Any additional thoughts?

I really don't see the problem. We're not children anymore, sex is classified as both gender and sexual intercourse, and that's something both genders have to grasp.

This is coming from someone living in what's rated the most equal place on earth.

Nah, man. I think changing it was a fine choice for the sensibilities thing, and just to make the gem a bit more professional. For me, not changing it wouldn't have been the end of the world, but since changing it is an insignificant amount of work and it maybe helps some people out, it's cool.

Grow the hell up, everybody. We aren't coding in the dorm basement anymore, we're grownups with careers hoping to be taken seriously in the world. Naming a gem something immaturely provocative makes me assume you won't take me seriously as a woman and makes me not take you seriously as a developer making something useful or interesting.
19
11/17/2014 12:21:39Maleindifferent0
I understand why you chose the name because it is an accurate one (the gem performed name sexing) and I feel bad that this whole shit-storm had happened over a name that had the word 'sex' in it. It's a good gem and personally I don't think the original name or the new name was a big deal. kudos on taking the high road but at the same time I would be careful not to let people bully you in to changing your code or what not simply because it upsets them (especially when those complaining have little if any real programming involvement or knowledge). If that were an acceptable tactic I would have every perl program removed off the web.

Here's a way simpler and extremely more effective way of handling gender programmatically: don't relate it to names. There are girls named Charlie and guys named Kelly.

Is it really so damn hard to use gender-neutral language in applications and ask for the genders of users when necessary?

I thought it was a clever name (albeit inaccurate—names are gendered, not sexed). The insanity/inanity in the GH thread made me very sad, and I wonder whether you felt railroaded at all by it, being put in a position of having to choose a side (which largely seem to comprise whackos, some reasonable/charitable folks on either "side" notwithstanding).

There are countries where women can't walk outside unless they are covered from head to toe and here we are, changing a cleverly named program because someone has nothing better to do than find things to get offended by.

Also she has no good intentions, reposting comments behind people's back. Just a whiny fuck.

Agree entirely with your logic. Don't think the name is offensive, but as a straight, white man it doesn't really matter what I think. If the name was making people we want in the community uncomfortable, the name should change. People are important. Project names... Not so much.

I don't see how the name "SexMachine" could be construed as being sexist toward any gender or other, to be honest.

Having said that, my initial reaction to hearing it for the first time would likely be of bemusement, finding it perhaps more "teenage humor" than anything else.

Should it be changed? Probably a good idea. Is there a need for it to be changed because "SexMachine" would be so ghastly? Not in my opinion.

Changing a hilarious and fitting name to something uncatchy and just plain because someone got upset about a word that is used to describe a healthy and normal act in life?

I'm really confused on why you would do this, as there was literally nothing wrong with the initial name, as I'm pretty certain GenderDetector won't get a good laugh out of a bunch of coders when compared to SexMachine.

Please remind yourself that simple and fun humor is what makes this area of technology fun and hilarious, yet easily understandable and witty.

Thanks for reading,
Jill

I think the debate has sparked more offense, harassment and abuse than the actual name. The song isn't offense, why should the reference be?

But on another note, I think your blog post about your reasoning was great and levelheaded: http://findingscience.com/ruby/2014/11/17/why-im-renaming-a-gem.html

Even if I don't fully agree with the decision to rename it.

"0 means you don't care"? I'd prefer to vote -5, meaning I strongly feel that the name should not have been changed. The old name was funny and light-hearted, the new one is boring and generic. Please don't give in to this Tumblr epidemic of "social justice warriors".

Also, I'm afraid you're going to get abuse on this form since it's been posted on 4chan and the like.

I hate everything about this, another lazy internet feminist group bullying someone over the way they're expressing themselves. Even though there are actual gender issues that they should be working to resolve they prefer to just sit down and type on their keyboard all day, all the while proclaiming that they're a part of the feminist movement, despite not getting anything that _actually matters_ done (although I guess some would argue that a small piece of code that determines sex based on a name affects us all, I find that scenario unlikely).

You'd swear the war on gender inequality was just a war on expression at this point, but luckily there are actual real feminists still out there (that don't waste their time policing the internet) who help to show that gender inequality is more than someone being "potentially offensive".

This is the part where I'd tell you to stick up for yourself and keep the original name, but the way this war on expression is going you'll probably be the next unlucky sob to get tweeted by a popular feminist and then you'd have the whole army on you. It's up to you.

Please don't mistake feminism for puritanism. The feminist movement does good, while puritans are only here to shame sexuality. Both call themselves feminists, which means you need to do some sorting/sifting through the imposture. Please, please don't believe that this renaming helped social progress rather than held it back.
80
11/17/2014 13:46:53Maleindifferent1Since you're determining gender (identity) rather than sex (genetics), the new name is more technically correct.

You shouldn't have changed the name. You capitulated to a specific brand of feminism that most other feminists detest. Some reading:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feminist_sex_wars

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sex-positive_feminism

Regarding your reasoning for the rename:

"If enough people from that group claim that some words that I chose make it harder for them, who am I to question their feelings."

You are not responsible for anyone else's emotions. Lastly, to get to the ideal world where woman can make jokes about sex same as men can, women would need to start making those jokes, and would need to fight slut shaming whenever possible, not restrict the freedom of expression of men. That only breeds resentment, and further reinforces the (false) image that women are delicate little flowers that one must walk on eggshells around. I believe women to be better than that. Do you?
