8 | 7/25/2011 16:55:30 | Influence Machines | Influence Machines, 2011. Materials: Acrylic, aluminum, dielectric materials. An electrostatic generator, or electrostatic machine, is a mechanical device that produces static electricity, or electricity at high voltage and low continuous current. Electrostatic generators operate by using manual (or other) power to transform mechanical work into electric energy. They develop electrostatic charges of opposite signs rendered to two conductors, using only electric forces. They work by using moving plates, drums, or belts to carry electric charge to a high potential electrode. In this case he charge is generated electrostatic induction. This exhibit allows visitors to interact with the machines and dielectric materials in the installation creating unique movement and sparks! | http://ulfeldt.mosaicglobe.com/page/17445 | http://alu-photo.smugmug.com/Other/current-work/18218214_ZFj56x#1400499489_8m8RRLP | Arts, Science | Anja | Ulfeldt | anja@ulfeldt.com | 1027 3rd Street | Oakland | CA | 94607 | I DO NOT intend to sell merchandise at East Bay MIni Maker Faire 2011. | Standard booth space (10'x8' space), will bring my own table and chairs. | This is an interactive art piece. 22 | 8/11/2011 17:34:41 | Pulsewave SF | Chipmusic is the art of utilizing otherwise obsolete computer hardware such as video game consoles and home computing systems to make stunning music and visual works in a wide variety of styles. Chip musicians repair, modify and reprogram this equipment, taking it far beyond it's intended purpose and design specs to bring new life to devices that would otherwise stuff our landfills. Come by the Pulsewave SF booth at the East Bay Mini Maker Faire to get hands on experience with the hardware and software that makes Chip Music tick, tock, bleep and bloop. Meet local Chip artists in the flesh to see how they work and participate in demonstrations of common modifications done to Nintendo Gameboys (and possibly other hardware). Pulsewave SF is the West Coast sister of New York's longest running Chip Music event Pulsewave, showcasing fantastic local acts, drawing international talent to the SF Bay Area, and spreading the gospel of Chip Music to the greater public. Resident artists include Crashfaster, Starpause, The Glowing Stars, Doctor Popular and more. | http://www.pulsewavesf.com | http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2103/5752586586_43738156b9_o.jpg | Arts, Engineering | Matt | Payne | Pulsewave SF | pulsewavesf | matthewjosophpayne@gmail.com | Oakland | CA | 94619 | I DO NOT intend to sell merchandise at East Bay MIni Maker Faire 2011. | Standard booth space (10'x8' space), will bring my own table and chairs., Activity area (hands-on activitiies for attendees), Non-standard set-up | Sorry if a bunch of the options I've picked above seem to be contradictory or confusing - the fact is, we have a lot to offer and can expand or shrink to meet demands. Possible elements: 1. A hands-on music making table, offering chances to make music and visuals with modified (and unmodified) old school computing and video game hardware. We can provide our own small projector for this. 2. A second table with potentially hands-on demonstrations of modifications to be done to such hardware (adding backlights, installing specialized sound outputs, etc - soldering is involved) - there is a possible "sales" element to this, wherein we could offer parts and potentially consoles - but as it wouldn't be particularly "commercial", I'm not sure how this works with the $100 fee. 3. Presentations - a number of us are prepared to give presentations on various subjects, including the effects of limitations in chiptune hardware on creativity, demonstrations of basic hardware modifications, the history of chiptune as a genre, and possibly other things. It would be fantastic to have a projector (and for hardware demos, a document camera). 4. Performances have been a successful part of our Maker Faire presence in the past. We have a number of acts who could potentially perform, either on a dedicated stage or on the normal performance spaces. We do have enough sound equipment that we could potentially bring to set up a dedicated stage (as we did at the San Mateo Maker Faire). Potential acts include Crashfaster - crashfaster.com The Glowing Stars - theglowingstars.com Louis Gorenfeld - http://www.gorenfeld.net/lou/chiptune.php3 It is common to have a projector and a dedicated visual artist during chiptune performances (this obviously works best indoors). | Indoor | 20 amp circuit (1501-2000 watts, 120V) | It would be nice to have WiFi. | We have appeared for a few years running at the main faire in San Mateo. 