5/26/2015 8:11:395/23/15 This red section is a long (maybe 30/40 miles) section of mostly gravel roads with a few shallow mud holes and lots of dust. About half way through you will come to the section that you will realize is what makes this a true red section! the section is about 2 or 3 miles long and just keeps getting worse with out much chance to turn back if you start down the downhill section. However after you make it down the hill you are almost to a gravel road for the rest of the red route. This will be OK on most dry days for even bigger adventure bikes with good riders but might not be much fun in wet weather. This rough section is a peace of cake in any weather for most smaller bikes, DRZ, XR's, Bronson 1

6/30/2015 14:45:58From Meadow Fork Gap, the red ride is hardly very difficult until you get pretty far up Harmon Den Road on the south side of I40. The connector between Harmon Den rd and the Cosby/Cataloochee Rd is all that would be considered "red" by most any rider on a decent dualsport with 50/50 tires. These roads are all well-maintained gravel roads that any average sedan could navigate.

I comment because true ADV riders looking for a challenge will take this red path recommended here and miss the true adventure ride just one drainage away. At MEadow Fork Gap, go down Hurricane Creek road. It is not signed but it is the right-hand of the two roads going down the south side of Meadow Fork Gap. It is a very popular 4wd and ADV ride that takes you down a very scenic valley thru several river crossings and eventually dumps you out right on the emergency lane of I40. Google Hurricane Creek rd ADV or 4wd and you will see all kinds of info. Then take I40 maybe 1-2 miles to the west to get off at the Harmon Den exit to rejoin the red route as described here. This is just a "redder" variation.

I ride out there all the time and in my planning to do the TAT, decided to go scope out this section of the TAT's eastern extension. I was disappointed to see that the truly ADV ride was left off in favor of a really tame gravel road. If you have GPS capability, you will note that a through route via Hurricane Ck rd is not possible. Garmin has the road ending just shy of I40 which I can only assume they do so that they are not dealing with folks getting up into Hurricane Ck who do not belong there. But I assure you... the road goes through. Enjoy!!

8/7/2015 18:58:17Fun,fun, fun!!! Twisty curved roads everywhere! We took the red and found it well within our riding ability. We are on Yamaha 250's. A heavy bike might have some trouble on the very top of the mountain as some very deep ruts have developed.. I took a small spill when I got deep into one. The red section is LONG. Take a snack and enjoy the view. Firegirlnome@gmail.com

7/24/2016 19:14:16I encountered downed trees blocking the road on the red section from I-40 exit 7 on FS 288, past the intersection with Tower road, through the old yellow gate. I had no choice but to turn around and ride back.Ridingman1

1/23/2017 13:35:59Red trail in (along) the ole Cataloochee Hwy maybe.Approx. 1082 ft south from the intersection of Road 288 and Tower Rd there appears to be a small road off to the right of Tower Rd that seems to be where this route breaks off of Tower Rd.The road marked in red isn't labeled in any Google Maps or Topo maps I have found in trying to prepare for this section. I only saw a very small section after blowing up the map as large as I could.H8SPVMT/Bob

Jeepers - Red Section after I-40. Scenic and curvy with gravel.
Stay on the used portions of the road. About halfway you'll have so good fun. Wet or dry.
Stay off the ledges. A car recently rolled over the edge trying to pass.

6/23/2019 17:35:52The Red Trail is still very do-able
The trail is clear, I have ridden this twice now and the roads are open.
If you try to locate roads in Google they don't exist.
Longarm Rd seems to end before making a connection but it
does connect back up and this is a fun ride.
