COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCE INSTRUCTIONAL TIME OPTIONS (Go to FIle --> Download to export file)
See
NYU OAPRA Credit Hour Guidance site for additional clarity. Also, NYU Steinhardt has created a great resource that takes you through the process of designing instructional activities: Instructional Time Playbook.
We are currently rolling out Phase 1: only courses that already meet NY State instructional time via meeting time listed in Albert will add templated language to their syllabi. All other cases will be addressed in later phases.
2
Learning Activity Supervision & Tracking Student Participation and Feedback: For all instructional time eligible learning activities, instructor of record should track student participation in the activities according to course expectations
3
Ongoing supervision of the activity can be conducted in several ways, appropriate to that activity, by the:
* Instructor of Record: Primary instructor assigned to the course in NYU SIS (Albert)
* NYU Support Staff/Administrator: Any member of the NYU community qualified to engage students in a learning experience (e.g., librarian, student affairs professional, career services professional, event host)
* Third Party: Non-NYU professional in a given domain/field qualified to assist students in a learning experience
* Automated System/Digital Record: System data capturing user behavior
4
5
Instructional time eligible learning activities: any activity that is required and supervised. These activities should allow for some ongoing dialogic exchange between instructional staff and students and should be integrated within course expectations in terms of participation/feedback and assessment/completion; for digital experiences, you can consider parallels with in person activities. These activities should be integrated into the course curriculum and aligned with learning outcomes.Examples of Learning Activities and what may qualify them as instructional time eligible Learning Activity CategoryEstimated minutes (total depends on the activity and its implementation, and is determined according to amount of time a student is expected to spend on the activity, including time spent interacting with instructor during the activity)

NY State requires 15 50-minute hours (15x50 = 750 minutes) of instructional activities per credit hour, comprised of lectures/seminars/labs etc. plus additional eligible learning activities as outlined in this table.
Modality
6
Synchronous meeting time indicated in Albert/SIS: includes regular meeting patterns for lab, lecture, recitations, seminar, tutorials, workshopLectures, seminars, recitations, labs, or other standard components logged in Albert/SIS (that which shows up in course search for students). These components allow for interaction between students and instructorsCourse meeting timeThese types of learning activities account for the bulk of minutes in these types of courses. For each credit hour, the instructional time required should be at or near 750 minutes (if below 750, additional activities as outlined in this document should be identified to fill out the remainder of minutes needed).

These instructional time minutes are what gets logged in Albert SIS (includes all components of the course, plus scheduled finals).
In person or Online
7
Synchronous or asynchronous non-standard component that involves faculty-student interaction indicated in Albert/SISIndependent study, internships, guided reading, or other similar components that require ongoing interaction, either synchronous or asynchronous, between instructors and students. This typically does not have a standard meeting pattern indicated in Albert/SIS.Course meeting timeSyllabus would estimate, for example, how much time is spent per week. Estimate according to NY State expectations.

