mhThe third installment of the re-telling, and completely re-imagined tale of everybody’s favorite Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins - and I’m not kidding; these movies are very loosely inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s amazing children’s book - which seemingly only coincidentally shares many of the same characters - has received a name change. Director Peter Jackson wrote on his Facebook page, “When we did the premiere [DOS] trip late last year, I had a quiet conversation with the studio about the idea of revisiting the title. We decided to keep an open mind until a cut of the film was ready to look at. We reached that point last week, and after viewing the movie, we all agreed there is now one title that feels completely appropriate.

And so: "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" it is.”

mhThe three main protagonists - Harry, Hermione, and Ron - they’re just kids, right? Yes, and no. I see in these three, in this first installment, a wonderful picture of the Elect; the Called of God; the Church; Christians. And here is a simple way to share the Good News with friends and family:

As others see our heroes there are three things that describe them. They are

• Foolish
• Powerless
• Despised

Harry, being raised by his aunt Petunia and uncle Vernon is DESPISED in their eyes. They dote on and spoil their son, Dudley Dursley, while treating Harry as a servant - replete with guile and barking orders at him [AUDIO 1]. He is threatened by Mr. Dursley before leaving for the zoo [AUDIO 2]. He is accused of FOOLISHness as the Dursley’s are admiring Dudley’s new school uniform [AUDIO 3]. And he is POWERLESS to do anything about his current state. In fact he can’t fathom that it could actually be any other way. Consider his conversation about this mysterious school called “Hogwarts” with the half-giant, Hagrid, as he is being rescued from a tiny lighthouse island [AUDIO 4]: “I can’t be anything special. I can’t have any higher purpose. I’m just Harry.”

Hermione has a the same problem. She is really not liked by others; even her own friends - spoiler alert! Even the fella she ends up marrying [AUDIO 5,6]. Because she can’t overcome her own issues with self esteem, her overcompensation leads her to be a “know-it-all” but in reality she behaves FOOLISHly. Which causes her to be DESPISED. And on her own she seems to be POWERLESS to change.

Ron… His lot in life is best summed-up by a scathing statement from Draco Malfoy [AUDIO 7]. All three descriptors can be found in this one clip.

But these three, which the world considers nothing at all, are capable of great things - such as defeating a fully grown Mountain Troll [AUDIO 8] and He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, to much more - as we’ll discover as we discuss the rest of the series.

And they are a great example, a picture, of Christians as described in 1 Corinthians 1:26-29
1 Cor. 1:26-29 (NLT)

Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world’s eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called you. Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful. God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important. As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God.
