Understand and recognise the Elements of

Keyboard Skills
This unit is all about effective keyboard
performance technique including basic treble clef staff
notation.
Sonority City
The key to this unit is pupil’s
understanding of the terms: TIMBRE AND
SONORITY with an introduction to the orchestra
followed by exploring one orchestral section or
family per lesson.
Bolivar to Buena Vista
In this project, students encounter the ideas and sounds of the music of Central and South
America through listening and performing.
Ukulele
To learn the context of the ukulele and how to hold the instrument.
To develop listening skills such as identifying instruments, tempo, pitch and dynamics.
To perform as an ensemble and demonstrate skills such as timing, rehearsal, strumming, plucking and reading tablature.
Music Around the World.
Students will identify and use the inter-related dimensions of music expressively. Students will learn basic facts about Chinese music, Chinese musical instruments, and the characteristic sound of Chinese music. They will learn how to use staff and other relevant notations appropriately and accurately and know the ‘pattern’ of notes in a Pentatonic Scale.

8Composing with SongMaker - Understand and compose drum beats using Song Maker. Understand what constitutes a stepwise melody.
Understand using steps and small leaps in melody and understand the use of syncopated rhythms in melody.
Variations
This unit develops pupils’ ability to recognise, explore and make creative use of the elements of music found in variation form.
Song Writing
Pupils study the characteristics of successful popular songs and compose their own songs using a given structure.
All that Jazz and Blues.
This unit develops pupil’s understanding of the key musical features of Jazz and
Blues; exploring chords, chord patterns and how improvisation is used within Jazz and Blues genres.
Human Locomotion.
Students consolidate their understanding of the ways in which music is used in film, focusing specifically on music that accompanies human locomotion. It emphasises the ways in which musical ideas can communicate energy and excitement. It develops students’ ability to compose their own music in response to the moving image.
Carmen
This project is an introduction to Bizet’s Carmen. Pupils study the music and characters of the opera and related works.
Students will perform a chord sequence using three chords in a minor key, using one of four given figurations, or using a figuration they invent themselves. They will write a simple melody using chord notes, with or without passing notes, based on a given rhythm.

9"New Directions (20th Century Music)
Listening and performance. Through exploring a wide range of music from the minimalist and expressionist styles, pupils learn about common trends in twentieth century music such as the use of different tonalities, chromaticism, dissonance and extremes of pitch and dynamics.
All about the Bass
Students exploring the various meanings of the term ‘bass’ before looking at the Bass Clef and the names of the notes in the lines, spaces and ledger lines on the Bass Stave. Instruments and voices which use the Bass Clef are referred to throughout the unit.
Soundtracks
The unit begins with an introduction into the purpose of film music and the decisions and challenges a composer of film music faces. Students learn how to create an effective musical narrative for a film scene, using appropriate techniques to create an intended effect.

Offbeat - Exploring Reggae and Syncopation
This unit begins by exploring the origins of
Reggae music.
The unit uses two Reggae songs as case studies to explore the musical
features of the genre: “Yellow Bird”: a
Caribbean song, and “Three Little
Birds”.
West Side Story
Students will learn about the music and context of West Side Story, and study a number of songs in detail. They will use the rhythmic pattern of ‘America’ as the starting point for a chord-based composition.
Dance Music.
Students will explore the characteristic musical features of dance music from different times and places. They will understand the important connection between the steps, movement and formation of the dance and how these are inter-related within musical features such as time, metre, rhythms and chords in the music.
