The MA in Management in the Creative and Cultural Industries in York’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities, offers a broad base of cross-sector knowledge and professional skills for working in any creative industries sector, including digitial and interactive media, fashion, festivals, film, museums, music, theatre, television, and the visual arts. Core modules are delivered from within the School of Arts and Creative Technologies and the School for Business and Society; they are industry-focused and develop leadership, management and marketing skills for working across the sector, together with the technical, business, financial, legal and regulatory knowledge underpinning creative businesses. Optional modules may be drawn from the School of Arts and Creative Technologies, allowing you to tailor learning to suit your interests and professional needs. The taught programme includes a collaborative industry project, a module designed to respond to the business needs of an external industry partner in the creative and cultural sectors. Examples of projects might include designing and delivering a public event, marketing a performance or event, advising businesses on expansion strategies to enter a new market, and producing a management plan to deliver business strategies. The programme also affords students the opportunity to specialise in a sector and disciplinary area of their own choosing by undertaking and researching in-depth an innovative business, creative or academic project, delivered as a final individual project. Delivering cross-faculty teaching from two of the University of York's internationally-recognised Schools, learning on this programme takes place in an exciting, multi-disciplinary context. Teaching approaches embed practice-based activities and problem-based learning to develop work-based expertise and hone critical thinking skills. This innovative programme focuses on developing professional capabilities and equipping you to take the next step in your career in the creative and cultural industries. It is aimed at both recent arts or social science graduates and those already working in creative and cultural organisations and would suit both creatives planning a career move into a business environment, and those from a business background looking to move into creative and cultural organisations. Our courses are taught by research-active, award-winning, creative professionals across performance arts, music, sound, creative writing, curatorship, immersive and interactive media; what you learn at York stems directly from current research and practice.

The MA programme is designed to prepare students for management careers in the creative and cultural industries, for example in film, television, music, theatre, immersive media, museums and galleries. The broad disciplinary and sector platform means that students can acquire core business skills, such as marketing, project management, finance and law, relevant for working in a wide range of creative or cultural businesses or voluntary organisations. Applied and theoretical modules allow scope to specialise, both in terms of disciplinary area and specific creative or business skills, for example, for students interested in a career in media management, marketing in the theatre industry, fundraising for museums and art galleries, or education and outreach in the music sector. The programme provides sufficient breadth to allow progression to a range of creative and cultural businesses, organisations and agencies. The taught programme culminates in an applied collaborative project designing and delivering a public event or performance and the opportunity to specialise in a sector and disciplinary area by undertaking an innovative business, creative or academic project.
