When I first heard the name of the gem SexMachine I felt
On a scale of 0 to 5, how strongly do you feel that the name should have been changed.
|Any additional thoughts?|
|11/17/2014 11:45:31||Male||indifferent||0||>caving to special snowflakes|
>thinking that people with even the remotest interest in programming would give a flying shit about petty drivel like this
You are the cancer killing sanity.
|11/17/2014 11:48:31||Male||uncomfortable||3||Thanks for accepting the new name, and more importantly taking the time to consider how other people felt about it.|

|11/17/2014 11:50:44||Male||indifferent||0||Frankly, I think this was the wrong move.|
I really don't see the problem. We're not children anymore, sex is classified as both gender and sexual intercourse, and that's something both genders have to grasp.
This is coming from someone living in what's rated the most equal place on earth.
indifferent, equal parts mildly amused and mildly distasteful
Nah, man. I think changing it was a fine choice for the sensibilities thing, and just to make the gem a bit more professional. For me, not changing it wouldn't have been the end of the world, but since changing it is an insignificant amount of work and it maybe helps some people out, it's cool.
|11/17/2014 12:08:10||Male||indifferent||1||Really though, it was a bad name for what it does.|
|11/17/2014 12:13:09||Male||indifferent||5||Thanks for the support of the name change. It seems like a lot of hassle for a semantic change, but it'll make a dent in the long run, particularly for the ruby community.|
|11/17/2014 12:15:44||Squirrel||Horny||0||How did you like the kool-aid?|
Grow the hell up, everybody. We aren't coding in the dorm basement anymore, we're grownups with careers hoping to be taken seriously in the world. Naming a gem something immaturely provocative makes me assume you won't take me seriously as a woman and makes me not take you seriously as a developer making something useful or interesting.
I understand why you chose the name because it is an accurate one (the gem performed name sexing) and I feel bad that this whole shit-storm had happened over a name that had the word 'sex' in it. It's a good gem and personally I don't think the original name or the new name was a big deal. kudos on taking the high road but at the same time I would be careful not to let people bully you in to changing your code or what not simply because it upsets them (especially when those complaining have little if any real programming involvement or knowledge). If that were an acceptable tactic I would have every perl program removed off the web.
Here's a way simpler and extremely more effective way of handling gender programmatically: don't relate it to names. There are girls named Charlie and guys named Kelly.
Is it really so damn hard to use gender-neutral language in applications and ask for the genders of users when necessary?
|11/17/2014 12:36:50||Male||indifferent||5||i agree with your decision here and applaud you for being so open-minded and empathetic to what i saw as a very reasonable request.|
uncomfortable, unhappy and shocked
|4||I love the Ruby community and the people here. I want to do what I can to make this community welcome to everyone. It's my hope that others in the community feel the same way! <3|
I thought it was a clever name (albeit inaccurate—names are gendered, not sexed). The insanity/inanity in the GH thread made me very sad, and I wonder whether you felt railroaded at all by it, being put in a position of having to choose a side (which largely seem to comprise whackos, some reasonable/charitable folks on either "side" notwithstanding).
|11/17/2014 12:41:27||Male||indifferent||0||While I understand your reasoning, you just gave fuel to horrible people who are already given a lot. Not cool.|
There are countries where women can't walk outside unless they are covered from head to toe and here we are, changing a cleverly named program because someone has nothing better to do than find things to get offended by.
Also she has no good intentions, reposting comments behind people's back. Just a whiny fuck.
I thought you were going to get shit for the name
Agree entirely with your logic. Don't think the name is offensive, but as a straight, white man it doesn't really matter what I think. If the name was making people we want in the community uncomfortable, the name should change. People are important. Project names... Not so much.
All of science and technology took yet another babystep backwards today because politically-motivated people were able to sway yet another person to change a long-standing and otherwise useful project they never had any desire to utilize themselves either way to begin with.
|11/17/2014 12:44:51||Female||happy||0||I want the old name back|
I can't believe you were swayed by radical feminists. You should stand up for what you believe in. You stood up for it in an earlier issue on GitHub but now your will is swaying. I think you should undo it.
|11/17/2014 12:45:06||Male||indifferent||0||Ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous.|
|11/17/2014 12:50:19||Female||uncomfortable||0||No idea why you gave in to this shitty fake feminist whining.|
I don't see how the name "SexMachine" could be construed as being sexist toward any gender or other, to be honest.
Having said that, my initial reaction to hearing it for the first time would likely be of bemusement, finding it perhaps more "teenage humor" than anything else.
Should it be changed? Probably a good idea. Is there a need for it to be changed because "SexMachine" would be so ghastly? Not in my opinion.
|11/17/2014 13:04:12||Male||happy||0||It's always a sad day when a good person gives into the unreasonable demands of Internet "feminists" who have nothing better to do but pretend that they are horribly offended by nothing.|
|11/17/2014 13:04:21||Male||happy||3||I can see both sides. I would rather see you listen to those that are offended and make a decision based on that conversation.|
|11/17/2014 13:10:12||Male||happy||0||Don't bow down to SJWs.|
indifferent, uncomfortable, slightly humored
|0||Its your gem, you do whatever the fuck you want with it.|
Don't let some thin skinned person get all upset and demand that you change it so that they can sleep at night.
