucial.

We have also heard of reluctance from our university's administration to make any OER commitments that could jeopardize revenue that the university receives as a cut of the bookstore's textbook adoptions. I am not sure how we can address this, or if it's in SPARC's purview, but I think this is a significant consideration and barrier to widespread support from the upper levels.

i also think grassroots pressure from students to move to OERs could be very effective--would love to see marketing materials directed at students!

We are a very small liberal arts college and I am the only person working to raise awareness of OER and encourage OER adoption on campus on top of all of my other duties as a librarian. We are a library with two librarians and one support staff so I do not have much time or support in this regard.

The only reasons I rated two of the benefits above as "disagree" is due to lack of faculty time (we are all stretched pretty thin at the college due to recent layoffs) and the lack of time on my part in getting regular education/workshops set up.

Students can keep the material long term. With electronic materials, and things are going electronic, if you don't own it, you can't preserve it. Platforms are going to be decommissioned. Owning a file and the rights to to the file is the only way to be able to keep it into the future for later reference.

My director has watched several webinars of all that it takes to successfully run an OER implementation--she feels like we do not have the staff or capacity to successfully run such an initiative. She also feels like it is not the library's responsibility to push such an initiative. I have started a "Textbook Project" where we are exploring the ideas around textbook affordability--hopefully this will eventually lead us to OER as a solution, but it is going to take a long time to get us there.
Most of our faculty do not use traditional textbooks, this means that the traditional OERs are not really going to help faculty here.

As a university that focuses more on teaching than research, we don't have as much of a culture around publishing tied to tenure. This trickles down to affect things like encouraging faculty to create or customize OER.
