Debian is great for server. Unfortunately, windows is still persistent in the house, so Samba4 is around. I always keep a copy of my smb.conf file on the share so I don't lose it.

Used to use debain, but qbittorrent and librasterbar-6 is broken in debain stable, Now using ubuntu 14.04, I feel like I have to have everything installed from repos, so no manual packages, so that seems to really limit my choices of distro. Ubuntu server seems the best bet, even though I'm not an ubuntu fan.

Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, planning to have a BTRFS over 2x3TB WD reds for data (risky, I know... I plan to back-up often).

The computer is mostly intended as a NAS, but since it has a nice APU and it will mostly contain media... I will hook it to my TV and let it serve as an HTPC as well.

Access to the files will be through Samba shares (for everyone else on the house) and sshfs mounts for me. The transmission torrent headless server is cool, since you can directly download stuff on the server. For backups, automated duplicity backups once a week during the night to an external USB drive is good enough for my needs... at least for now.

#1 thing: reliable remote backups. I threw FreeNAS on a couple of old machines I had lying around collecting dust, placed one at my Mother's and another at my brother's and set up my home file server to do remote backups. I think a lot of us tend to prepare a lot for things like drive failure (if we prepare at all) but we can easily overlook things like burglary, house fires, etc.

I'd like to find the sweet spot balancing horsepower and electrical power consumption. I've tossed a Kill-A-Watt meter on my boxes for a month and was a bit shocked to realize how much money I spend monthly on running my machines. If I can meet the same needs with less power, that would be good.

Because I need stable and fully featured ZFS for my backups, above everything else I have decided to go FreeBSD with Linux virtualized on top. This is not optimal since FreeBSD lacks good VM options. If only Xen supported dom0...

My setups will mostly be quite standard, with a few exceptions. Thanks to docker I am able to package a few things that is a great deal of pain to install at this time.

For example. Jitsi Meet, configured with jitsi-videobridge on top of prosody, is a great Hangouts replacement. I have almost managed to make a great docker container for this (which will be shared on github), something nobody else seems to have done yet.

Right after installation I install: tree, axel, ncdu, openssh, htop
(top used applications that are not present on the system)

Depending on the specs of the machine, i also like to install virtualbox, or some sort of virtualisation system. Easier to separate by application domain, and also easier to back up (screenshot, ...), duplicate, or move to other machines of the LAN...

Debian stable (atm Wheezy). The only hacks i have done is for really specific stuff. I live in a shared flat, so I connect my own boxes to it thru a openvpn, most of the services are only reachable in that way.

Then there is the network side that is open for all, that has a few things open, such as a media, backup folders etc for my flatmate and then there is the line out that is basically shut down, the only open port is the one to connect to openvn.

About the lan vs cloud server, i have both, for different purposes. I like to tunnel thru my vpn when i am out and about and connect to open wifi networks and I keep some stuff there, like a webserver if i need to put up stuff for others to reach, i run my irc from there etc.

I like it that way because my home server is not visible on irc and I don't have to run more ports than necessary. In that way i feel somewhat calm about the risks of being hacked and get my precious data destroyed. Yes it can happen but it is never exposed to the outworld and it is fairly shut down.

My current setup is a CentOS server Running Samba for file sharing, Plex for media serving, and Owncloud for hopefully a web frontend for files. This runs as a frontend for shares off my FreeNAS storage array.

My perfect setup would be two servers both setup as virtual hosts (unsure whether I would use KVM or Vmware) and iscsi mount all the space from a pair of FreeNAS storage arrays that would replicate between themselves. VM's would run a few different VM's, one for file sharing with Owncloud and Samba shares, One for Plex (might merge that onto the sharing one), I would have a uTorrent server running from somewhere, probably an admin VM that would host dhcp,dns, web, etc as well. I'm sure the token windows VM would exist just for those times when one is needed, and another solid linux VM as a term serve for the computers upstairs.

This config is subject to change :) ( oh, and if I could manage it, another virtual host just for development, different linux distros, openstack testing, etc).

