Was really impressed with my first time at this convention. The staff was very helpful and friendly. We were originally next to a handmade soap dealer, and strong scents trigger migraines for me, so I asked the dealer's room coordinator if anything could be done. She (nicely) asked the soap vendor on our behalf if they would move and they did. Everyone was very accommodating. Security and volunteers checked on us regularly. We always had a crowd around our booth and attendees were generally friendly and engaging.

Thumbs up to the person doing the floor layout. We had lots of traffic to and from the dealers room that gave us plenty of people to swing by repeatedly and make purchases if they missed us the first time.
Well done.

Still not a big fan of how this show is run, but it's great when you're settled and selling. Was miffed at and not impressed with AA staff not communicating well with the rest of A-kon staff both on and off site. No one, including ANY staff, AA, security, or otherwise, knew we would be open Thursday evening to attendees until they were coming in the doors. And after close Thursday, no staff could confidently tell us when we'd be open to the public on Friday. AA emails before the con said 9am. The printed con schedule said 10am. Literally no one on any staff team knew. It was extremely frustrating. In the end, someone decided we were to open at 9am Friday, but it ended up being more like 9:30am. Then Saturday they changed it to 10am officially.

The AA volunteers coming around to check that artists had water and were covered for breaks were nice, but upper management hasn't really improved in organization or mannerisms in all the years I've done A-kon. It's really disappointing how obvious it is that no one on A-kon staff actually bothers to talk to each other and coordinate.

That said, I'm glad they finally moved all the guest tables to the back of the room because 90% of them are ALWAYS empty for the duration of the show and were a horrible sore sight at the AA entrance. I don't know why A-kon bothers to give guests tables if they're never going to be used. I felt really bad for the actual artists with tables in the same island as no-show guests since, as always, empty tables repel attendees like nothing else.

I was at the back of the alley, so I thought business was going to be poor, but it was actually my best con yet. Although not a lot of people walked by, a higher rate than usual bought, probably because once they're in the back of the alley they're actually here to buy things, not just browse like in the front or head straight to the dealer's room like in the middle. I'm not 100% sure though.

I like A-kon a lot, despite the staff. Staff is kind of abrasive and needs more people to organize. Actual volunteer amount was fine, volunteers at Akon are always nice, but there's basically one person running the AA and she needs a second in command.

As per usual, Akon had a ton of empty tables reserved for their special guests, or whatever they're called, that the guests never used, which is really annoying. Over all, tho, it's a solid con if you don't mind being in Dallas.

I had attended APE in the past as an attendee, not as a seller. This was my first year showing. APE was relocated in 2015 from San Francisco to San Jose and under new management. This was most definitely a hiccup year and their website reflects that they are restructuring the con to be bigger and better and more focused, it will just take a little time. If you're a newbie like me and didn't expect to make any money, it was a great learning experience and as a bay area resident it is worth it to me to keep going and growing my presence. However, if you're a seasoned pro this would have been an incredibly disappointing experience.
The initial information was misleading and signage outside the show was terrible. The website said we would be in the San Jose Convention Center and instead we were in a giant metal(though well ventilated) tent about a block away. On the first day there were a couple of kind artists that were helping directing people to the right location(they were sellers, not APE volunteers). The second day there were directional street signs. The internal staff was helpful. The space was easy to navigate.
Despite all the draw backs I think this will be a con worth looking into in the next couple of years as they encourage creative booth design and participation, 2015 was not a shinning example of that.

I split this table with a friend although one person buys the full table under their name for 225$. She made over 1200$ (3D artist 95% fan art). This was a really great show for it's 1st year. They might have broken 10k attendees. It didn't feel like it but it was close. Considering that our full table made close to 2300$ in sales. Our other friend who sells 100% original plush and jewelry at a full table said she broke 2,000$ in sales. Although I checked I'd recommend this show to local artists I'd say outside artists who have a clear vision, a lot of stock, or maybe know someone here to cut travel costs; etc could do well enough here too.

This convention works well if you manage your costs well. There are several reasonably priced hotels within 10-15 min drive of the convention center and parking costs are very reasonable. Excellent food options. The alley itself suffers the problem of being in a poor ratio of attendee to vendor. Past 2 years has shown an increase in tables but not in response to an increase in demand by the attendees. The result is stagnant revenue numbers for some and decreases for others, which is why managing expenses, like hotel costs is key. Not a recommended for those who fly long distance (unless your airfaire is very inexpensive)

I've been attending AZ locally for five years now.

IN those five years, I averaged only 300$ in sales and then until last year made a leap of about 200% thanks to the influx of attendees because of the guests, but still was alot lower than expected sales for the size of convention.

Additionally, the fact that their alley is a bit too big as well as vendors makes it difficult for the money to get around to every one, as well as lack of buyer interest in specific types of items.

Unless you are a print artist (or plush artist), you will find many of the attendees lack an appreciation or respect for your items prices and the minute you tell them they are turned away from your items (i sell jewelry predominantly and my price range is 5-15$ at most for my jewelry). I've also sold in the Dealers hall before with friends and while sales are better there, they don't do too much more.