Changing a hilarious and fitting name to something uncatchy and just plain because someone got upset about a word that is used to describe a healthy and normal act in life?
I'm really confused on why you would do this, as there was literally nothing wrong with the initial name, as I'm pretty certain GenderDetector won't get a good laugh out of a bunch of coders when compared to SexMachine.
Please remind yourself that simple and fun humor is what makes this area of technology fun and hilarious, yet easily understandable and witty.
Thanks for reading,
|11/17/2014 13:12:53||Female||indifferent||0||Who cares, dont change your ways for a few whiny SJWtards, they thrive through influence and control.|
SexMachine was genderless anyway.
I think the debate has sparked more offense, harassment and abuse than the actual name. The song isn't offense, why should the reference be?
But on another note, I think your blog post about your reasoning was great and levelheaded: http://findingscience.com/ruby/2014/11/17/why-im-renaming-a-gem.html
Even if I don't fully agree with the decision to rename it.
|11/17/2014 13:15:40||Male||indifferent||0||Ruby is for hipsters so I don't care.|
|11/17/2014 13:17:39||Female||indifferent, happy||0||You are an idiot|
|11/17/2014 13:18:00||Male||indifferent||0||The only people that wanted the name change are the people who don't care about the project.|
|indifferent||0||The name change is stupid.|
indifferent, happy, it was amusing, lighthearted and fun
"0 means you don't care"? I'd prefer to vote -5, meaning I strongly feel that the name should not have been changed. The old name was funny and light-hearted, the new one is boring and generic. Please don't give in to this Tumblr epidemic of "social justice warriors".
Also, I'm afraid you're going to get abuse on this form since it's been posted on 4chan and the like.
|11/17/2014 13:29:26||Male||happy||0||What exactly makes it worse for a woman than for a men? I don't get it.|
|11/17/2014 13:29:46||Female||indifferent||0||What a waste of time.|
indifferent, after I learned it's purpose I thought it was pretty smart.
I hate everything about this, another lazy internet feminist group bullying someone over the way they're expressing themselves. Even though there are actual gender issues that they should be working to resolve they prefer to just sit down and type on their keyboard all day, all the while proclaiming that they're a part of the feminist movement, despite not getting anything that _actually matters_ done (although I guess some would argue that a small piece of code that determines sex based on a name affects us all, I find that scenario unlikely).
You'd swear the war on gender inequality was just a war on expression at this point, but luckily there are actual real feminists still out there (that don't waste their time policing the internet) who help to show that gender inequality is more than someone being "potentially offensive".
This is the part where I'd tell you to stick up for yourself and keep the original name, but the way this war on expression is going you'll probably be the next unlucky sob to get tweeted by a popular feminist and then you'd have the whole army on you. It's up to you.
|11/17/2014 13:31:15||Female||indifferent||0||It's just a name.|
|11/17/2014 13:33:47||Male||indifferent||0||Waste of time.|
indifferent, happy, funny
|11/17/2014 13:41:59||Male||indifferent, happy||0|
Please don't mistake feminism for puritanism. The feminist movement does good, while puritans are only here to shame sexuality. Both call themselves feminists, which means you need to do some sorting/sifting through the imposture. Please, please don't believe that this renaming helped social progress rather than held it back.
|11/17/2014 13:46:53||Male||indifferent||1||Since you're determining gender (identity) rather than sex (genetics), the new name is more technically correct.|
Although I don't really care, the website 4chan (known for being misogynistic assholes) is prompting users to vote on this poll and skew the results. I can guarantee you that the results will be inaccurate due to this.
|11/17/2014 13:49:15||Female||indifferent||0||You're pathetic.|
|11/17/2014 13:50:33||Female||indifferent||0||If you seriously believe that women are affected by things like this then you really are sexist..|

You shouldn't have changed the name. You capitulated to a specific brand of feminism that most other feminists detest. Some reading:
Regarding your reasoning for the rename:
"If enough people from that group claim that some words that I chose make it harder for them, who am I to question their feelings."
You are not responsible for anyone else's emotions. Lastly, to get to the ideal world where woman can make jokes about sex same as men can, women would need to start making those jokes, and would need to fight slut shaming whenever possible, not restrict the freedom of expression of men. That only breeds resentment, and further reinforces the (false) image that women are delicate little flowers that one must walk on eggshells around. I believe women to be better than that. Do you?
|11/17/2014 13:57:52||Female||indifferent, happy||0||Silly to make the change|
|11/17/2014 13:58:03||Male||indifferent, happy||1||literary the stupidest thing I've ever seen.|
|11/17/2014 13:58:22||Male||happy||0||I feel uncomfortable with the thought that the world is changing into a place where everything has to be 100% safe just because someone somewhere sometime might feel a little offended.|
|11/17/2014 13:59:41||Male||indifferent||0||you gave in to bullies|
now they will go and bully other projects
hope you're happy with yourself
|11/17/2014 14:00:45||Male||indifferent||0||This is the dumbest shit, hurr durr Im offended #triggerwarning|
|11/17/2014 14:02:57||Male||indifferent||0||This is just giving in to bullying|
Change the name back. I'm a woman in tech and this name change is just stupid; if someone gets scared off from technology because of a funny name for a piece of code then they were better off in the humanities anyway.
|11/17/2014 14:05:48||Male||indifferent||0||just tell them fuck off and keep the name|
