Seeing Israel through the eyes of a young woman whodidn't really make the choice to relocate from the U.S. herself wasvery enlightening. I can only imagine how much of a culture shockit can be to move halfway around the world even if you are withyour family. I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyoneinterested in the Israel experience.0 of 0 people found thefollowing review helpful. There are some girls who have their whole lives planned byeighteen. Gaby Kupfer is not one of them. She's more the type ofgirl who moves six thousand miles across the world, leaving behindhalf a boyfriend, one good friend, and a summer paycheck that wentdirectly to her mother. In Israel, instead of a land resplendentwith milk and honey, she finds a country quite similar to America, filled with disappointing starts and abrupt endings. But then, inthe most unlikely of places, Gaby finds something she's beenlooking for her whole life.Pnina Baim has also written Choices, acoming-of-age novel about a teenage girl in foster care and herattempts to make a better future for herself.

"A lovely book..." Robert Avrech, Emmy Award WinningScreenwriterFrom the AuthorThis novel is based on many of myexperiences in Israel. It is a country filled with fascinatingpeople, incredible energy, delicious food, and the sense thathistory is not just under your feet, but being made everyday. Here's some more information abouttopics I mentioned in the book:Shiloh is a wonderful, warmcommunity. I spent a lot of time there when I was a teenager inIsrael, and the communal feeling of family and relaxed lifestylemade a deep impression on me. It is worthwhile to takea moment to learn more about the community. Military enlistment ismandatory for all Israeli boys and girls. Many volunteers come fromoverseas to partake in the cultural experience of either the armyor national service. I encourage you to read more about serving inthe Israeli Defense Force and lone soldiers. I may not haveportrayed the kibbutz lifestyle so favorably, but nevertheless, Ihighly recommend visiting one yourself on your next trip to Israel.I spent six weeks on a kibbutz in the summer of 2001, and althoughI was too immature to appreciate it, it was a very cool experiencein retrospect. Yad Vashem is Israel's world-renowned HolocaustMuseum. The administrative offices are located at the site, but forthe purpose of story, I separated them. The recovery project is amonumental project that was recently inducted into the UNESCOregistry. For the novel, I took the liberty of fictionalizingGaby's job description. Read more about the arduous, awe-inspiringwork Yad Vashem on their website. My great-aunt Lee Rubin was aphenomenal, brilliant woman who passed away in 2002 and is sorelymissed. Everything I wrote about her is factual, and is based on mymemories of her and the reminiscing of her sisters, Dotty Stein,Simi Strum, and Mickey Smith. The one exception is the story aboutthe boy who lost his shoe on the train, which I overheard inconversation and falsely attributed to her. When I came upon thestory that a large number of descendants of Nazis converted toJudaism, I knew I had to include it in the novel. It is rumoredthat close to three hundred Germans have done so. Read more aboutthis astonishing story at aish.com. A huge thank you goes out to mymany supporters who helped me fund this book, among them: SoraMoss, Miriam Goldblatt, Iris Baumgarten, Shaindy Gross, ShulamisSoffer, Tina Imani, Nillie Goldman, MaaYanky Davis Co, Ben AbbyFeferman, and last but never least, my ever-suffering husband whois always there whenever I ask. Thank you, Jacob. A specialshout-out to my niece, Eliana Goldblatt, who volunteered toproof-read my book one more time. That's dedication. I would loveto hear what you thought of the book.