Non-traditional courses may articulate unique means of meeting the credit hour requirements for the course relative to standard lecture courses, yet all work requirements in the course must be established and documented. The total required time and work in the course must match the total amount of time required for the course based on the credits granted.
In person or Online
8
Synchronous group discussion with instructional staff. Allows instructional staff to expand upon the lecture, answers questions, and also facilitates post-class Q&A and general student interaction. This could be a real time interaction between instructor and students, such as in person or via a direct messaging tool.Small group discussionUp to 2 hoursIn person or Online
9
Asynchronous group discussion with instructional staff. Allows instructional staff to expand upon the lecture, answers questions, and also facilitates post-class Q&A and general student interaction. This could be a delayed but sustained interaction between instructor and students, such as via a discussion tool. The discussion should be moderated with an instructor of record or instructional staff in real time.Small group discussionUp to 2 hoursOnline
10
Proctored assessment: quiz, exam, or skills demonstrationProctoring can be in person with instructional staff, or on screen via zoom.Monitored Assessment15 minutes to 2 hoursIn person or Online
11
Mandatory office hoursDesignated office hour(s) is/are required for each student.ConsultationsRoughly estimate 30 minutes for each required attendance - would include any pre- and post-exchange.In person or Online
12
NYU academic support office consultation (group or individual)Consultation or event attendance at the NYU Writing Center, University Learning Center, or another supervised exchange with an academic support office. Faculty member should verify attendance and integrate within the other course activities.ConsultationsEstimate 30 - 60 minutes per visit. In person or Online
13
NYU student experience office consultation (group or individual)Consultation or event attendance at NYU Wasserman, Office of Global Inclusion, or another supervised exchange with a student experience office. Faculty member should verify attendance and integrate within the other course activities.ConsultationsEstimate 30 - 60 minutes per visit. In person or Online
14
Moderated reading assignmentThis can take place synchronously or asynchronously where students go through interactions of reading and contributing to a faculty-moderated discussion around material. Could take place within a forum, group discussions, or other means.Asynchronous interaction with contentEstimate 2 hoursOnline
15
Study sessions or small group instruction by an instructor or instructional staff.Students are required to attend one or more of study sessions facilitatedfacilitted by instructor or instructional staff. Small group work where students meet in person, online, and/or in an asynchronous discussion areas to work on an iterative deliverable for a group project; for example, discussing and producing an outline of their final report. TA or instructor feedback is required and can be facilitated through use of Google docs or some platform.Small group discussionEstimate 30 - 60 minutes per visit. In person or Online
16
Co-created artifacts (papers, presentation, journal article, magazine, performance, art piece, experiment, etc.) with instructor contribution and feedback.Instructional staff and students iteratively create some deliverable that enhances the experiential learning Project-based activityEstimate 2+ hoursIn person or Online
17
Moderated annotations (analogue or digitally mediated)This can take place synchronously or asynchronously where students go through interations of annotating and engaging with instructor feedback.Asynchronous interaction with contentEstimate 2 hoursOnline
18
Moderated peer reviewThis can take place synchronously or asynchronously where students go through interactions of peer review and engaging with faculty input. Eg. include paper or computer code review, with input from instructional staff.Asynchronous interaction with contentEstimate 2 hoursOnline
19
Participating in an interactive tutorial, webinar, or other interactive computer-assisted instructionThese typically include asynchronous experiences where students have a deadline to complete and some synthesizing activity.Digital content/Open educational resourcesEstimate 1 - 2 hoursOnline
20
NYU instructional staff-created online modules/videos/simulations/labs with some interaction.NYU content that verifies completion (eg. Brightspace access log) and provides some interaction like a knowledge check or post-activity forum.Digital content/Open educational resourcesEstimate 1 - 2 hoursOnline
21
Other asynchronous learning activity where students interact with instructional time around some content. Allows for estimation of time spent and instructor feedback required. This can leverage open educational resources or some other content, and instructional staff would create before/during/after interactions with student and content. Consider how one would show a portion of a film in class, but have a pre-discussion, have students take targeted notes while watching, and then follow up with some instructor-mediated activity that relates to course expectations.Digital content/Open educational resourcesEstimate 1 - 2 hoursOnline
22
NYU Libraries instructional content and/or programmingNYU Libraries content or programming. Verify completion and provide some interaction like a knowledge check or post-activity forum. See https://library.nyu.edu/about/events/Direct instructionEstimate 1 - 2 hoursOnline
23
Field trip, tour, meeting, or other hands on experience facilitated by an instructional expert (instructor of record, TA, docent, or someone with comparable content expertise) and allowing for some interaction. This could be a traditional real-time type of experience at the square, at one of our global sites, or elsewhere. It could also be recorded lecture by the instructor of record that requires ongoing interaction on the part of the student. An example is a guided audio tour, with real-time prompts that students complete, and some summative interaction facilitated by an instructor of record or TA.Experiential eventEstimate 2+ hoursIn person or Online
24
Scaffolded attendance at Scholarly/Discipline-specific talks related to learning outcomes of the course. This could be a traditional real-time type of experience at the square, at one of our global sites, or elsewhere. It could also be recorded lecture by the instructor of record that requires ongoing interaction on the part of the student. See https://as.nyu.edu/events/events-calendar.html#page=0&span=all and your discipline's talks.Experiential eventEstimate 1 - 2 hoursIn person or Online
25
Performance event facilitated by an instructional expert, allowing for some interaction before and after the event (instructor of record, TA, docent, or someone with comparable content expertise). This could be a post-performance Q&A facilitated by the instructor or TA.Experiential eventEstimate 2+ hoursIn person or Online
