University of Arizona - TucsonAZMDMS2/OMS2NegativelyUnsure / OtherNoNot sureUnsure / OtherNoPreclerkship students received an email asking us to volunteer to vaccinate people but literally nothing about getting vaccinated ourselves. Our dean of the COM sent an email that says "COVID Vaccine Update: Banner University Medicine Division – Tucson leadership understands team members may have many questions around vaccine options in the coming weeks. They are working closely with system and local leaders to ensure they are communicating with the BUMD-T team and will keep us updated on the vaccine distribution plan. In the coming days, colleagues who are in the highest tier of priority will start receiving e-mail from a Banner Health corporate account. Embedded in that mail are links to a survey to review key demographic and medical history information that in turn will facilitate optimized scheduling. The links and surveys and the order in which the letters are issued is personalized to the colleague. It is important not to forward those emails but rather to complete the survey for yourself.
While this is an exciting milestone in this pandemic, it is important to note that the measures that have been put in place to reduce the spread of COVID-19 (such as socially distancing, masking and hand hygiene) still need to occur, even after receiving the vaccine, as the vaccine is not 100% effective against the virus and will take time to disperse to the communities we serve."
UA-COMT literally began the school year in 2020 without testing students who came back after the summer. MS1s had no choice on whether they wanted to be virtual or not. No med student has EVER required to be covid tested in order to be in clinical settings. MS1s and MS2s have been in the hospital seeing patients for bedside with no N95s... pretty much cloth mask and face shields to practice giving physical exams on people. The school never reached out and asked if we had chronic illnesses or risk factors for bad covid outcomes. Overall the response to covid has been absolutely terrible. They even had a photoshoot in mid-July asking students to pose with masks on for a marketing campaign... pretty much while Arizona was the highest in the WORLD for covid cases.

Both Pfizer and Moderna vaccines have been allocated/distributed to students and frontline workers. The only ones potentially not receiving the vaccine right now are M4s out of the state. They can get the vaccine when they return to CT, but if they’re in a state not using the same vaccine administration system as the one in CT then the school can’t do much to get them priority access. YesHighWe received several emails essentially saying “sit tight, we’re working on it and we’ll update you” up until they had more information for us at the end of December. At that point we were informed students were going to be submitted for access to vaccination in waves based on their risk of exposure to covid patients (we normally do weekly clinical placements starting in October of M1, so the first wave was M3s/M4s and M1s/M2s placed in inpatient settings, then later waves with all of the M1s/M2s placed in outpatient settings). At this point I believe most, if not all, of us have received the link to sign up for vaccination. I appreciate how hard the school has worked to make vaccinating us a reality! As much as we all love to complain, Netter admin seem to go to bat for their students more often than not. From what I can tell, they reached out to a bunch of our clinical partners/DPH/whoever they thought they needed to so that they could ensure we get the vaccines in a timely manner, which is awesome. We get weekly updates, it gets brought up with the dean meetings and then the info is given to our class, deans will respond to emails and take COVID exposures very seriously. We have access to free testing 1x/week off-campus, 2x/week on campus. There was a COVID relief fund that gave money and was a easy process to navigate if you needed it. Our exams were scheduled with COVID in mind - for ex. a spring exam that is notorious for 30% of the class failing was made to be easier so only 5ish students failed. It's not perfect but looking at other schools YSM has done a good job in terms of COVID response and vaccination.

YesLowUnclear what official status was at the beginning, but given # of vaccines our hospital received there seemed to be enough for the MS1s and MS2s to be vaccinated. Internal rumblings between MS3s and admin about when they would receive the vaccine as many MS3s were seeing COVID+ patients. One dean apparently said students were being "selfish" and "unprofessional" for inquiring when they would be receiving the vaccine/wanting to be in the first wave. Med school admin/hospital had previously stated that only students (in any year) who "volunteered to give vaccine" could receive the vaccine...the issue of "coercion" came up. However, the hospital separately sent out communications to all the medical students saying they could receive it over holiday break so it quickly became a mute point.

University of Illinois College of medicineILMDMS3/OMS3Somewhere in between / No opinionYesMediumWe are in tier 1 level 5 for receiving vaccination. The hope is that we will be able to be vaccinated in early January with the next shipment. The school sent out an email to the student body (with student input) regarding whether they would like to be vaccinated and if they are in a higher risk group or live with higher risk individuals. Weekly updates sent out. Unsure / OtherUnsure / UnknownPossible higher priority for early clinical exposure students (eg M1s rather M2s studying for step)Our college has 3 campuses. They’ve also said to look out for emails to schedule the vaccine appointments. Several students are already receiving vaccines. MS2s have higher priority than MS1s since they will start rotations soon. Very transparent about the vaccine and are prioritizing residents and frontline workers.

Indiana UniversityINMDMS2/OMS2PositivelyYesHighI can't speak to specifics, but I know an M3 that's gotten the vaccine and everyone seems to be getting them at the same proportion to others in healthcare.YesLowNot in the first wave, but admin is apparently working with state to figure out timing. I'm assuming we'll land in with the general population. Also of note, a huge portion of M1/2s have signed up to administer the vaccine, and will be getting higher priority for vaccination, after the frontline healthcare workers get theirs. All things considered, I think IU has done a pretty good job on Covid for students. This might not work if you don't have an IU email, but we had a town hall recently that covered everything really well. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1IkPjlGTGyZYeCefwfI588yUrLvr3bj192ex3Jy8APJk/edit

University of Kansas - WichitaKansasMDMS2/OMS2PositivelyYesHighDean talked to chief medical officers at associated hospitals about students on rotation as accidental exposures have occurred (pt results not back yet, pt tests positive while in hospital, etc). CMO asked for in patient M3 and m4 to be sent to the vaccine set up clinic. All other were told by end of January, and then got email dec 23 that all med students who wanted to could go to county health dept. If they missed that, second shipment can get any students not vaccinated as well. YesMediumOriginally told by end of school year and priority for this group was M2s before clinical rotations began in June. Then received word over winter break to show up at county health dept dec 23 to get first shot if in town. If not available, can get first shot in next shipment. Hospital systems prioritized ICU staff and residents. Our resident programs that see covid pts were vaccinated before students. They've been very transparent with us. On a county level, the CMOs and public health officers seem to have decided medical students fall into a "health care personnel potential exposure" category which puts us higher on priority but not highest obviously. I feel very well informed and cared for. We have 3 campuses and they decided to go ahead and just vaccinate everyone as fast as possible locally. I believe the Salina campus is already done as well. Our Deans were advocating for us on a state level because the state distribution plan completely ignored healthcare students which I am sure is not uncommon, but they tried to being it into the discussion to ensure we werent forgotten as people providing care and being exposed.