Running Arch with all my TV / films managed by Plex. I recommend Filebot (in the AUR) for renaming TV episodes based on online databases. I've always wanted to give an MPD server a try, but Clementine is just great for music. Would also love to host my own email server, but I hear it's very difficult.

Currently just use XBMC with the XBMChub extension pack on my openSUSE 13.1 laptop install. I just open XBMC and point it to an external drive where I put my download files.


I mainly use irc xdcc downloads to get files, with public torrents as a last resort.
But I wouldn't mind learning about Sickbeard/Sabnzb/CouchPotato. ;D

I think the main importance for the NAS will be enough storage, being able to put whatever on it without having to think; is this going to fit? So a few TB's in RAIDZ on FreeBSD would be awesome.
Would like to have it Transmission and SabNZBd would be nice to run on there, also any kind of DLNA server. I also started looking into Git Annex recently, better than Bittorrent Sync imho.

Oh yeah for data protection:

- Monthly ZFS scrubs

- Snapshots every day automatically with the tool zfs-periodic (which does automatically make/delete snapshots, for example if you make snapshots everyday after one week it will only keep one snapshot from that week)

- ZFS send to other ZFS storage device (in an other place)


My preffered ways of making backups:

- Simply rsync -avz to a server over SSH, you can use a encfs/pefs layer.
- Rsync with history using the backup option: --backup-dir=rescue/$(date +"%F-%H%M%S") --suffix=""
- Duplicity (and for Windows Duplicati)
- Bup, I think one of the best backup utilities out there, but quite difficult to setup and still a little bit experimental. It allows deduplication and can generate parity blocks to be able to recover in case of bitrot (if you don't use ZFS) https://github.com/bup/bup

Heard also good things about "obnam" aswell.

I use OpenMediaVault installed on Debian LXDE. This way I can still have a graphical interface if I want to do something in the gui, and I feel more comfortable solving eventual problems.
I'd really love to have OMV ported to Ubuntu LTS, and with full support for ZFSonLinux. I'm well aware it'll still probably take years to pull off the latter in a stable and production-ready matter...

AMD Quad processor, Nvidia video card with HDMI out. 3x 2TB HDDs configured as a RAID 5 array (for additional storage and hardware fault tolerance) - used for storage of movies/music/tv shows. 500 GB HDD to store system files and OS, etc. Ubuntu 12.04 desktop edition with all the unnecessary stuff stripped out. XBMC Gotham. Sickbeard. CouchPotato. transmission-deamon. Plus a small assortment of scripts a cron jobs.

Excellent home server/media centre.

Also, DD-WRT on home router with VPN server so I can manage my home server away from home :).

I currently have an Ubuntu 12.04 setup with Minecraft for gaming, PS3 Media Server for my 360, samba for file sharing with my Wii (rom saves) and other computers, transmission for Linux ISO's and Humble Bundles. I also have Dropbox for faster syncing when I pave a box. All of this sits behind a PFSense router with OpenVPN to offload some work and allow me to control the network.

hi i'm ryan my current setup up is due an upgrade its a cent-os box with AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+ with 3gb ram 2tb raid 1.
its running plex, subsonic, sickbeard, couchpotato, headphones and transmission etc. im due an upgrade but as im so dependant on plex and subsonic im reluctant to have ne etxended down time so im try to get a much more lightweight versison running on my raspberry pi using arch with mpd, minidlna, nzbdrone, nzbget, and rtorrent to to get me over the weekend while i reinstall

freenas 8TBarray in the garage with pf router next to it.
Freenas for storage only - no fancy plugins.
nfs for the wired clients
samba for the android devices
Ubuntu 12.04 htpc - also serves as webserver running subsonic and handles bt sync
raspberry pi at familiy home with 1TB usb running bt sync pointing at htpc. awesome sauce

- no-ip for DDNS
- Transmission-daemon for seeding linux iso's (nice webinterface)
- quasselcore for easy irc
- tor bridge
- nginx with linux-dash (https://github.com/afaqurk/linux-dash)

Hardware-wise I have nothing on the sd-card, just a pointer to boot from the external (externally powered!) harddrive.
