Falling LightsStaff, Students, Contractors, VisitorsCables are to be taped down using Gaffer Tape, or covered with cable protectors.                       Chairs and tables are to be moved to the side of the room or stored if not needed.         Emergency Exit routes are kept clear at all times, with the exception of a taped / covered cable.                                                                                                                                            Due to the topography of the room changing regularly, upon entering the theatre, all people must take a moment to do their own dynamic risk assessment to assess what route is best to take for themselves. Fire exit routes must be kept clear at all times.1440

Sessions are planned, instructions and guide lines are given. Groups are monitored.1220

Objects behind curtainsStaff, Students, Contractors, VisitorsBefore going behind a curtain first assess what is behind the curtain by looking (if possible) behind the curtain and looking between the wall and curtain for an obstruction, if not possible to look behind, gently push the curtain toward the nearest wall and feel for an obstruction. If obstruction needs to be cleared move the curtain to expose the obstruction, then move the object(s). When moving an obstruction, make sure that the route you take is clear from further obstructions and well lit. If necessary, make it a two-man task. Where possible, provide adaquate lighting behind the curtains to allow visable access2120

Storage of cables and equipmentStaff, Students, Contractors, VisitorsShelves and a flight case are available for storage of most equipment and cables. For larger items that cannot fit in the flight case or shelves are permitted to be stored on the floor without blocking any walkway (i.e. under the stairs) Ensure that each item is safely stowed in its location, if that is not possible safely restrain it with rope and / or ratchet straps. Electrical flex - Electrical cables are not to be wound up when in use. Electrical copper sheathing is to be protected and not bent back on itself.1220

Ingress/Egress - trips - fallsStaff, Students, Contractors, VisitorsFor visitors attending a performance a front of house team will help audience members with any questions and help them to their seats and point out any hazards En route to their seat using communications (torches used if necessary). For staff and students although familiar with the space they will still be treated as a visitor as the theatre will be laid out differently. If the Performance / Event starts in a blackout, the front of house team needs to be satisfied that audience is safely seated before giving the signal to go to blackout.1220

Use of effects - strobe lighting caused epileptic fitsStaff, Students, Contractors, VisitorsThere will be a sign on the door informing / warning everyone that strobe lighting effect is in use. Also, organisers will communicate as much as possible with people who purchase tickets in advance about epilepsy warnings. If a seizure does occur, then Reception is a first point of call on which the tech team can call for help including an ambulance if required. Try and create a calm atmosphere by asking by-standers to leave the theatre. Make the area around the casualty free from objects that may cause harm and notify reception immediately to arrange immediate first aid and provide an emergency escape route as well as safe words for the cast and crew to follow. Emergency lighting should be provided. 2240

Use of effects - smoke/haze machines -triggering fire alarm Staff, Students, Contractors, VisitorsBefore use of the Mist maker, smoke machine or any hazer or pyrotechnics, request that the smoke detectors are turned off for the theatre and fill out the relevant form. A responsable adult is to remain in the theatre during the time the detectors are off in case of a fire. Immediately after use inform reception to turn the detectors back on.1110

Use of effects - Smoke/haze machines - respiratory issues - reduced visionStaff, Students, Contractors, VisitorsThere is to be a warning on the door about the machines being in use during a performance and rehearsal. The machines have an auto cut-off, and then cannot be turned on again until an allotted time has passed. If someone does get into difficulty, ask that person to get some air with assistance (if wanted / needed) and have a conversation with that person on how best to continue with the activity. We ask that the audience remain in the specified area throughout the performance and if they do need assistance a member of our front of house team will be available to assist. During the rehearsal process, rehearse with the smoke / haze machine, to get comfortable and used to performing with it on and solve any unforeseen issues that may occur and to find the right balance appropriate for the show / performance. Before opening fire doors, ensure any alarms are off and reception is notified. when performance is done, make sure the alarms are turned on and working as normal. To help clear the smoke/haze after a performance / rehearsal, ask reception to turn off alarm for the theatre fire exit doors and open the door and curtains around it to ventilate the area.1220

