These workers deserve a fair wage!
5
David KociembaAAUP
Any year without a cost-of-living increase is effectively a pay cut. Graduate students deserve a living wage, every year, not just when it's convenient. Graduate student working conditions are not only student learning conditions, but a core investment in the future of the profession and the industry that depends on them.

As a proud graduate of UCSC, I care about the quality of education and quality of life for all its workers. California needs to invest in and support graduate student employees.
7
Mariah QuinnAAUP
As a former grad student who has student debt and will for at least another decade because of an insufficient living allowance in an expensive city (DC), I keenly understand your struggle. UC can use its billions in endowment for the right things -- students, teaching, and learning. Solidarity.

Solidarity forever! I was a graduate student at UCSC (PhD, 2017) and the lack of proper pay for graduate student duties was a significant strain on my mental and physical health, as well as my ability to contribute to my field and prepare for the next step in my academic trajectory. I often had 2 or 3 jobs on top of my TAship in order to pay the rent. One of those jobs was at a dive bar, which was rather unsafe and also was a considerable drag on my energy to do my academic work. I often worked with students (as colleagues, and also my undergrad students) who were homeless due to the astronomical cost of living in Santa Cruz. Everyone should be able to pay for housing where they live, and the UC has a responsibility to pay grads enough to live near their campus. PAY THEM! #cola4all

The UC system cannot exist without the hard work and labor of students, staff, researchers and others. Their demands are not just reasonable but just/fair and in order for the UC system to function and excel in an equitable and inclusive manner, it needs to genuinely listen to and engage with the individuals raising the just demands.
