Cloud Environmental Sustainability (CES) is focused on reducing the environmental impact of running code, storing data, and using networks in the public cloud. CES is closely related to FinOps in that both focus on efficiency in the cloud. For FinOps, the focus of efficiency is on cloud value (as measured in cost effiency). For CES, the focus of efficiency is the environmental impact (as measured in physical results such as carbon emissions, water usage, mineral and metal depletion, etc).

Terminology is still evolving and you may see Cloud Environmental Sustainability also called GreenOps. Cloud Environmental Sustainability is classified as an intersecting capability with FinOps. We have published an overview of this intersection on the FinOps Foundation website: Intersection of Cloud FinOps & Sustainability. Most of the processes and mindset used for FinOps align with those for Cloud Environmental Sustainability. FinOps is a value play, not simply a cost play, for cloud operations. Likewise, organizations can endeavor to understand and optimize the balance between business value and environmental cost of their cloud operations. FinOps culture can be leveraged to enable cloud optimization on behalf of environmental sustainability.
