48 | COM 382-00 | Special Topic: Race, Gender & Stand Up Comedy | Online Asynchronous | 1 | The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the history, basic components, and different identity-based forms of stand-up comedy in the U.S. We will examine the evolution of resistive stand-up comedy from its African American roots, how women like Phyllis Diller and Moms Mabley used it as a communicative form of resistance for women, and ultimately how different marginalized populations use stand-up as a form of “safe” dissent and community connection today. We will, of course, regularly watch stand-up as part of our course and include these texts as part of our broader understanding of the medium.
49 | COM 386-00 | Special Topic: American Identity & the Sitcom | Online Asynchronous | 1 | Sitcoms (a portmanteau of situational comedies) aren't just entertainment. While we turn to this decades old pastime, examining sitcoms gives us insight on how identities in the US have been defined, and how the sitcom has been used to create (sometimes falsely) cohesive narratives about what it means to be “American.” Looking at sitcoms in their historical and contemporary contexts also teaches us about the everyday. Why did post-war sitcoms focus on the domestic? Why did Norman Lear create All in the Family and The Jeffersons after various civil and social rights movements of the late 60s? How can critically examining the plethora of sitcom content today tell us more about our American culture(s)? And lastly how does looking at industrial influences change our understanding and perspective on the why and how Americans’ stories are being told? These are just some of the questions we address in this course to understand the cultural narrative of what it means to be American. In this course, students will be critical, cultural analysts, watching sitcoms as a source of information for who and how we have defined ourselves as Americans.