28 | 8/17/2011 0:21:21 | Whiskerman | 24-year old multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter Graham Patzner has been performing his edgy, hallucinatory soul songs to Bay Area audiences for years, most often as a solo act but also as the frontman of stripped-down folk ensembles, strings-only duos and five-piece horn sections. Early in 2011, after years of flux, Whiskerman took shape when Patzner found himself surrounded by a band that he felt he could call home. Backed by singer and keyboardist Maddy Streicek, bassist Will Lawrence, drummer Nicholas Cobbett, and his brother Lewis Patzner on cello and trombone, Graham takes to the stage wildly wielding guitar, violin, piano and a distinct voice that's both powerful and vulnerable. His passion for the craft of songwriting and the importance of lyrics is apparent especially in his more recent compositions, many of which are on the group's debut record released this fall. The resultant sound is a Frankenstein fusion of a simple folk backbone, soulful blues core, wide-streching art-rock limbs and big jazz feet. 57 | 8/24/2011 13:05:12 | Eurostache - Sound Creations | Eurostache, with members based in the Bay Area, is a collective experimenting with sound by shedding traditional codes of music and instrument selection to create new methods of aural communication. Performances center around real-time electro-acoustic collaboration with custom hand-built and circuit-bent instruments along with traditional ones. Extended vocal techniques humanize the highly transient nature of the live exploration. Additional layers of interaction with the audience include elements such as movement and live scoring to films. Eurostache was founded in 2008 at the intersection of 23rd and Telegraph in Oakland and has six regular members that employ instruments that range from circuit-bent electronics, laptops, toys, a waterphone, and a singing tea kettle, to a cello, euphonium, and clarinet. The core ensemble is frequently augmented with guests from the San Francisco Bay Area. The group has previously performed at spaces such as Olympia Experimental Music Festival 2011 (Olympia, WA), Luggage Store Gallery (Oakland, CA), Vessel Gallery (Oakland, CA), Krowswork Gallery (Oakland, CA), San Francisco State University, CELLspace Gallery (San Francisco, CA), Mama Buzz Cafe (Oakland, CA) and Maker Faire (San Mateo, CA). | www.eurostache.com | http://eurostache.com/Documents/stachephone.jpg | Arts | Thom | Tamayo | Eurostache, GmbH | eurostache | tamayo@gmail.com | Menlo Park | CA | 94025 | I DO NOT intend to sell merchandise at East Bay MIni Maker Faire 2011. | Performance or workshop - no booth needed | We have about 6 performers. UC Berkeley students mentor local high school students as they design, construct, and program a mobile robot. A key feature of the competition is the $100 per team entrance fee, which ensures that finances are not a barrier to entry. Another central goal of PiE is to give UC Berkeley engineering students the opportunity to serve the local community while simultaneously gaining practical experience in hardware and software design as well as leadership and teaching. | pioneers.berkeley.edu | https://tbp.berkeley.edu/gallery/d/238553-1/PiEScrimmage_zh_+072.JPG | Science, Engineering, Young Makers | Or | Weizman | Pioneers in Engineering | PiERobotics | coordinators@pioneers.berkeley.edu | Berkeley | California | 94720 | I DO NOT intend to sell merchandise at East Bay MIni Maker Faire 2011. | Standard booth space (10'x8' space), but need help with table and chairs (we have a limited supply)., Non-standard set-up | Since our group works with robotics, we will bring at least one robot for attendees to drive around the floor. 71 | 8/31/2011 8:23:43 | Crank Ensemble | The Crank Ensemble had its beginning on the summer solstice of 2005. Artist Larnie Fox had been invited to present a sound installation at the "Garden of Memory" event at a columbarium (a repository for human ashes) in Oakland California. He had planned to have a group small motorized sound sculptures with contact microphones that he could control and amplify, but the motor noise was bothersome. So, he build a group of very low-tech hand cranked instruments, and invited friends and acquaintances to play them. The people who volunteered for that first event are the Crank Ensemble. The instruments are made from inexpensive materials: plywood, coat-hangers, rubber bands, springs, bones, feathers, found objects and piezo microphones. A hand-cranked instrument is a mechanical version of a loop. By amplifying and layering the sounds they produce it is possible to create a wide range of rhythms and sound environments. A conductor, usually Larnie, but not always, controls the pace and mixes the sound on a mixing