Staging and Railings0

Manoeuvring, Raising and Lowering Staging Staff, Students, Contractors, VisitorsFollow the instructional sticker on each piece of staging. If in doubt, ask someone for advice. The area where the staging is going to occupy and the surrounding area is first to be cleared of all obstructions. A minimum of two people are needed to unfold and fold the staging. Each half should be un-folded and folded one at a time as one side is lowered or raised the second person is supporting the staging. When lowering and raising a half of staging the supporting person is to bend at the knee. When raising or lowering the staging's centre of gravity changes suddenly, so the staging can move in an unexpected direction. This cannot be helped but all people involved need to be aware and expect the unexpected. When putting staging together, check that the yellow bar around one set of wheels are facing the same direction, so the staging can interlock with each other. When the staging is lowered and needs to be manoeuvred, each side is to be lifted slightly as this reduces the amount of dragging needed. 2480

Rigging/Focusing Lanterns using Genie lift0

Using the Genie Lift in B001 (Theatre) Crushing, Falling, knocksStaff, Students, Contractors, VisitorsOnly persons with an IPAF 3A license may operate the Genie lift. Before use, a visual inspection of the lift needs to be carried out, to check for any potential faults / issues. Defects must be reported to Estates on Top desk immediately and the Genie put out of action until fully repaired. The operator is to be constantly aware of surroundings and check that the planned route is clear from any obstacles for the lift, and remove them (if possible) or plan a new route Hard hats are to be worn by people working on and near the Genie lift whilst rigging. Anybody else in the room is to be at a safe distance away from the lift. It is at the discretion of the operator on how many people are in the room and who is allowed and not allowed in the room at the time to minimise disrupting influences. When in the basket, there is to be no climbing on the supports rails at any time, or climbing out onto another structure. When the lift is extended upwards, no-one is to place their hands or any object into the lifting mechanisms at any time. If an object was to obstruct the lifting mechanism DO NOT attempt to remove it, instead seek a member of Estates or the H&S team to assist and support further. The person operating the Genie lift remains in charge and leads the task being carried out. Only students that the operator trusts are allowed in the theatre when the Genie lift is in use and the operator can tell people to leave if the operator feels that they are a potential risk to themselves or others. 1550

Lifting and Rigging a LanternStaff, Students, Contractors, VisitorsThe rigger is to be confident that they can lift a light safely from the knees, whether it be in the rig or on a portable T-bar to avoid any potential muscle injury, or dropping it onto feet. Steel toecaps to be worn. A second person is to be on standby in case the rigger gets into difficulty. if a student is rigging a light a Theatre technician is to supervise. Visually check each G-clamp and safety chain before rigging, to check if they are fit for use. 25100

BurnsStaff, Students, Contractors, VisitorsWhilst focusing lanterns which are turned on, the intensity of the lamp is to be as low as possible whilst adjusting the beam to avoid getting the lamp too hot, too quick. Heat resistance gloves are to be worn. Give a lamp sufficient time to cool down before touching.2480

Electric ShocksStaff, Students, Contractors, VisitorsThe socket, cable, and plug should be visually checked before each use and PAT testing is conducted regularly. If any of the components look damaged or have exposed wiring DO NOT USE THAT ITEM and set it aside. Mark it up appropriately. The theatre technician will then assess to see if that item can be repaired or dispose of appropriately. If the item is repaired, that item needs to be PAT tested before being used again. 2480

Powering on the PA SystemStaff, Students, Visitors, ContractorsAny persons who want to use the system must first be familiar with how a PA system works, any persons who have no or very little experience must be supervised by a theatre technician or staff from the Music Department courses. Before turning any equipment on check that the amplifiers are turned OFF. If they are on turn them OFF now. Not doing this may result in loud popping noises that can both damage speakers and can cause ringing in peoples ears. After all the equipment that needs to be used for that session is turned on i.e. Microphones, Speakers and Sound desk then it is safe to turn on the amplifiers. There are notices around the sound desk area to make people aware of the correct procedure. Sound should not exceed 107dbs.2120

Powering off the PA SystemStaff, Students, Visitors, ContractorsAny persons who want to use the system must first be familiar with how a PA system works, any persons who have no or very little experience must be supervised by a theatre technician or staff from the Music department courses. The amplifiers must be turned off first, before any other equipment i.e. Microphones, Speakers and Sound desk, failure to do this may result in loud popping noises that can both damage speakers and can cause ringing in peoples ears. After the amplifiers are turned off, then it is safe to turn off the rest of the equipment. There are notices around the sound desk area to make people aware of the correct procedure.2120

