Today, we concluded our unit on bugs and insects, with a focus on bees. The students learned about the physical characteristics, types, and roles that bees serve in our community. We painted our own hives for the classroom , using bubble wrap. We even got to look at and touch a real beehive! We also experimented with pollination, using powdered sugar on our fingertips to “pollinate” flowers drawn on black paper.
Ask your children about the different types of bees, and what their roles are. go for a bug walk, taking note of all the insects you see in the world around you.

In honor of Earth Day, we began a unit on protecting our environment. We discussed the origins of Earth Day and ways that we can help make our earth a better, cleaner place to live. We discussed littering and went on a “litter walk,” talked about recycling and composting, and discussed protecting natural habitats, including forests and oceans. We used the book The Lorax to demonstrate the importance of caring for our environment. Each child then painted their own truffula tree forest and Lorax character.
Celebrate Earth Day this weekend by sharing with your child ways that your family helps the environment, including composting, recycling, planting trees, etc. Ask your child to explain to you the “unless” from The Lorax book we read in class and their role in being an activist for planet earth. Happy Earth Day!