board. No effects are used. The instruments function as stand-alone visual art as well as vehicles for performance The band members are a diverse group of Bay Area residents. Some are actual musicians, but there are writers, visual artists, film makers, web designers etc., in the group. They have become good friends in the course of staging performances. The Ensemble has played in many venues in the SF Bay Area including The Oakland Museum, Tides Center's Thoreau Gallery, Maker's Faire, The Lab, Luggage Store Gallery, 12 Galaxies, and The San Francisco Dump. We have collaborated with Theatre of Yugen and the San Francisco Sinfonietta and were featured in Music from Other Minds' "Brink" series in San Francisco, and New Town Arts "Cams, Cranks and Computers and at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. | http://crankensemble.com/ | http://www.flickr.com/photos/larnie/418450169/sizes/o/in/set-72157594583563396/ | Sound Art | Larnie | Fox | Crank Ensemble | larniefox | larniefox@gmail.com | 182 Maynard Street | San Francisco | CA | 94112 | I DO NOT intend to sell merchandise at East Bay MIni Maker Faire 2011. | Performance or workshop - no booth needed | Crank Ensemble Tech needs • electrical outlet • seven chairs. • one table, big enough to accommodate a mixing board. • one hour setup time, including sound check (noise) • a PA is desirable but not essential for a small space. • video live feed, with camera person focusing on individual instruments is desirable, but not essential. Our standard performance time is two, twenty minute sets. Our standard pay is $500. A hands-on show and tell with the instruments is possible. We can be flexible I (or guest conductor) sit in a chair in the middle of the stage in front of the table and simultaneously conduct the ensemble and run our own mixing board. Our goal is to help scientists worldwide build their own infrastructure, with a particular emphasis on emerging-science settings. We aim to develop an online network that provides: - flexible and easy-to-follow design documents - standard protocols to verify equipment quality Here, we present an initial project from a student intern. Anthony has created the first piece of an interactive online library of “How-To” blueprints for construction of quality lab equipment using locally available offthe-shelf items. Together, Anthony and Tekla Labs built and documented the DIY process for building various kinds of lab media rotators with quality assurance support. We show that minimally customized off-the-shelf parts can combine to become multiple types of useful research-grade lab equipment. 82 | 8/31/2011 23:31:55 | For the People | The fused dichroic glass art is a rather new medium and creative process. It was actually, originally created by the U.S. space program to be implemented in the outer atmosphere. Of little use to the space industry, it became adopted by a multitude of fused glass artists. The reflective and refractive properties of fused glass, especially dichroic, are unlike any other creative material. Amazing compositions meld into one another once melted to over 1600 degrees and allowed to cool for a full day. Although a glass creation, the final product is quite durable and will last forever if properly cared for. These wearable artworks will get countless compliments when worn around, guaranteed. Another beautiful thing is that they compliment both casual as well as formal clothing. If, for some reason, you ever have an issue with your glasswork, feel free to bring it back to us and we will surely address the situation. 86 | 9/1/2011 18:12:43 | Tapigami | Tapigami is an interactive installation. Danny Scheible has been creating an on going social installation for the past 6 years. Scheible use his art as a way to inspire, legitimize and provide equality to individual creativity. These shows are designed to redefine not only the meaning and context of the gallery space but also the interaction that is possible between artist and viewer. Scheible creates imaginary city scapes, gardens, and abstract environments all mashed together to break down normal social interactions. Scheible's environments should be approached as a platform to produce inspiration and legitimize artists. Breaking down the art making process to its simplest forms, commitment, material and questions, Scheible attempts to show the viewer creation is possible with simple belief. His materials are chosen to remove any friction and separation of the myth that art exists outside of day to day life and its interactions. Guest of Tapigami are welcome, invited and encourage to make there own creations and add them to the walls of the exhibition space and the maker faire. Danny Scheible acts as a guide to this