6/21/2020 16:13:39Hypnotic MemoriesChange of Pace, ContestA lot of isolated solos (including double reeds) in the opening few measures. Double reed ostinatos open the first melody. Clarinet solo in the piece has some rather large intervals throughout.
Some moments in the piece really test the high range of the some of the brass instruments, specifically the horn. Competent horn section will definitely be necessary with the amount of isolated, fanfare-esque solo moments in their parts.
Some expanded instrumentation moments, and a lot of tempo changes where the percussion is rather present through the transition.Great piece to introduce mixed meter to students in a repetitive style. The B section in the middle gives a great opportunity to work on a varying style.8Skiba, Matthew

6/21/2020 16:13:46Hypnotic MemoriesOpener, CloserFlute solo, oboe solo, certainly some technical bits. Some rangey stuff around 135, but overall fairly achievable. Some tricky mallet parts, they play the motif a lot along with the rest of the band7/8 meter, syncopated rhythms against long lyrical moments. Love the texture changesHard to hear - but sounds like having experienced mallet players will be needed for solis with upper woodwindsThis piece is really interesting. It has a lot of energy and interesting chords - plus solo opportunities. Great tune. 4+ 10Currey, Elizabeth

6/21/2020 16:14:07Hypnotic MemoriesCloserNice clarinet feature in the middle. There are some high range considerations in the flutes.Rhythmically repetitive driving parts for the brass in the beginning and end, good way to teach 7/8 and ingrain the feel. Trumpets have some nice melodies.Tricky tambourine part, should be played on the knee or a stand. This is a fun 7/8 piece! Would be a good teaching tool to introduce 7/8 without throwing in too many other challenges.9Dysart, Benjamin

6/21/2020 16:14:11Hypnotic MemoriesContest, CloserGreat woodwind ostinatto. Great clarinet solo in the middle. Great flute solo in the middle. Some tricky accented lines toward the end.Muted trumpet. Low brass play the hits of the 7/8 measure. Needs strong horns for loud melody towards the end.Mallet parts lead the groove.Starts in 7/4. There is a lot of 7/8 - but uses a lot of ostinato patterns making more manageable. Great slow section in the middle for working on balance/blend.8Forman, Toby

6/21/2020 16:14:19Hypnotic MemoriesChange of Pace, Solo/Soli FeatureFlute solo followed by oboe, then bassoon. Woodwind ostinato in 7/8 would be fun for teaching compound meter. Brass leads the melody, lots of great voicings. Macro melodic lines, great for ensemble teaching. If you have a kid you don't like put them on shaker. More percussion as the piece moves along. Great piece for compound meter and highlighting an array of soloists. Overall you would need strong players in every section with how much the melody is passed around and how many solo voices there are. Reminds me of Avengers.9Dix, Darren

6/21/2020 16:14:19Hypnotic MemoriesContest
Picc, two oboe parts, two bassoon parts, three clarinet parts. Some WW parts play a lot of repeating, ostinato patterns; it could possibly get a little boring for them. Beautiful, chorale first in the WWs then passed along to the brass in the middle.
Three trumpet parts, four horn parts, three trombone parts. Some powerful, fanfare-like figures in the brass while the woodwinds play an ostinatoBasic percussion instrumentation, must have someone who can play killer 16th notes on the shakerStarts slow and lyrical, changes to a really cool groove in 7/8. Very intriguing piece; even the slow section in the middle presents different solo opportunities and timbres. Some modulations to different keys occurs, but he doesn't change key signature.10Poss, Rachel

6/21/2020 16:14:21Hypnotic MemoriesOpener, ContestFlute and oboe solos at the beginning. Clarinets have an accented part at the beginning that would probably require some staggering. The 7/4 switches the accents toward the end8Sherwin, Robert

Some dense/delicate parts with lots of notes, easy to be out of time or overplay. Shaker player is earning his paycheck.7/8 time. Rhythmic ostinati over 7/8 chorale. A lot of using simultaneous textures. Lush chorale under ostinati. Lots of variation within the 2+2+3 context. Accel near end leads into new finishing material.7Paradis, Jeff

6/21/2020 16:14:39Hypnotic MemoriesCloserThere are quite a lot of solos! Low long flutes will have a hard time being heard. There is double tonguing in the flutes. If this hasnt been done before, it may be confusing. Woodwinds have some challenging sequences at 127Mutes require intonation work. A lot of repetivie mid-upper range playing. This can be fatiguing.Percussion is very involved in the time of the 7/8. It is in 7/8, which comes with its own defficulties! 6/21/2020 16:14:53Hypnotic MemoriesOpener, Contest, CloserVery stacotto in style and will require diligent oboist.
Very repetitive at the beginning for our upper woodwinds.
There are some upper range unison passages in here for our mid to low horns. constant subdivisions and endurance is needed for at least one percussionist who will be playing 16ths until the cows come home. This is a repetitive piece in parts but is a great piece to get students introduce to some less normal time signatures. 10Johnson, Johnathan

50
6/21/2020 16:15:05Hypnotic MemoriesOpener, Contest, CloserSolo themes passed around from flute to oboe to bassoon. Lots of repeated articulated patterns may become taxing. Very exposed oboes solo in the andante section is a consideration to have when programming. Some good moments of exposure for horns and trumpets in the first 7/8 section. Range is very high and in unison with trumpets. Not as technically demanding, but the range will push the students.
Shaker part in the beginning of the 7/8 is demanding because of its relationship to the subdivision and length of the part. Definitely will need something like egg shakers there. Plenty of accessory instruments to create color and keep multiple students engaged.
There is great energy in the first theme that develops from 7/4 to 7/8. The articulation patterns (and leaps within them) may be taxing on performers and require steady air and relaxed embouchures. When coming out of the lush andante section, the way the theme is manipulated over time to fit underneath the return to the melodic material from the beginning is creative and interesting!

6/21/2020 16:15:18Hypnotic MemoriesCloserStrengths: Well written for the instruments
Difficulties: Oboe legato 16ths on an F5 as a solo alongside the flute,
Strengths: Gives horns a chance to play "blisteringly"
Difficulties: Tuba part divides
Strengths: Marimba part is written in the grand staff
Difficulties: The shaker player will need considerable endurance to play this and if they are off, the band will fall apart
Strengths: Good for teaching a 7/8 groove
Difficulties: Articulation differences between the WW and the brass (m. 29)

Will need a shaker player with some strength to perform straight sixteenths without pause. Could prove to be challenging.7/8 time may be difficult if the ensemble is new to this time signature. 6/21/2020 16:17:07Hypnotic MemoriesContest, CloserClarinets, altos, and oboes will need to stagger breathe for the rhythmic ostinato in the beginning. Beautiful clarinet solo at measure 69. Exposed oboe solo. Bassoon plays at G above bass clef. Moderate range for trumpet up to F-sharp in the top line of the staff. Horns play a lot in the upper register. Lots of technical mallet parts. Ensemble will need to be comfortable playing in 7/8 at a fast and slow tempo. 10Paim, Marco
