8 | Cincinnati Reds | The return (and release) of Michael Mariot, Derek Law RA>P | “At some point in the next couple of days, I want to have him take me through the whole journey,” Bell said. 65 — The total number of players used by the Reds in 2023. That total was just one shy of the franchise record set a year ago, and one shy of the major-league lead (Angels). Oakland (62) was the only other team that used more than 60 players. The major-league record is 69, set by the Cubs in 2021. (Derek Law, pitching for Cincinnati against Atlanta on April 10, his final line: Zero innings, two runs charged, one pitch thrown. I think he may have been the first pitcher ever to finish his day with more runs than pitches. — Peter R. It’s a Strange But True box-score classic, all right. Derek Law arrives on the mound, inherits a Zombie Runner on second, dishes up a game-winning home run to Sean Murphy on the first pitch he flips up there and right you are, Peter. His line went like this: 2 runs, 1 pitch! So what’s so Strange But True about that? Here we go. How many pitchers in history — by which we obviously mean Zombie-Runner history (2020-23) — have ever had an outing like this one, featuring just one pitch but more runs than pitches? 10 | Colorado Rockies | Noah Davis hat knocked off (Charlie Brown), more trades, performance lab | Ben predicted the Rockies wouldn't make a trade; Many things about the Colorado Rockies go unnoticed by the general public because, well, they are bad at most things. 2023, however, brought with it a notable change in the way the organization operates that I think is worth remarking on: They traded with other teams significantly more than they have in a long long time. According to Sportrac's transaction tracker from the end of the 2022 regular season through the end of the 2023 regular season Bill Schmidt's Rockies made 15 trades. Compare that to Jeff Bridich's final 3+ years as GM (from the end of the 2017 regular season to the start of the 2021 regular season) where the Rockies made a total of 12 trades. Now, most of these deals were relatively minor (with the exception of the Nolan Jones trade) but getting even back of the rotation prospects like Mason Albright and Jake Madden for veterans on expiring contracts is simply something that the Rockies didn't do for years. Their reputation as extremely insular was earned but under Bill Schmidt it appears like it may be time to alter our expectations of them. If that turnaround in willingness to talk to other orgs doesn't fit the bill there's also the opening of their "performance lab". They have begun trying to catch up with the rest of the league in terms of analytics and development. In 2020 they had an R&D department of 1 employee which has risen to 11 (still second lowest in MLB) and have completed construction on the aforementioned "performance lab" that will open in January. There's still tons of work to be done but this year showed that under Bill Schmidt they actually finally realize this is a problem that needs to be solved. All told, 2023 was both the worst season in Rockies history record wise while also managing to be one of the most hopeful in atleast a half decade due to the above coinciding with a handful of good rookie seasons. There are still clearly times when ownership will stick it's head in and demand a stupid move be made **cough** Kris Bryant **Cough* but Bill Schmidt has shown that he is not Jeff Bridich. - Cory (PS: Meg asked on an episode a couple months ago whether any Rockie fans listened to the podcast and if they did whether it made them sad when y'all made remarks about how bad they were. I will say, the Rockies being the butt of most jokes on every baseball show I listen to does make me sad but that's not your fault it's the teams for having earned that derision.) | Matt, Cory Knowles | https://nypost.com/2023/04/17/rockies-pitcher-noah-davis-nearly-gets-head-taken-off-by-line-drive/ | https://twitter.com/PitchingNinja/status/1647701093726470144 | https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/transactions/colorado-rockies/trade/ | https://www.purplerow.com/2023/12/15/24002361/can-rockies-use-new-performance-lab-to-fully-embrace-the-biomechanics-age-research-development | https://www.mlb.com/news/rockies-open-performance-lab-at-scottsdale-training-center | |||||||||||||||||
11 | Detroit Tigers | Matt Manning broke the same foot twice on comebackers, Tyler Holton (led AL in RP IP) | I think one of the more underreported and under appreciated things about the Tigers Season was Tyler Holton. 12 | Houston Astros | Chas McCormick/Dusty Baker pudding saga | Amid frequent outcry and concerns about Dusty Baker's reluctance to consistently start Chas McCormick this past year, Chandler Rome wrote an article for the Athletic and detailed how a source from within the team claimed that Dusty privately had issues with McCormick's weight. Dusty then publicly responded to the allegations with an incredibly amusing defense centered around his frequent procurement of banana pudding for Chas: "As far as his weight is concerned, if I had something against him with his weight — and you can ask him — I wouldn't bring him banana pudding once a week. I stop by This Is It, I get him banana pudding... If I was concerned about a guy's weight, I would not bring a guy banana pudding." 17 | Milwaukee Brewers | Caleb Boushley's debut | the Caleb Boushley game comes to mind. Career minor leaguer from Wisconsin, grew up a Brewers fan, gets a call-up for the last series of the year to give regulars some rest during meaningless games. But, they leave him in for the 10th, where he gets a huge K to get out of a jam, then he gets the win in the bottom of the inning. Could very well end up being his only career MLB game. Much to Servais’ delight, Caballero didn’t back down from the veteran catcher, whose nickname is Machete. “Cabby is really savvy on how to use the clock,” Servais said. “He doesn’t like the pitcher out there holding the ball on him. He likes to slow it down. Per the rule, you’ve got to have your head up at eight seconds or earlier, but Cabby doesn’t usually lift his head up right away. He’ll be in the box, but his head is down until he gets to about 10 or nine on the clock, which is perfectly legal. It’s different. The Astros didn’t like it. Whatever. I love it.