interaction between self and material, constantly creating and remaking the existing show. Danny would like to remind all that are attending his show that an artist is someone you make yourself. I will provide materials and instruction for everyone and show them my process and techniques. I will encourage them to create and to become part of my art. I will also be selling my art at the space. Currently my installation consists of a 1500 square foot city, made out of 80,000 individual sculptures. A 40foot long 8 foot wide 12 foot high, leviathan created from 4000 wire hangers each covered with different fabric from donated and recycled garments, about 200 connect sculptures that can be kicked thrown passed around. an 12 foot high tree created out of books(it is my tree of knowledge). Also I have begun to commission artist to paint and color my city sculptures, thus creating murals inside my city. Lastly I will be creating work for the entire show and giving it to participants. My work is made up of thousands of components and can fit any space. The only requirement for filling a space is time. 90 | 9/1/2011 22:56:11 | Storing Kid Energy | We will use a seesaw to capture kid energy and convert it into potential energy. The potential energy can then be released to power a small device (probably a fan). This gives us a way to experiment with saving up some energy over a longer period of time and releasing it in a short burst. The original idea was to power a popcorn popper, however that requires more power than we can easily generate and store. So we decided to do it on a smaller scale first, to test out the principles. | Young Makers | Lena & Kurt | Fleischer | kurt@alumni.caltech.edu | 112 Sunnyside Ave | Piedmont | CA | 94611 | Activity area (hands-on activitiies for attendees), Non-standard set-up | We will need a water supply. Would be nice if we're on dirt or grass so the landing is a bit softer if a kid falls off (we'll try to avoid that, of course). | Outdoor | Normal - does not interfere with conversation | None | I don't need WiFi Internet access. | Yes, EBMMF, and the San Mateo Maker Faire. However, the device will be modified for this year's EBMMF. | Everyone's talking about it :-) | I'm not sure, please contact me to discuss. | The kids need to be safe on the seesaw. We've exhibited this seesaw (the Water Totter) at EBMMF and the San Mateo Maker Faire, so we're fairly experienced at it. | We haven't made this yet. We have the seesaw from last year, but the rest of the design is on the drawing board. I think we can get something interesting done; that's pretty much what happened last year. Once we get going on it, there will probably be some other kids involved. | Yes | Maker booth or exhibit | ||||||||||||

92 | 9/2/2011 18:28:18 | Scribe: An Interactive Post-Card Project | Summary- “Scribe” is an interactive project utilizing the talents of poets, professional writers and calligraphers to transcribe post-cards for visitors through the lost art of letter writing. I propose that these writers will listen to the intended messages and then artistically transcribe onto pre-stamped postcards. With the help of professionals, Maker-Fair visitors and the intended recipients will become engaged in the age-old practice of written correspondence. Cost- Participants will pay for stamps only. (The letters are presented pre-stamped upon completion) Intent- I intend to reinvigorate the art of the written word by utilizing the talents of writers and calligraphers. I want to initiate a conversation about modern communication practices and the value of a written letter as an art object and memento. Description- The art of letter writing is an astonishingly emotional method of communication. The quiet excitement of finding a personal letter and the tactility of holding a handwritten object is lost in the binary world. Email and text reinvented communication by conquering the boundaries of geography and time. But the ritual experience and intentionality of the handwritten message is becoming lost. Historically, Scribes would provide a service to societies with low literacy rates. I believe this service can again be applied to a society that has become desensitized by the overexposure of modern communication. Facebook updates, tweets, and blogging have marginalized the unique connection people share with letters. By design handwritten letters are intended for one recipient with a deliberateness of word choice and composition, which stands in contrast to bulk texts and shared updates. Frequency, careless arrangement and the public nature of digital social communication have depersonalized the modern message. I believe this interactive project can reintroduce people to the power of writing.