Using and moving the FENTON portable speakerStaff, Students, Visitors, ContractorsThis speaker is for the use of all within the theatre. The Manual is kept for reference purposes in or on the computer desk situated by the main theatre door. This speaker has built in wheels and a handle; before moving ensure that the handle is fully extended before attempting to push/pull the speaker on its wheels. When the speaker is stationary ensure that it is on a flat stable surface. If you need to lift the speaker, first check that your intended route is clear from obstacles, then use the inbuilt handles on the side and lift by bending from the knees and holding it as close to your core as possible. When not in use or not charging the battery, turn off the power first on the speaker then from the socket. If the socket has no on/off switch, unplug the device from the wall to prevent the in-built battery from over charging. All the controls are clearly marked on the speaker: i.e. Input, Power and Volume2240

Hearing Damage - PA SystemStaff, Students, Visitors, ContractorsBefore any sound is played through the system, first set the volume on the master fader to zero which is labelled alongside the fader. Set each input fader to ∞ (infinity) when the fader is fully down, then while playing the sound or talking into a microphone raise the volume of the input up to where it is at a comfortable level. This is to be done for each input being used. On the desk is a series of coloured LED's (Green, Orange and Red). Test each input against the LED array. If it is in the Green colour, the volume is acceptable. If it enters the Orange ranges be prepared for it to be louder than normal and if it enters the Red zone turn the volume down immediately. The maximum allowable level is to be around the top of the Green and first Orange LED. Any higher and it may cause ringing in the ears, and may be uncomfortable to listen to. The desk is to be manned throughout the use to manage any spikes in volume to then counter that spike by making an adjustment. Before each performance a sound check is to be carried out to check that the equipment and volumes are correct and working as expected. Limit the exposure to loud volumes as much as possible.2480

Hearing Damage - FENTON SpeakerStaff, Students, Visitors, ContractorsBefore playing any sound through the speaker, turn the volume control to zero. With the sound playing, slowly turn the volume control up to a comfortable level. Do not sit or stand next to the speaker when it is in use. If the volume is either too loud or uncomfortable to listen to, either make the distance between yourself and the speaker greater and/or turn the volume down. Consider other people in the location too. Limit the exposure to loud volumes as much as possible.2480

Staff, studentsStudents receive training on correct use of all equipment using manufacturers guidelines and health and safety guidelines before use.
Technician completes a check of the equipment before handing it to students and checks it again on return.                                                                                                                        Technician checks all equipment once a week.                                                       Pre-use checks are carried out by students every time they use equipment. Students remove all dangling jewellery, scarves etc. and tie back long hair before use of equipment to eliminate the likelihood of entanglement.
Equipment is PAT tested routinely as per GC Procedures.
Machines are switched off and unplugged at the end of each session.
Irons are switched off when not in use and allowed to cool in a safe place before they are stowed away.
All wiring and plugs are checked to ensure they are intact before plugging into mains outlet.
Staff are notified of any faults/breakages immediately.
Faulty equipment is removed from service and stored away separately until repairs have been carried out.
Estates are notified of the defective equipment using Top Desk, logging the Serial Code and Asset number                                                                                                                        Cables are not obscured, hidden or left in walkways and areas where they are likely to constitute a tripping hazard.

Students
patch tests to be conducted at least 24 hours before full application. A small amount is applied to the back of hand and ear to test for potential reactions. If reaction occurs, stop use and wash with warm water immediately. Use hypoallergenic makeup and latex where possible and use reputable brands. when using Glowsticks, ensure they are securely placed and undamaged. If they are damaged, dispose of them immediatly.

ensure any props that are used around an actors neck are loose and have a quick release. Any props that are used and interacted with by the audience, need to be undamaged, sturdy, light and safe for handeling by all. All set needs to be secured and checked before each performance and all costumes must be stored securely, looked after and 'slip-free'.

ensure each member of the team is looked after by everyone else. 'check-ins' should be conducted often to make sure pressure, stress and anxiety is kept as low as possible and morale is kept up. In cases where stress and pressue is high, utilise other cast members and spread out responsabilities evenly so that everyone is taking care of each other.
