JJArabic - Arabic Study Abroad Course (NM-NH)This course has students at the Novice Mid-High level develop a website for a study abroad course in Jordan, learning about the country, culture and how to interact while abroad. It is a complete curriculum for a 13-week college semester with 4 class meetings per week, but it also features suggested material to increase the length of any unit. The majority of the input materials are authentic texts, though there are also materials provided for cultural enrichment in English or subtitled, and some constructed texts. This course is independent of any textbook, but assumes Novice Mid level of Levantine Arabic. Please attribute the materials to Alexander Magidow, Associate Professor, University of Rhode Island if you do use them.https://lor.instructure.com/resources/04f509c8c892441d8bcab233d8ea6c8e?sharedAlexander MagidowUniversity of Rhode IslandNoauthentic, Shamy, travel, transportation, dialects, geography, weather, shoppingFirst draft (taught once)

JJArabic - Culture of the Arab World (URI Course)This is a semester-long course on Arabic culture at the undergraduate level, designed around a wide variety of resources, from readings to music videos to websites. The course is designed to have 2 lecture days, and either a third in-class or asynchronous time spent watching movies, for a total of 4 credit hours of work. The course has an introductory component, but the core of the course is intended to reflect the process of growing up in Arabic culture, starting with birth, then childhood, and finally young adulthood. The course takes a "mosaic" approach, assembling a larger picture from many small snapshots. When possible, we try to privilege voices that would consider themselves part of Arab culture rather than outside commentators. Our overarching goal was to make the course a humanizing experience, while introducing students to make cultural touchstones, issues, and ways of thinking about culture. The course is like any a constant work in progress, and we understand that any culture course will necessarily have components that may be found controversial. الكمال لله. This course was designed and developed by Drs. Alexander Magidow and Eric Young at the University of Rhode Island.
