Dr Challoner’s was pleased to welcome Ato
Belayneh Sheway from Ethiopia to the school. Belayneh works in Gondar,
for Link Ethiopia, coordinating all the activities of Link Ethiopia in
the country. He was visiting the school to accept a cheque in assembly
for £1661.70. This money was raised last summer term by a charity
non-uniform day, a staff vs student’s tug-of-war and by several Year 8
classes undertaking small money raising projects.

Belayneh told the Junior School assembly how the money would be spent in
our linked school, Fasiledes General Secondary School. They currently
have no IT facilities for pupils to use so the money will pay for 20-25
new computers to start the school’s first IT classroom. Link Ethiopia
hopes to recruit some volunteers to spend a few months in Ethiopia,
teaching IT skills.

Belayneh was accompanied on this visit by Binian, an 11 year old student
from Kebel 16 Elementary School, also in Gondar. Binian won a
competition organised by Link Ethiopia in conjunction with ‘Wash and Go’
to design a football strip. The main focus of their trip was to visit
the winners of the British competition and exchange the kits. Both
Belayneh and Binian took the opportunity to visit some lessons and
enjoyed their tour of the school. For further information on the work of
Link Ethiopia please visit www.linkethiopia.org