It is a difficult alley to work with and for the size and money they expect, there just is not enough profit and the alley coordinators consistently over look things such as their lack of layouts, and good time slots for promotion in this alley. Additional complaints can be said about the long hours of the alley as well as lack of resources like food near by for convenience for those who are working the weekend alone but what can you do about that i suppose.

For the area there are many many better smaller cons that are more affordable to attend and where people will appreciate the work better and you come out with more money. AZ keeps trying to be Otakon and raises their prices drastically every year and continues to not provide things like even ONE badge which is rediculous considering that they don't bring in the kind of revenue that Otakon does or attendee numbers so it is very frustrating to have seen our tables go from 40$ up to 110 with no badge included and then to fight to break above 500$ across the entire weekend is very frustration for a professional artist like myself since i travel to 10+ of the biggest cons on the east coast and AZ consistently has always had very poor sales where as i can easilly bring in several k's at others of smaller and larger sizes.

On site organization was much better than last year, they seemed to really value their artists. There was an odd vibe among the attendees this year and they seemed to be more reluctant to buy, also many spent all their money in the dealers room before getting to AA.

Animazement staff were the most helpful and catering staff I have ever seen at a convention. It was very welcoming for my first time there. Walked me to my table, helped me carry things, etc. It is a huge alley so there is a lot of competition and business seems to waver during the dealer's room hours, but I still did very well despite all of this. Great crowd.

This was unfortunately the worst organized show I have attended.

The AA map was not even posted until after the convention started. Additionally, artists were not contacted about set up times, entrances, or any other con info until 2am the day before the show, even though payment for booths was taken 7 months prior. Emails to the AA head were never returned. Set up was only 1 hour before the AA opened. Overall a very poorly run convention.

My feelings on Anime Banzai are mixed. Attendance was decent this year, as were sales, but staff organization left a lot to be desired. The registration process was a mess (with a system not built to handle the influx of interested artists) and staff was nearly impossible to reach before the convention. The waiting time on responses could span weeks or months, and getting straight answers to simple questions was like pulling teeth. (Table locations weren't even posted until the night before the convention.) On the flip side, staff were very helpful and friendly during the convention itself. Given this information and the fact that Anime Banzai is a relatively small convention (as compared to other local cons like Salt Lake Comic Con/FanX and FantasyCon), I am unsure if I would recommend selling there.

ABC (Anime Blues Con) is a small, mostly volunteer-run organization, so a lot of the responses were bad- wrong email addresses were given out when the booth registration went live, I was left off the email list for getting table and parking information, etc. However, this year has been extremely worse- the guy doing it last year has apparently stepped down, and even though they advertise AA will be a part of the con, they have not sent out information about booths, neither for new sellers nor resigning contracts. This is extremely problematic, as the con is one month away. In summary, it's a small con, and unless someone is extremely local to the Midsouth-Memphis area, I would not hassle with them.

One key thing to note for AB 2015 is the significant increase in revenues for the majority of the Artist Alley due to a unique combination of factors. Lack of interest in the dealers room, any money given to kids for Easter, and good weather may have all played a significant role in the larger-than-expected bump in sales. While AB typically yields good revenues, it would be unwise to expect 2016 to have a similar jump in revenue. Overall, a solid, well-run show with revenues comparable to its size. Also, artists may wish to consider staying just outside Boston and commuting/carpooling in order to save significantly on hotel costs.

This show advertised that it would have a higher attendee count than it did, which made the price of the table feel unfair. Sales and traffic in the artist alley were slow. The artist alley staff gave us snacks and drinks, which were very appreciated. However, they did not have organized, marked registration lines and open/closing times were inaccurate. The doors were not managed the first 2 days of the con. Thankfully, AA staff was not strict at all. I did not hear of any problems between artists and staff. They were accommodating and kind.

A lot of artists said they didn't break even from the show and a lot complained about locations. But Honestly, Anime California was the one Con where I ended up meeting some artists that were extremely rude. Even some friends who were only attendees said that a lot of the artists were very off-putting. I GUESS THAT'S MY COMPLAINT ABOUT THE CON? Unfortunately it has nothing to do with the con itself :X

There was a debacle in the beginning where they had oversold some tables so table assignments were VERY last minute. Luckily mine were okay but it was a little stressful. Staff came around and gave out KIND bars, chips, fruit, coke, and water. They were all very nice and they were very receptive to Artists concerns and critiques as well. They're a newish con so I'm definitely going to give it a try. I don't think it's worth it to travel, but it was definitely worth it to go!

I've always done well at ACen. They typically put their AA inbetween the registration area and the dealer's area, so there's a lot of traffic that goes through and buys who might otherwise have passed up the Artist Alley.

ACEN was really hit or miss this year from what I heard, I personally didn't do great, I could probably do better if I went back and got a whole table, but I also don't like Chicago so I probably won't go this year.

I was very happy to have this as my first convention, it was close to where I live, there were many artists there to learn from. I had a great time and managed to make a profit my first go! Mostly super happy with the way the convention was run but I wish AA close times were more stable, they kept changing it on us or announcing it last minute at the con arbitrarily.

I was going to attend if they were running it this year but that's not the case! Next time they run the con I'll try to return!
